German Brewer Gilde Reveals US Expansion Plans
German Brewer Plans to Operate Large Manufacturing Brewery in Charlotte
German brewer Gilde has an ambitious plan to build one of the largest individual craft brewing facilities in the United States.
According to the Charlotte Observer, the company is looking into the possibility of eventually brewing upwards of 500,000 barrels annually in North Carolina, however the timetable for beginning that project is still nearly three years away.
In the meantime, Gilde CEO Karsten Uhlmann told the outlet that his company would begin by importing beer into the U.S. via Anheuser-Busch wholesaler Adams Beverages this month.
The Hanover-headquartered beer company — which produced 850,000 barrels of beer last year — then plans to open a 5,000 sq. ft. small-batch brewery called “The Embassy” before the end of 2019. Two-to-three years later, Uhlmann added, the company plans to open a 100,000 sq. ft. facility capable of being scaled to 500,000 barrels that will also feature a taproom, beer garden and kitchen.
Pennsylvania Lawmakers Lower Brewery Sales Tax
Pennsylvania lawmakers and Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday approved legislation (H.B. 262) to lower an impending sales tax on beer sold in taprooms, tasting rooms and brewpubs. In a press release, the Brewers of PA announced that after 18 months of negotiations with legislators and the governor’s office, an agreement had been reached.
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (DOR) was slated to begin collecting a 6 percent sales tax for every dollar of beer sold directly to consumers at brewery locations starting July 1. That tax would have been on top of an existing $2.48 per barrel state excise tax that Pennsylvania beer companies already pay.
However, H.B. 262 amends to the tax code to allow breweries to “pay 6 percent sales tax on 25 percent of the retail sale” of a pint. According to the Brewers of PA, that formula is in line with the wholesale price paid for beer by restaurants, bars and grocery stores.
Canopy Growth Corporation Terminates Co-Founder and Co-CEO Bruce Linton
Canopy Growth Corporation (TSE: WEED) today announced that co-CEO Bruce Linton has stepped down as chief executive and board member.
However, Linton, who co-founded the company in 2013, called into CNBC to clarify that he was fired from the world’s largest cannabis company.
“I think stepping down might not be the right phrase,” he said. “I was terminated.”
Mark Zekulin, who had been co-CEO with Linton, will takeover as the sole CEO, while Canopy works to identify a replacement.
Last August, Constellation Brands upped its investment in the company, spending $4 billion to acquire 104.5 million shares of Canopy, raising its stake to about 38 percent.
In April, it struck a deal with Acreage Holdings, agreeing to acquire the New York-based cannabis company for $3.4 billion when marijuana becomes federally legal in the U.S.
Linton had a knack for deal making, and helped lead a company that was growing revenue at a healthy clip, but Canopy last month reported a record low gross margin of 16 percent during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2019, and an EBITDA loss of $98 million.
Meanwhile, during Constellation Brands’ first quarter earnings call, CEO Bill Newlands said the company was “not pleased” with Canopy’s recent financial results.

Tröegs is a family nickname, from the founders' surname Trogner. When combined with a Flemish word Kroeg, meaning pub, we get Tröegs.
Chris and John Trogner have been working hard to get Central Pennsylvania on the brewing map. Since 1997, these Mechanicsburg natives have been handcrafting world-class beers that combine traditional English brewing techniques with the eclecticism of new American brewing. But how they reached this point is as compelling as where they are headed.
Chris and John, 18 months apart in age, were simultaneously intrigued by the art of handcrafting beer while living some 1,750 miles apart—Chris in Boulder, Colorado and John in Philadelphia.
John, the older brother, often found relief from his not-so-satisfying work in the Philadelphia real estate market at the nearby Dock Street Brewpub. At the same time, Philadelphia was proving to be a booming beer city with dozens of neighborhood bars that cared as much about beer as they did about food.
Chris was drawn to Colorado for the skiing opportunities, as well as educational ones. In between the two, he found himself in the midst of craft-brewing nirvana as more than 100 breweries appeared throughout the state.
As Chris and John would talk, a flicker of an idea gradually turned into a full-blown business plan. The brothers had always dreamed about starting a business together, and now they had brewed the perfect idea.
John moved to Boulder, and within days secured a job cleaning tanks at the Oasis Brewpub. Over the next three years he would learn the brewing business from the inside out. Along the way, he took brewing classes at the University of California at Davis and Chicago's Siebel Institute of Technology.
