Snowy Mountains (Snowies), Australia
The Snowy Mountains, sometimes nicknamed the Snowies, are a region of New South Wales in Australia in the south east of the state. The highest region in Australia and one of the cooler areas of New South Wales, they are notable for their ski-fields and are the centre of snow sports in New South Wales.
The mountains are beautiful year round and the region annually attracts some three million visitors seeking nature-based and adventure holidays. Whether you're after a rugged back-to-nature experience, want to be cosseted in alpine splendor or simply feel like going somewhere beautiful, diverse and interesting with the whole family, the chances are high that you'll find it in the Snowy Mountains. Attractions, outdoor activities, tours and events - the Snowy Mountains has it all.
Australia's high country is home to spectacular peaks, clear mountain streams and a plethora of accessible natural attractions for lovers of the outdoors. Walking and horseriding are two great ways to explore the alpine landscape and take in some of the country's most impressive scenery in the warmer months.
The Snowy Mountains is a significant and untamable high country where many Australian myths and traditions of Australian identity were born. Whether from nature's pure beauty or legends of early settlers, there's a story to be told and history to be learnt - from icons like the heights of Mount Kosciuszko to the famous high country huts, to Snowy Hydro feats of ingenuity, beautiful mountain brumbies and to rivers that flow with legends.
The Snowy Mountains Scheme is one of Australia's largest engineering and construction operations. The ideas behind the scheme is to divert the winter snowmelt waters westward into the Murrumbidgee rivers, irrigating large parts of inland Australia and at the same time generating Hydro-Electricity. There are several large lakes, tunnels, and Hydro power stations that form part of the scheme that you can visit. Tours take visitors a kilometre into the mountainside and offer a vivid insight into the sheer scope of this iconic part of the nation's post-war development.

Hiking Through Australia's Blue & Snowy Mountains in New South Wales
The sixth largest country in the world, Australia is an incredibly diverse and beautiful land, famous for its natural wonders, wide open spaces, beaches, deserts, and the outback.
On its South Eastern edge, you’ll find New South Wales—Australia’s most populous state, and home to the vibrant, ocean-side city of Sydney. It also happens to be an outdoor adventure traveller's paradise, with a surprising number of breathtaking National Parks, lush rain forest and dramatic mountain ranges, including Australia’s highest peak and the spectacular canyons of the Blue Mountains.
In this episode of Trackin' Dirt, we tackle climbing Mount Kosciuszko in a blizzard and hike and rappel from some epic canyons in the Blue Mountains—I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed being there!

A Weekend in the Australian Backcountry // Snowy Mountains
A 25-strong group of Explorers spent a weekend shredding in the Kosciuszko backcountry, learning skills and earning turns. An event run by We Are Explorers in partnership with Arc’teryx.
What's so special about the Australian backcountry? We asked Pro skier Coen Bennie-Faull and this is what he had to say:

Australia's high country is home to spectacular peaks, clear mountain streams and cool, crisp air, which make an interesting setting for any holiday. Natural occuring features in the Snowy Region abound and are for the most part easily accessible by car. More than half of the alpine habitat in Australia falls inside the Snowy Mountains boundaries. Coupled with the abundance of unpolluted freshwater streams, the famous Murray and Snowy Rivers, magnificent valleys and undulating meadow, the region is proudly unique and abundant in its natural attractions.
National Parks cover a fairly large area of the Snowies, including Kosciuszko National Park, the largest National Park in NSW and home to Mount Kosciuszko, Australias highest mountain at 2228metres. Other parks in the area include, Wadbilliga, Deua, Namadgi and South East Forests National Parks.

New South Wales faces a critical power shortage after Snowy Mountains fire | 7NEWS
People in New South Wales are being asked to reduce unnecessary power usage after a lose of transmission lines in the Snowy Mountains region says the NSW Minister for Energy Matt Kean MP.
People in New South Wales can expect to experience power 'brown outs'.
Statement from NSW Minister for Energy Matt Kean MP: The extensive bushfire activity in the Snowy Mountains and other areas of the state have had an impact on our electricity supplies. The Australian Energy Markey operator (AEMO), Transgrid and the NSW and ACT Governments are working to keep power supplies on, but due to today's weather conditions as we approach the evening peak there may be a need to turn off power in parts of the network to keep the overall system secure. We are asking all consumers to be mindful of any unnecessary electricity usage. Things you can do to help include:
- Making sure pool pumps are off
- Setting air conditioners to 24 or 25 degrees not using washing machines, dishwashers or dryers turning off appliances and lights in rooms that are not being used.
AEMO is also working with large load electricity customers to reduce their electricity consumption where possible.

Australian Landscape in Sheep Country, Snowy Mountains, NSW
I'm in sheep country, Snowy Mountains near Cooma with winter snow disappearing rapidly from the horizon. I posted a video recently of the Aussie outback from 40,000 feet, this time I'm feet on the ground, showing the vastness of our land they call Australia. There are not many houses around here and the properties can be quite large. The climate and landscape are ideal for wool growing, something that made Australia what it is today. Also check out the country style letter boxes where mail is delivered by 4WD to the roadside of each property.
Winter in Australia | A Day in Snowy Mountains, NSW
We went on a day tour to Australia's top snow destination, Perisher in the Snowy Mountains, just 5 hours from Sydney! Who knew you could actually see snow down under!?
