Nagano Travel Guide
A travel guide for visiting Nagano Japan. Highlights include: Getting to Nagano from Tokyo, Nagano Station, Zenkoji Temple, Cherry Blossoms, and the Snow Monkey Park. Nagano, now connected by a new Shinkansen line, is only a 90 minute trip from Tokyo Station. Although most people only know of Nagano as a former home to the winter Olympics, it is a great day trip from Tokyo, or over-night stay to visit the Nagano Snow Monkey Park.
While you are in Nagano, make sure to their some of their food specialties: Soba Noodles, Apples, and Miso Ice Cream. The third floor of JR Nagano Station has a great selection of local eateries.

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park | YUDANAKA - NAGANO - JAPAN
When we went we had a rainy day with not a lot of the more photogenic snow present which was a bit of a shame... BUT there were a TON of monkeys of all ages in all directions, and they seemed to be just as happy to take in a sweet onsen bath on a rainy day as much as a snowy one.
I was particularly surprised at how close you get to them, I guess I had an impression we would be a distance away from the action, but you are in the thick of it, any closer and you would be in the pool with them. In fact the monkeys move around all the walking areas freely, up and down the handrails, around your legs, up the paths... It doesn't get much more interactive than that.
GETTING THERE:
This is the easiest way we discovered to reach the park.
FROM NAGANO
Take the NAGADEN TRAIN express to YUDANAKA STATION - About 45min and around 1,,200¥ one way adult fare.
Then, take one of the LOCAL BUSES to SHIGA KOGEN that leaves from the train station itself 2x per hour. The staff at the station are very familiar with the Snow Monkey park and can help you get the correct bus. The stop you need to get off at is called SNOW MONKEY PARK... Pretty idiot proof haha.
Then there is a nice winding 30min walk from the bus stop to the park itself that is very scenic and you might even see some Japanese squirrels!

Nikko to Nagano JAPAN | Traditional Japanese Homestay Tour (Tochigi to Nagano Prefecture)
We woke up early to check out of our Airbnb and get on a train by 7:35am, to head to Nagano. We got the customary vending machine coffee and headed off! We took the train fro Imaichi to Utsunomiya. At Utsunomiya station we gave our JR passes to the lady at the desk, who arranged the rest of our transportation to Nagano. We then boarded a unreserved Shinkansen to Omiya. From there it was a 50 minute Shinkansen to Nagano. Once in Nagano we walked to our Airbnb, it was super easy to find, but we were early so we sat in a park near by and enjoyed some early cherry blossoms and a beverage. The Airbnb was amazing! It was a traditional old house with sliding screen doors and two tatami rooms as well as a little seating area and an adorable bathroom. We then set off to explore Nagano!! ...

Nagano Snow Monkeys - Japan Trip Episode 2
Since we were in Japan during the winter, I had to go see the snow monkeys. I first found out about them from some photos from Art Wolfe, the National Geographic photographer. Nagano is only 90 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen and since we got the JR Rail pass for 3 weeks, we were going to see the snow monkeys!
We made it to Nagano, stayed right across the street from the train station, struggled to find open restaurants on New Years Day, ended up at KFC for lunch and an expensive steak place for dinner.
The following morning we took a train, then a bus, then walked for 30 minutes in the snow and ice to get to the snow monkey park. But it was worth it! There were so many monkeys, everywhere, just hanging out, grooming each other, relaxing in the onsen. It was so cool to see them up close, it reminded me of the Galapagos where the animals weren’t afraid of humans.
After the snow monkeys, we went to a temple, searched for some food, then just relaxed and got ready to take the train to Matsumoto the next morning.