With John knee-deep in yeast, hops and barley, Chris focused on marketing, sales and management classes. He also managed a restaurant to determine whether a brewpub or a brewery would be a better business model. The brothers decided to leave the food to someone else and focus on beer. After graduating, Chris went to England to take an intensive brewing class at the University of Sunderland.
The brothers needed to decide where to build the brewery; and while Colorado offered the right audience, it also meant a lot of competition. After a lot of thought, Chris and John decided to return to their roots and use their brewing skills in the Mid-Atlantic States.
Tröegs Brewing Company was established in 1997. Today, the brewery produces six year-round and five seasonal beers including: HopBack Amber Ale, Troegenator Doublebock, DreamWeaver Wheat, Perpetual IPA, JavaHead Stout, Tröegs Pale Ale, Nugget Nectar, Dead Reckoning Porter, Sunshine Pils, The Mad Elf, and Flying Mouflan. Tröegs currently distributes its product in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Washington D.C., Maryland, Delaware, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

Ithaca Nut Brown The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer enjoy Ithaca Brewing's Nut Brown Ale. In addition, Shagdog grabs his pussy and shows it to the World, Jammer sits by horrified! The guys make a movie recommendation, discuss relationships, and much, much, more!
Brewed by: Ithaca Beer Company New York, United States
The rich mahogany hue of the Nut Brown is the first thing you will notice about this complex, malty brew. A delicate blend of chocolate malt, caramel malt, and four other malts brings to this beer a chocolatey sweetness, and hints of coffee. The malt character is subtly balanced with Northdown and Fuggles hops.

Ithaca Beer Co. -- A Story about the Little Brewery that Could
Ithaca is a city with a strong sense of community and a passion for locally produced products. There are many local wineries, however people always questioned why there was no local brewery. Dan Mitchell, the founder of the Ithaca Beer Company, set out to answer that question by creating a brewery that would exemplify The Spirit of the Finger Lakes.
Ithaca Street front sign
The original concept for the brewery began in 1995, but it wasn't until December of 1997 that the brewing system was purchased. It was discovered by chance after investigating another system in Texas that looked great on paper, but wasn't adequate for the needs of the brewery. After passing on that system Dan had some time to kill and decided to travel around. During a visit to a brewpub in Austin, TX he discovered what would become our brewing system. He went in and asked them what kind of beers they made. They told him that they had stopped making beer and were actually preparing to sell their system. After checking it out the purchase was made and a month later the system was shipped up to Ithaca.
Five months of renovation took place at our 606 Elmira Rd. location to turn it in to a functional brewery. After all the hard work renovating and setting up the equipment we were ready to begin the actual process of creating beer! The operation started small with only a couple of people (Dan and our previous Brew Master Jeff Conuel) doing everything that needed to be done to get the business off the ground. From the making of the beer, the packaging, the selling, and the mountains of paperwork necessary to operate a brewery they did it all. In December of '98 the brewery officially opened.
Since then, we've come a long way and grown considerably through lots of tireless work by a very dedicated staff. Just recently our hard work paid off when we were awarded 2 medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado in 2008.
Brewery ImageIthaca Beer Company now sells beer throughout New York State, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Ohio. Other states are in the works as we continue to expand our capacity. Even while growing we haven't forgotten our commitment to crafting quality beers and being a part of the community that has supported us. As always we strive to capture the spirit of the Finger Lakes and share it with you.
Craft Brew News # 13 - Caviar and Cannabis in Hollywood

Craft Brew News – 01/11/19
0.05 (Blood Alcohol Content) BAC Limit Takes Effect in Utah
Utah will have the toughest drunk driving laws in the nation as of December 30, according to NPR. The state’s 0.05 blood alcohol content limit goes into effect just one day before New Year’s Eve.
The legal limit for the rest of the country remains 0.08., which the American Beverage Institute told NPR would take about four drinks for a 180-pound man to reach. It would only take two drinks for a 180-pound man to hit Utah’s new 0.05 limit, however.
Utah’s 0.05 BAC limit was initially signed into law in March 2017, but it took more than a year to implement due to a review process that was intended to ensure it didn’t lead to any unintended consequences. As the new BAC limit goes into effect, Utah continues to be an outlier on alcohol-related laws. The state will soon be one of the last in the nation the bar grocery, convenience and big box stores from selling beer above 3.2 alcohol by weight.
