Everyone in Svalbard drives snowmobiles – and you should try too!
When our Arctic landscape is covered by snow, the snowmobile is a fabulous way to get around. Svalbard offer a broad range of organised tours where you can go on a longer snowmobile safari through the majestic nature to the east coast and see amazing sights like icebergs, old trappers’ huts, glacier termini and Arctic animal life.
Other snowmobile trips take you to the Russian settlement of Barentsburg or the ghost town of Pyramiden, or perhaps you would prefer a multi-day safari? There are plenty of options, including for those looking for a shorter trip to experience driving a snowmobile. On a short trip outside Longyearbyen, you can visit a beautiful ice cave or drive by snowmobile to a wilderness camp for a sumptuous dinner. Experience the authentic Svalbard while driving in the Arctic wilderness. Snowmobiles allow you to feel the freedom of covering large areas in a short space of time.

SVALBARD POLAR BEAR RIFLE | Oslo to Svalbard Flight - Longyearbyen Airport
Flying to Svalbard is like a dream come true! And I was looking forward to (hopefully) seeing a Svalbard Polar Bear face to face on this journey.
Although Svalbard is part of Norway, it is an independent territory and not part of the Schengen Area. As a result, flying from Oslo to Svalbard is considered to be an international flight.
The flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen Airport took three hours, and I finally arrived in Svalbard Airport around 1:30 in the morning - the sun started to rise about 20 minutes later. It felt very surreal to experience this.
I stayed in Gjestehuset 102, a great guest house in Svalbard. You can check it out and book it here if you like:
If you are looking for Svalbard accommodations, here's our ultimate list of hotels in Svalbard:
Visit Svalbard offers a free bike rental, which you can arrange while you're in town.
The official Svalbard tourism information, in center Longyearbyen, is a great place to start your Svalbard experience. Here, you can get any information regarding Longyearbyen and things to do in Svalbard, as well as arrange Svalbard hotels and tours.
I was very intrigued with the Svalbard Polar Bear protection measure, so I looked for more information on rifle and gun regulation in Svalbard. I visited Longyear 78 grader, an amazing outdoor store, where you can rent or purchase polar bear guns (or more accurately, polar bear rifle)
To be clear, polar bears are an endangered species and it is not possible to hunt a polar bear in Svalbard. That said, there are tons of polar bears in Svalbard - and you have to carry a rifle and polar bear protection if you need to step outside the Longyearbyen city center.
And check out these cool Svalbard adventures that you can book before your visit!

Svalbard, Norway up in the Arctic Circle, Snowmobile and dog sledding!
Adventuring in Svalbard, Norway. Started out in Longyearbyen with snowmobiling on my first day there and it was amazing! My first time on a snowmobile and just seeing the landscape and fjords was breathtaking! Plus it was way below freezing! The second day was dog sledding and any of my friends that know me know I'm scared of dogs and hate cold weather so this was definitely a step out of my comfort zone.. But I do anything for the adventure.. Another country checked off my bucket list!! Thank you Norway!!
