Inside the World’s Oldest Restaurant - Madrid's Sobrino de Botin
hosco tv met with Antonio González, co-owner and director of the oldest restaurant in the world: Sobrino de Botin, in Madrid.
The restaurant opened in 1725 and belonged to Botin’s family before Antonio’s ascendants took over in 1930. Since then, his family has been running what he describes as a magical place. Botin has kept the same name, location and activity since its opening and has never ceased operation, leading to it having a place in the Guinness Book of World Records . Antonio says that the success of Botin lies, especially, in the history between its walls, making it not only a restaurant but also a museum. Famous writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, and F. Scott Fitzgerald mentioned the restaurant in their novels, making it very well known throughout the years. Watch the video to find out more about this restaurant full of magic.

Eating at the oldest restaurant in the world. Madrid's 300 year old Sobrino de Botin.
Welcome to Madrid, city of the living, the vibrant and elegant capital of Spain and a cosmopolitan jewel of the Iberian peninsula. With a rich and ancient past you can literally taste Madrid’s history in its food, and while it’s easy to get lost in the cobblestone lined streets, there is one place where you can literally step back into history, or at least your stomach can. Restaurante Sobrino de Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world.
This is one of the best meals you can have in Spain, if not the world. But don’t take my word, listen to Hemingway who writes about Botin in Death in the Afternoon: “…but, in the meantime, I would prefer to dine on suckling pig at Botín than sit and think about the accidents which my friends could suffer.” I have to agree Ernie, the suckling pig is better then listening to all the accidents your friends could suffer (who are you hanging out with bro?), infant dear Papa loved Botin so much he wrote about it again in the Sun Also Rises: “We lunched upstairs at Botin´s. It is one of the best restaurants in the world. We had roast young suckling pig and drank rioja alta. Brett did not eat much. She never ate much. I ate a very big meal and drank three bottles of rioja alta.”
Im not sure what’s up with Brett, because I was salivating before I even got through the front door. Let’s break down the meal for you a bit … first the finest succulent pigs are first basted then slow roasted in a clay pot in this ancient wood burning oven for hours until the color of dulce de leche. Then there is the ballet where they are butchered, split and carved by these culinary magicians. Throw in a little au jus and some roasted potatoes, add back the finely carved roast pig, and you have a dish so good it’s kept them in business for 300 years making them the oldest restaurant in the world, filled not with just amazing food, but amazing history.
Every corner of this restaurant had some amazing curio from the past that makes it so much more then just a place to eat. Beautiful stained glass windows, and fine pieces of porcelain line the walls, halls and even the steps here making it more like a museum then a restaurant. Jose had me running up and down through three floors of 3 centuries of Spanish history that this unique restaurant kept safe.
I am happy to report that Botin’s pedigree is well deserved and the meal here lives up to the legend. Crispy, mouth melting crackling candy coating a juicy pillow of flavorful meat that shreds on the fork, that once placed in your mouth renders the diner absolutely speechless . In a word this meal is simply fantastic, and a good indication that Botin will be here for another 300 years if we’re lucky.

3. MADRID’S MOST HISTORIC RESTAURANTS! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
When I moved to Madrid, I fell in love with two tings - the history and the food. And over the years I’ve loved spending time in places that combine both… taverns & restaurants that are absolutely dripping with history and atmosphere. In this video, Yoly and I take you to 5 of my favourite historic restaurants and tapas bars… and not only do we eat the food, but also I tell you the stories behind these remarkable places that we’re so lucky to have on our doorstep!
▶ BOOKS I MENTION IN THE VIDEO
DON QUIXOTE:
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS:
1. First we visit Taberna Antonio Sánchez, which is actually the oldest still-running tavern in the city (not to be confused with Botin, which is the oldest still running restaurant in the world). This place has the most remarkable decor that hasn’t changed since the 1830s. And downstairs is a fascinating hidden wine cellar.
2. Then we head into Madrid’s Literary Quarter to Casa Alberto. These are the streets Miguel de Cervantes’ famous author of Don Quixote lived in. And they’re wonderful to wander. Casa Alberto is always heaving, and it’s perfect for a quick vermouth, or something a little more substantial… like the bull tail stew we order.
3. Next up it’s Taberna La Bola, where we get a special behind-the-scenes visit to the kitchen, where they make their famous cocido madrileño stew the old fashioned way - in clay pots and on a charcoal stove. It’s a huge feast, but it’s worth it!
4. Casa Ciriaco is part bar, part restaurant… and it’s always heaving. I love hanging out in the tapas bar area and sipping on wine, or heading through to the restaurant where it just screams old Madrid with its photos of famous guests.
5. The grande finale! Restaurant Botín… aka Sobrino de Botín. We see the 300-year-old oven, explore the four magical floors and then sit down in Hemingway’s table for a plate of incredible roast suckling pig. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Sobrino de Botín- Oldest Restaurant in the world
Sobrino de Botín in Madrid, Spain founded in 1725, is the oldest restaurant continuously operating in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. On our second day in Madrid we had our lunch in this restaurant. We are lucky we are able to reserve a table immediately(just walk in). We ordered roasted lamb and roasted suckling pig. The price is not that expensive but for the experience.. its worth it!
Have a Seat at the Oldest Restaurant in the World
Botín Restaurant has kept the flame burning for the past 293 years … literally. Ever since the doors opened in 1725, the oven has been sizzling continuously, never to be extinguished. According to deputy manager Luis Javier Sànchez Alvarez, the oven is the crown jewel of the restaurant and the fundamental element of their most popular dish, the roast suckling pig. The recipes used today have been passed down from generation to generation, keeping the legacy of these traditional dishes alive. With the honor of being the oldest restaurant in the world, Alvarez hopes to keep the doors open for centuries to come.

Comida del RESTAURANTE MÁS VIEJO DEL MUNDO |Sobrino de Botín| Madrid, España |Cocochickyy|
???????????????????????????????? ÁBREME!!! ♥️
HOLAAA AMIGUINES!!!

Tapas Tour & OLDEST RESTAURANT in The WORLD in Madrid Spain
On this food adventure, I went to tour the San Miguel Market in Madrid, Spain. This is a great place to visit, sampling some of the best Madrid's market food has to offer. After the market, I went to El Sur to eat gambas, which is shrimp with garlic sauce, and I had some Cuban pulled pork. That pork was my favorite dish there. For dessert, I ate churros with hot chocolate, and this place was incredibly packed, so get ready to wait in line! To end my food day, I went to one of the oldest restaurants in Spain, Botin and it's famous for its roast suckling pig!

THIS RESTAURANT IS UNBELIEVABLE!
Did you know that the world's oldest restaurant is in Madrid, dating back to the year 1725? It's even verified by Guinness World Records!
I had no clue that this place existed until someone commented on my Instagram post this morning telling me, so I walked in the door this evening and was welcomed with open arms and access to film all of the hidden gems inside this 16th century building.
Aside from being so ancient, the food was absolutely spectacular -- roast suckling pig was almost as good as the lechon in the Philippines!
