Gay activists in Sochi predict althletes will speak out about Russian law
GAY ACTIVISTS IN SOCHI PREDICT ATHLETES WILL SPEAK OUT ON RUSSIAN LAW
Gay rights activists say they expect Olympic athletes to start speaking out against Russia's anti-gay propaganda laws as each individual competition draws to a close.
After meeting US and Australian athletes on Saturday, campaigners gathered at Sochi's largest gay club to talk to members of the local LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community.
The resort has long tolerated several discreet gay bars and clubs, and recent claims by the city's mayor that there are no homosexuals in the region have been met with widespread derision.
Inside Club Mayak (Lighthouse) the head of the US-based anti-discrimination campaign Athlete Ally said he was confident a number of competitors would make their views known in the coming fortnight.
I think most athletes that I've had the pleasure to talk to understand that this is an enormous opportunity, an enormous moment to make a statement for human rights,' Hudson Taylor said.
Gay Australian snowboarder Belle Brockhoff is a an ambassador for Athlete Ally, and the Australian bobsled team is also supporting the group's campaign for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to enforce Principle 6 of the Olympic charter.
Principle 6 enshrines the Olympic movement's opposition to all forms of discrimination.
Taylor was joined at the club by openly-gay former US Olympic diver David Pichler, who competed at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Games.
Pichler said LGBT athletes competing at the Games faced additional challenges dealing with discrimination and their own sexual identity.
No-one else has to deal with this - they don't have the sexuality issue, he said.
Pichler, who was the US team captain at the Sydney games, said the Olympics gave athletes a chance to speak up about discrimination, but he always advised athletes it was up to each individual to decide what was right.
You can't tell them how to behave. They need to decide how they want to behave by themselves, he said.
Pichler is an ambassador for US-based Human Rights First, which is meeting local activists campaigning against Russia's new anti-gay propaganda law.
Located in a nondescript building in central Sochi, Club Mayak ('Lighthouse') is drawing a steady stream of foreign tourists, reporters and workers from the Olympic sites.
While the presence of foreign activists caused a stir, most locals preferred to steer away from discussion about the anti-gay laws, and shy away from cameras.
Not so Andrei Ozerny, who decided to speak up when he saw the mayor claiming gays did not exist in this town.
Ozerny wrote the mayor a letter, that was subsequently published widely in Russia.

Members of Sochi gay community speak of their experiences ahead of Winter Games
For 29-year old Armen whose nickname is Branda Bond everything - looks, clothes - must be perfect.
Every month he spends around 10,000 rubles (300 US dollars) for cosmetics and dozens of thousands (hundreds of US dollars) of rubles for his performance costumes.
He started to take part in travesty show a year ago and this is his hobby.
He earns money in a gentleman's strip club in his hometown where he is the owner.
In my city I hide it (that am a travesty actor) because of people's views. For many this is immoral. There are some people who are connected with show business and artistic environment and for them this is normal, and I can share with them and ask for advice. But in general, people, of course, condemn it, he said.
He loves Sochi and Mayak club, one of the two gay clubs in Sochi, the southern Russian town that will host the Winter Olympics amid Vladimir Putin's harsh crackdown on gays.
Paradoxically, however, Sochi is a far cry from the conservative lifestyle that the president is trying to promote.
And the men behind Mayak are hopeful that Sochi can remain the exception to the rule as its entrepreneurial, anything-goes crowd prepares to welcome the world.
This is a resort town, said Andrei Tenichev, the owner.
We have a saying: Money doesn't smell of anything.
Tenichev moved to the south from the bustling boomtown of Moscow when he saw that Sochi desperately needed another gay hangout.
Opening Mayak, which means a lighthouse in Russian, was a no-brainer - money lying on the ground, he says - and even on a rainy Monday in September the club's cabaret show attracted at least 70 guests.
At Mayak, the dancers are as diverse as the city itself: a Muslim who is a former market butcher, an Armenian who owns a strip club in a nearby town, a Ukrainian who loves to sing like Whitney Houston and dress like Adele.
The club owner, who worked in a gay bar in Moscow before opening Mayak eight years ago, says the climate for his line of business is even better in Sochi.
In Moscow, some liquor brands refused to sell to the bar, saying: A gay bar isn't our style.
He expects tacit cooperation with the local government to last at least until through the Olympics in February.
The Russian Olympic Committee has not made any trouble for the club, he says, because they don't want the slightest scandal ahead of the February games.
But he also hopes that gay culture in Sochi has a better chance of surviving than in other parts of Russia, despite Putin's crackdown.
The city was a gay hub in Soviet times, a fact facilitated by the Soviet Union's closed borders, an easygoing southern temperament and, for many visitors, a healthy distance from family and friends back home - giving the place a What-happens-in-Sochi-stays-in-Sochi appeal.
In Soviet times Sochi was the most elite Soviet Union resort where all the ruling elite, intelligentsia (intellectuals) and all the rest people were coming. Here was the biggest gay centre in the Soviet Union. People were not able to travel abroad and that's why they were coming here, the only one resort, in Sochi, he said.
Homosexuality was a federal crime in Russia until 1993, but in Soviet times, cafe owners were tacitly glad to garner a reputation as a gay hangout: It brought extra cash flooding in, and a few extra bribes were enough to keep the police at bay.
The current morality campaign - centered on a law banning homosexual propaganda - has threatened to overshadow the games as it provokes an international outcry.
Transvestite performer, whose nickname is Zoya Shtanga, 28, thinks the law is controversial.
Sochi, however, isn't an escape for everyone.
Many gays who grew up here are chained to the same family and social pressures as in any other Russian provincial town.

Ozerny wrote the mayor a letter, that was subsequently published widely in Russia.
Nice to meet you, I'm one of them, Ozerny wrote.
Meeting Pichler and Taylor, Ozerny said his initial fear was overcome when he started to get messages of support from overseas.
Of course, the first comments were mainly negative, but also were some positive moments when people were writing to me saying: 'Thank you, you are so brave', he said.
For the Olympics, the club has invested in new costumes and doubled the number of performers in its famous drag show - a revue that would not look out of place anywhere in Europe.
Backstage, the cramped dressing room is the scene of frantic activity ahead of the show.
Forty-four year old performer Miss Zhuzha served a compulsory two years in the Soviet Army in East Germany as Andrei Sarkasian.
After 20 years performing in drag, she's excited by the new audience the Olympics has brought to Sochi.
I am very glad that people, sportsmen from many countries came to our wonderful city. I wish they are happy here she said.
As the performers took the stage, the 150-strong crowd joined in a rousing rendition of the Russian national anthem.