Threes Brewing Partners with Caviar for Home Delivery
New York’s Threes Brewing Company has partnered with delivery service Caviar to offer on-demand beer delivery within a four-mile radius of its taproom in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood. The company hopes to expand the service in the future.
There is a $15 minimum for deliveries, which shouldn’t be an issue since prices range from $15 for a 500 mL bottle to a $20 4-pack of cans.
Scotty’s Brewhouse Chain Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
The Scotty’s Brewhouse brewpub chain has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to Inside Indiana Business.
Before the calendars flip to 2019, Scotty’s plans to close four unprofitable locations in Muncie and Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as Carmel and Waco, Texas.
In a press release, Scotty’s Brewhouse president Chris Martin said the company’s focus will shift to “growing the brand through franchising as well as management agreements.”
In December 2016, Scotty’s founder Scott Wise sold the chain, which he founded in 1996, along with two Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. brewpubs to a subsidiary of Arizona-based Due North Holdings LLC.
West Hollywood Approves Cannabis Cafes and Restaurants
The city of West Hollywood, California, recently approved several applications for cannabis restaurants, cafes and lounges, according to Eater Los Angeles. Among the approved locations are:
Eight cafes where only edibles can be consumed
Eight lounges where cannabis smoking, vaping and edible consumption will be permitted
Eight medical dispensaries
Eight adult-use retailers
Eight cannabis delivery services
Approved businesses now have a year to obtain a business license through the city and secure storefronts.
States Eyeing Cannabis Legalization in 2019
Marijuana Moment editor and Forbes contributor Tom Angell recently examined the states that appear poised to legalize recreational use cannabis in 2019. Those states include Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Other states such as Kansas, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Texas and South Carolina could follow suit through ballot initiatives or the legalization of medical use cannabis.
So far, 10 states have legalized recreational use cannabis, and 33 states allow marijuana use for medical purposes.

Central New York: Brew Central – Cooperstown Distillery
Longtime restaurateur Eugene Marra focused on food, wine and spirits as part of his profession, a career that’s lasted more than 45 years. A student of his winemaking grandfather, he took his appreciation beyond the glass when he started a vineyard in northern Georgia around 1991.
Eugene’s passion for fine spirits fueled his interest in becoming a distiller in the late 2000s, just as New York state was increasing its support of small-batch producers. Today the New York City native takes pride in the all-New York state ingredients that make up his whiskey, bourbon, gin and vodka.
The names reference Cooperstown’s baseball roots and other historic assets, but Eugene is always looking forward. The former chef continues to craft new recipes that contribute to New York’s growing reputation for high-quality distilleries.
Eugene: Having been in the restaurant business most of my life, I've dabbled in food, wine, and spirits for the last 45 years actually. Coming to Cooperstown was an evolution of a great friendship in a business relationship where I was doing some consulting for a restaurant in Cooperstown, fell in love with the town. Simultaneously with that, New York State was rewriting most of their craft distilling legislation, which was beginning to get very interesting for me as an entrepreneur to come back to New York. I'm a native New Yorker. It was sort of a dream come dream true. The marriage of Cooperstown and spirits was always implicit in our business model from day one.
I always knew that part of the strategy of developing this brand in Cooperstown was predicated on that we could marry baseball and spirits. Of course, we started the strategize on the baseball bottle, the decanter bottle, which is our hands down most significant marketing tool that we have is our Abner Doubleday baseball decanter, which has been a huge success for us. We spent almost a year in prototypes with a mechanical engineer. It took a lot of planning. We got it down, right down to the 108 stitches on the baseball seams like a regulation baseball. We gleaned Doubleday's actual autograph from the archives. If you turn it upside down, it's got the baseball diamond. It's got an ash-finish top, just like a baseball bat. Even the box is a period-style baseball box like the old baseballs used to come in. We really thought that that was a key piece of our marketing strategy: the baseball bottle.
Rory: New York is doing great things with this craft distilling movement. I'm originally from Pennsylvania. It's a little bit more state controlled to liquor. New York is saying, We see this chance for revenue here. Go for it, guys. Make some great spirits. There's demand for it. We'll help you out. You have the state on your side which is a great thing. Then I feel New York State as a whole, there's a lot of people that are agriculturally driven here. Ninety-five percent of ingredients come from the state. All my grains, right now, are coming from Canajoharie. I'm getting my grains 20 miles north of here. Hopefully, within anybody another month, there's going to be a cooper coming online, a cooperage, a place that builds barrels. Within about another month, I won't have to go more than an hour drive to get grains for bourbon and whiskey. I won't have to go more than an hour drive to get those barrels. I think New York is going to be known for making some great bourbons here in the future.
