The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, are scheduled to take place from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi, Russia, with some events held in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR in 1991. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, Russia - Venue Preview - Unravel Travel TV
Sochi 2014 staged in Russia will be the most compact Winter Games in the history of the Olympic Movement. It will be possible to get from one venue to another in just a matter of minutes and all Olympic and Paralympic competition will take place in the same venues. It is for this reason that all athletic facilities for the Sochi 2014 Games are being built with the needs of disabled people in mind. Eleven athletic venues will be built for the Sochi 2014 Games, which will be divided into two clusters - mountain and coastal. The clusters will be located within 48km of each other, which is less than a 30 minute ride along a new railway.
Each cluster will contain an Olympic Village. The travel time from the Olympic Village to a competition venue in the coastal cluster will be no more than five minutes. Additionally, travel time from the Olympic Village to a competition venue in the mountain cluster is less than 15 minutes. The central focus of the coastal cluster will be the Olympic Park. It will connect up all competition venues, the parking zone and the infrastructure elements. For the first time in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, all ice arenas will be within walking distance of one other. The Olympic Park will be able to accommodate about 70,000 visitors when full. The Mountain Cluster will include Biathlon and Ski Complexes, a Bobsleigh Track, a Ski Center, a Ski Jump Complex, as well as a Snowboard Park and Freestyle Center.
5,500 Olympic athletes, 1,350 Paralympic athletes, 25,000 volunteers, and 13,000 members of the press will come to the Games in Sochi. Sports venues in the Olympic Park will be visited daily by more than 75,000 people, and the Games' television audience will be approximately 3 billion viewers! In addition, residents of Russia's major cities will be able to watch a live television broadcast of the Olympic events at specially equipped Olympic sites called Live Sites. The Live Sites will be traditional celebration sites in city centers which will be equipped with big screens, sound, light, and a stage for people to watch the Games together, experience the atmosphere, and celebrate the victories of Russian athletes. It is expected that a total of up to 30 million people will visit the Live Sites, so almost every family in Russia will be able to be part of the Games in Sochi.

RUSSIA SOCHI GAY RIGHTS (Olympic charter supports gay rights - campaigner)
With the Winter Olympics only two days away, gay rights campaigners called for an end to discrimination as activists staged protests in 20 cities around the world on Wednesday (February 5). Activists from the All Out gay rights group have urged major corporate sponsors to speak out about the way Games host Russia treats gay people.
Rights groups have also written to the heads of the 10 global Olympic sponsors -- which also include U.S. consumer goods group Procter & Gamble and Coca-Cola -- calling on them to use their marketing to promote equality.
In the context of Sochi I think, how the LGBT community is being talked about or treated is on display more so than it would be in other countries, Hudson Taylor, the Executive Director of gay rights group Athlete Ally said at the Russian Black Sea resort.
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the Games in Sochi to showcase a strong, modern Russia but attention has also focused on a law passed last year that critics say fuels discrimination against gays and lesbians. The issue has caused embarrassment for the major companies who pay around 100 million US dollars each for rights to sponsor the Olympics over a four-year period and want to tap into a feelgood atmosphere at Games time.
Sponsors have said they are opposed to discrimination but say it is up to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ensure that the Games are free of prejudice.
When we look at the Olympic charter and we look at the language of the principles of Olympism, they so clearly speak against discrimination. Rule two is actually in the mission and vision of the Olympics, is that we should act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic movement so I think within the charter itself there is a drive to create change and promote progress and although it can be seen as political, it is really not about politics, it's about principles, Taylor said.
Athletes face a dilemma over whether to speak out and risk falling foul of another IOC rule outlawing political protests at Games. Last week the IOC said athletes at the Winter Olympics may be punished for making statements on the podium against Russia's anti-gay laws or human rights record but could do so at news conferences without fear of sanction. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, explained that under the Olympic Charter political protests and demonstrations within venues are not allowed. There's been a very cautious environment for an athlete looking to make a statement, said Taylor.
That being said having the president of the IOC say that athletes can say what they want interviews. I think that is an enormous stamp of approval and will make many athletes feel comfortable stating their mind on these issues.
Athlete Ally, a group formed to fight homophobia in sport, is running a campaign based on Principle 6 of the Olympic charter which spells out a commitment to equality for all.
It is using the Principle 6 tag on social media and a range of clothing to get its message across and sees it as a way for athletes to make their point within the rules.
So with the Principle 6 campaign we now have over 50 current and former Olympic athletes that have signed on to support what we're trying to do and I think that that is a tremendous statement. A handful of those Olympians are here competing at Sochi so I think that this will be remembered as a Games in which athletes stood up for human rights, in which they upheld the Olympic charter and the Olympic values, Taylor said.
Sochi 2014 Price Tag 'Enormous'
The Winter Olympics in Sochi will begin in less than a week, and they're already shaping up to become the most expensive in history. When Russia won the bid to host the games it planned on spending only 12 billion dollars. Recent reports suggest that the real price tag has ended up being several times higher than that Anya Ardayeva reports from Sochi.

Russia: Plane load of NHL stars lands in Sochi
Ice hockey stars from Canada, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Slovenia stepped off their plane onto Russian soil at Sochi airport on Monday, including the first Slovenian ever to play professional hockey in the North American league, Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar.
Among the other players were Swedes Erik Carlsson, defenceman for the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson and Henrik Lundqvist, the Swedish goaltender and former Olympic gold medalist.
The Czech team will boast legendary right winger Jaromir Jagr, five time recipient of the Art Ross Trophy for top scorer in the NHL.

INTRO: The ASEAN-Russia Culture Ministers Meeting was held on Thursday May 16th in the city of Sochi, the Russian Federation. Lao Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara was among delegations of ministries and agencies responsible for culture of all ASEAN Member States and the Ministry of Culture of Russia participated in the meeting.
STORY: This is the first ministerial meeting on culture between ASEAN and the Russian Federation aiming to strengthen friendships and people-to-people contacts, and broaden ties in the field of culture and the arts.
The ASEAN Secretariat was led by Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN, and the Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.

Vigil in Sochi for the victims of the plane crash
(25 Dec 2016) People in Sochi visited the Russian city's port on Sunday night to pay their respects to the victims of the morning's plane crash.
Visitors brought candles and flowers to create a memorial to the 92 people believed killed when the Tu-154 crashed into the Black Sea on Sunday minutes after taking off from Sochi.
