Hiking in Seoraksan National Park, South Korea
Seoraksan is the third highest mountain in South Korea. Hiking its national park was the best thing I did during my trip to South Korea. Its chilly weather, birds tweeting in the trees, waterfalls, and many beautiful sites were all worth my forty-five minute or so walk. Reaching its top (through cable car) was just breath-taking. I will do it again. :)

National parks offer special events in celebration of fall
오색찬란 단풍 절정...국립공원 행사 풍성
Many people in Korea are going to the mountains to enjoy the sights of the changing season.
For the next week, national parks around the country are offering a variety of special events to accompany the fall foliage.
Lee Minyoung has the details.
In time for the change of season, national parks in Korea are working to promote local specialties and revive regional economies by offering a variety of tourism programs.
One of the best autumn destinations in the country is Mount Jirisan in Gyeongsangnam-do Province.
Until next week, people visiting the mountain can join ecotourism activities and taste some regional delicacies.
Seoraksan National Park in Gangwon-do Province and Juwangsan National Park in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, which are both famous for their scenic views, will both host photo exhibitions and open a marketplace of local goods like potatoes and apples.
Chiaksan National Park in Gangwon-do Province is offering camping school courses and cultural performances for their visitors.
Many other national parks around the country like Bukhansan, which is especially popular among citizens of Seoul, will also offer programs in the coming week.
Potential hikers are advised to choose their course wisely.
People should select the right trail for their health and enjoy the colorful fall foliage.
The state agency is also asking guests to remove food packaging and other potential garbage before setting out on a hike.
This will not only help them pack light, but will help cut down on the amount of trash thrown onto the mountains by a growing number of hikers.

Andrew Douch, a Man of the Baekdudaegan
70 days, 735 km.
Andrew Douch is the first foreigner to have completed this hike across the Baekdudaegan, the mountain range that spans across the Korean peninsula. This New Zealand man's dream is to climb up all of Korea's top 100 mountains.
In 2000, Douch arrived in Korea as an English teacher, and fell in love with Korea's intimate mountains, their beautiful scenery, and the villages tucked into the hills. Every weekend since then, he has been traveling all over Korea in search of beautiful mountains.
In 2007, he and a friend decided to challenge themselves to the Baekdudaegan. Douch walked 735 km over 70 days - the first foreigner to complete the hike. He even published a book about the Baekdudaegan, demonstrating his love for Korean mountains.
In 2013, Douch will leave for New Zealand for a five-month hike. Which of Korea's mountains does he want to visit before he returns home? We follow him on that last hike. Two weeks before his departure, Douch meets up with the hiking friends he has made over the years. He drives for two hours to Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to reach Hwagak Mountain. Who is waiting for Douch there? We join Douch in his farewell party with his mountain friends.