Eugene: Being in Cooperstown was a very important piece of our business model. We knew this was a great place for us. We knew that the village would support us. We knew that it was ripe for the picking: marrying baseball and spirits. We think we've done a great job with it.
Whether tipping a farm-to-glass beer at a brewpub, sampling some moonshine or enjoying a sip of hard cider or wine, you’ll be a part of something special in Brew Central. Central New York brewers, distillers, publicans and vintners offer the state’s best craft beverages on par with any of the United States’ finest pints. Capital Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in Washington, D.C.
Washington Brewery–the city’s first brewery–opened in 1796. Brewer barons like Christian Heurich and Albert Carry dominated the taps of city saloons until production ground to a halt with Prohibition. Only Heurich survived, and when the venerable institution closed in 1956, Washington, DC, was without a brewery for 55 years. Author and beer scholar Garrett Peck taps this history while introducing readers to the bold new brewers leading the capital’s recent craft beer revival. A book signing will follow the program.

It's so important to know what you don't know, and when it comes to getting a liquor license my advice to you would be to find somebody who knows what they're doing. Because it can be a very complicated and long and drawn out process.
We have a person in our company who does liquor licenses for us, and he does an amazing job. So I asked him, I said, what is it that you need to do, what do you need to have. He sent me a four page single spaced document that says two pages of what you have to have prepared and then two pages of what you have to do. So, I'm going to tell you that I would suggest that you get an attorney, someone who's practiced at getting liquor licenses, knows the process, knows what you need to have prepared, and knows what to do.
In New York City an average liquor license costs about four thousand dollars plus about another four thousand dollars to have someone help guide you through the process. You're still going to have a lot of work to do, but they're going to make sure that you follow all the correct steps.
Now, if you want to do it yourself, every state has a website with their state liquor authority that describes exactly what you need to do to prepare for and apply for a liquor license. It's never too early to start. It can take a lot longer than you think. And, you need to have a lot of things prepared. So, as soon as you think you might be opening a restaurant that's going to serve alcoholic beverages, start learning what you need to have prepared and start the process of applying for your liquor license.
Liquor licenses come in a couple of different types. There are wine and beer licenses that allow you to serve wine and beer, and full liquor licenses that also allow you to serve liquor and alcohol. It's also true that there are two types of licenses that either allow you to serve liquor on premises to your guests to consume it in your restaurant, or off premises, like a liquor store, where it's sold for consumption outside of the licensed premises.
A liquor license is a big responsibility. It means that you're going to be serving alcohol to people. There are a lot of laws and regulations that cover the serving of alcohol. You need to be very aware of them. It's also a big responsibility, because people who are intoxicated can do terrible things, and you have a big liability as a restaurant owner who serves alcohol. Training your staff in responsibly serving alcohol is a critical part of taking care of your business and taking care of your patrons.
The website in New York is sla.ny.gov. I'm sure whatever state you're in there's a similar website. When you go there you're going to find out some very interesting things. For example, you can't have a liquor license within 200 feet of a school or place of worship. You also can't have a liquor license within 500 feet of another licensed establishment. You'll also find out that, in addition to applying with the state liquor authority, in New York you have to go before a community board and have it approved.
There are a lot of things you need to do, and you need to spend the time, and do the research, and do the work that it takes to apply for your license.
Beer Wars
Beer Wars is a 2009 documentary film about the American beer industry. In particular, it covers the differences between large corporate breweries, namely Anheuser-Busch, the Miller Brewing Company, and the Coors Brewing Company opposed to smaller breweries like Dogfish Head Brewery, Moonshot 69, Yuengling, Stone Brewing Co., and other producers of craft beer. Also covered is how advertising and lobbyists are used to control the beer market, implying that these things harm competition and consumer choice.
Throughout the film, there is a theme that the smallest breweries have next to no chance to compete due to the sheer volume of advertising and outdated beer distribution laws. The original laws demanded a three-tier system to separate the powers of selling beer. The law demands that the beer brewer cannot deliver directly to the retailer, supposedly creating a separation of powers resembling the US government's legislative, judicial, and executive branches. The film claims these laws are now inhibiting growth of smaller brewers and therefore allowing the largest brewers (Coors, Anheuser-Busch, and Miller) to maintain an oligopoly on beer.
