Sochi 1961, Resort for the People
In 1961, I traveled with my father, Harvey Richards, and step mother, Alice, to the Soviet Union to help them make a film about the USSR to encourage better understanding and friendship between the United States and the USSR. One of our stops was in Sochi, Resort for the People, on the Black Sea, where Harvey filmed and photographed the town and the people. A photo gallery and two films are available on the Harvey Richards Media Archive about Sochi and our other stops during that summer. This video is a compilation of some of the still photos accompanied by the song Near Black Sea downloaded from sovmusic.ru web site. Together they offer a relaxing tour of a marvelous moment of time when working people could visit a resort for the people. With the anti-Soviet propaganda machine dusted off and turned into the anti-Russia machine for the winter Olympics, this little video might be a welcome antidote for the poisoned atmosphere created by the mainstream media, which my father would have appreciated.

What Does Russia Look Like? Sochi
What Does Russia Look Like? Walking along the streets through Central Sochi to the Sochi Grand Marina. Russia isn't snow and bears, but has many climates that even grow palm trees! Walking through everyday Russia, in the resort town of Sochi on the Black Sea. Looking for things to do in Sochi? Try strolling along from the Sochi train station along the tree lined boulevards to the historic marina. Take selfies at the World Cup tourist signs in the square. Stop to buy a glass of refreshing glass of Russian Bread Kvass or lemonade from the kiosks. Very Russian, and a very relaxing walk.
[HQ] Russia, Black Sea - Holiday Resort Sochi / Sotschi |
Sochi is a Russian resort city, situated in Krasnodar Krai just north of the southern Russian border. It sprawls along the shores of the Black Sea and against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. At 145 km (90 mi), Greater Sochi claims to be the longest city in Europe.[3] As of the 2002 Census, it had a population of 328,809,[1] down from 336,514 recorded in the 1989 Census. In 2006, the population was estimated to be 395,012.[4] The city has been selected to be the host of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.[5]
Layout and landmarks
Sochi is almost unique among larger Russian cities as having some aspects of a subtropical resort. Apart from the scenic Caucasus Mountains, pebbly and sand beaches, the city attracts vacation-goers with its subtropical vegetation, numerous parks, monuments, and extravagant Stalinist architecture. About two million people visit Greater Sochi each summer,[13] when the city is home to the annual film festival Kinotavr and a getaway for Russia's elite.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 2,957 square kilometres (731,000 acres) Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, lies just north from the city.[14] Sochi also has Europe's most northerly tea plantations. It is served by the Adler-Sochi International Airport. The Sochi Light Metro is under construction, projected to be complete by 2014.
Sotschi
