DONIZETTI: Enrico di Borgogna - Trailer [Donizetti Opera 2018] World Première Recording
BUY/STREAM:
Enrico di Borgogna is a melodramma per musica that was premiered in Venice in 1818, marking Donizetti’s stage debut. The plot of this rare opera follows a rather traditional scheme: Enrico wants to defeat the son of the villain who usurped his father’s throne and is about to marry his beloved Elisa. Fortunately, he succeeds in stopping the marriage and regaining his inheritance.
This release is a world premiere video recording of the 2018 Donizetti Opera festival performance, which received great reviews for its brilliant staging.
Director Silvia Paoli uses a “theatre within the theatre” approach which gives way to moments of sheer humour and amusement: as the curtain opens, the public is brought back to the time of the opera premiere.
Played on period instruments by Academia Montis Regalis and conducted by repertoire specialist Alessandro De Marchi, this opera features two prima donnas like Sonia Ganassi and Anna Bonitatibus in the main roles.
“This was…a genuinely funny presentation, which had the audience laughing out loud. Everything was treated as a source of fun, from the narrative, and its mix of characters through the theatrical conventions of the time, even poking fun at the singers themselves. It was all staged in a blaze of color, fast-moving action, fabulous costumes and cleverly managed extraneous silliness.” (Operawire)
“[Anna Bonitatibus] displayed a burnished, deep timbre, sparkling coloratura and wonderful phrasing, confirming her status as the most interesting mezzo of her generation.” (Bachtrack.com)
“Sonia Ganassi…has a strong, dynamically versatile and flexible voice which she is able to manage intelligently and with skill.“ (Operawire)

DONIZETTI: Il Castello di Kenilworth - Trailer [Festival Donizetti 2018]
BUY/STREAM:
World première video recorded during the 2018 Donizetti Festival, 'Il Castello di Kenilworth' was first staged at Naples’ San Carlo in 1829. Based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott and adapted by librettist Leone Tottola, this rare opera has long been unjustly neglected. The recording features the original version of the score, with the role of Warney entrusted to a tenor (the composer changed the voice to baritone in his 1836 revision). 'Il Castello di Kenilworth' was followed by several other successful works that Donizetti similarly based on British history (Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena, Rosmonda d’Inghilterra, Emilia di Liverpool, Lucia di Lammermoor); it presents the character of Queen Elizabeth I, torn by the inner struggle between a monarch’s duty and a woman’s feelings. The fundamental pivot of the drama is the antagonism between the two female characters who both dwell and suffer in loneliness in a male-dominated world.
The performance received excellent reviews, praising the richness of the costumes, the sobriety of the stage setting, and above all the vocal and acting skills of the whole cast, which features first-rate singers such as star sopranos Jessica Pratt and Carmela Remigio, who share the stage with talented tenors Stefan Pop and emerging talent Xabier Anduaga.
“A first-class cast, with an imaginative production team, under the musical direction of Riccardo Frizza, have been assembled, and it is not an exaggeration to say that together they have produced a compelling case for “Il Castello di Kenilworth” to be given further consideration. […] It was musically engaging, full of bel canto charm, with some wonderful melodies, and notwithstanding its formulaic format, was dramatically convincingly. (Alan Neilson – Operawire)

Teatro Sociale / Best in Heritage
A new life for Bergamo’s Teatro Sociale - presentation of EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award 2014 laureate, by Nicola Berlucchi
DONIZETTI: Olivo e Pasquale [2016 Donizetti Festival, Bergamo] (world prémière)
The world premiere recording of Donizetti's sparkling opera buffa 'Olivo e Pasquale' is now available on CD, Blu-ray and DVD on Dynamic!
Filmed live at 2016 Donizetti Festival of Bergamo, has the part of Pasquale performed in the Neapolitan dialect. It is the story of two rich merchant brothers from Lisbon, Olivo and Pasquale, who
habitually weigh everything against its bargaining power. The
marriage of Olivo’s daughter and Pasquale’s niece Isabella is
also a “bargain” to them: she must marry another merchant,
so as not to break with family tradition. The gags between the
various characters are hilarious – especially those between
the two brothers, who have completely different characters
– creating an almost surreal atmosphere.
The show is very colourful, thanks to the rich sets and costumes. Olivo, performed by Bruno Taddia, is the real protagonist: as Isabella’s father, he portrays a gruff, inflexible man, and does so with self-assurance and ease, without going over the top. No less
convincing is Filipppo Morace as his brother Pasquale, histrionic
and exhilarating as an actor, musically precise and excellent in
his Neapolitan dialect performance. Laura Giordano, thanks
to her physique du rôle, is perfect as Isabella, the heartbroken
girl torn between love for the young Camillo and obedience
towards her grumpy father. This release is available in CD, DVD
and Blu-ray video formats.

The stories behind Venetian carnival masks
The Venice Carnival is underway with participants donning elaborate costumes and masks, evoking memories of Commedia Dell'Arte.
The characters of Pulcinella, Harlequin and Colombina all have stories to tell of a rich comic tradition that spread across Europe from Italy.
Revellers attending the Doge's Ball in Venice were greeted by a group of characters straight out of the Commedia Dell'Arte - a theatrical tradition stretching back for centuries in Italy and still kept alive in this watery city.
Commedia Dell'Arte is a form of improvisational theatre that first developed in the Italian city of Naples in the 16th century and spread throughout Europe, becoming popular in France and spreading to England and even Russia.
The Commedia Dell'Arte included a series of stock characters, including the famous Pulcinella (punch) - dressed in white, with a white cone hat and black mask with a large nose and belly, and hunched back.
There is also Harlequin - the silly servant dressed in white with diamond shaped decorations; and Colombina - the clever servant girl.
The stock characters are involved in a series of typical scenarios, usually involving a frustrated love story and a happy ending.
At the Doge's Ball, Pulcinella was joined by another stock Commedia Dell'Arte character, Il Capitan - a Spanish soldier full of bravado, eager to brag about his exploits, marching about with large, exaggerated steps.
Most of the guests probably recognised the popular figure of Harlequin with his trademark diamond designs on his white outfit.
An important aspect of the Commedia dell'Arte is the mask and there are few places in the world where masks are made with the same techniques used centuries ago.
Gualtiero Dall'Osto is known as a mascareri in Italian, a master mask maker who continues to make Commedia Dell'Arte masks at his workshop at the back of the Tragicomica mask store in Venice.
He explains the Harlequin figure is one of the zanni or the charlatans who make up the servants in Commedia Dell'Arte characters.
Harlequin is one of the so-called zanni (charlatan) that gets its origin from the name Giovanni, one of the oldest names, and he is a naf character, a farmer who comes from the Bergamo countryside who gets work in Venice as the servant of Pantalone who is a merchant, and the boss of Harlequin. Harlequin is a likeable, always in love and in search for his Colombina (a female Commedia dell'Arte character) and totally busy trying to satisfy his basic needs - mostly his hunger, so food to eat, and also love.
To make his masks, Dall'Osto studies historical documents and paintings - such as the Giambattista Tiepolo painting hanging in the Tragicomica shop.
Then he works with the face of the actor who will use the mask, making a drawing from each side and taking into consideration the shape of the actor's face.
The next step is to make a clay sculpture of the mask.
He then covers the clay sculpture with a plaster cast creating a negative shape. When the negative plaster shape is dry, he carefully pushes sheets of papier-mache' into the gaps to create the mask.
Once hardened, Dall'Osto takes the mask out of the plaster cast and then cuts out the eyes, the nose and around the borders before painting it the correct colour.
Different characters in Commedia Dell'Arte are assigned different colours. For example, Pulcinella always wears a black mask.
As a final step, the mask is given a wax polish.
Two popular female characters from the Commedia Dell'Arte - Smeraldina and Colombina - greeted guests at the door to the Doge's ball and spent the evening flitting about acting silly. Smeraldina is the foolish maid in the Commedia Dell'Arte and Colombina is the clever and comic servant girl.

Reflèsso - N!03 studio ennezerotre
Teatro Sociale, Bergamo, 23 September -- 23 October 2005
Interactive video environment comprised of three video installations created for the Bergamo Science Festival in 2005.
Identity and perception are at the basis of the research involved in Reflèsso: the idea we have of ourselves, our own reflected image and the one built up based on other people's image of us. How much are we ourselves and how much do others determine our identity?
These considerations were sparked by the novel by Pirandello One, no one, a hundred thousand revisited in a contemporary mode. The video installations toy with the logic and expectations of the audience by playing back a number of different images of their respective selves. ennezerotre.it
