Union Pacific 1989 at Soda Springs, CA
This video is part of the UP1989 Donner Pass Series. On July 31, 2010 I chased Union Pacific 1989 as it leads the ZCSLT. I was able to chase the train from Glenshire (Truckee) all the way to Roseville with stops like Emigrant Gap, Long Ravine, Newcastle, and a couple more. I was up there chasing this train with many other well know railfans like Steven Welch, Adam Pizante, Ryan Dadgari, Metal Mike, James Schlinger, James Davey and David Carballido Jeans. Check out any of there footage, and I hope you enjoy mine!
In this shot you see UP 1989 lead the ZCSLT under a signal bridge in Soda Springs, CA. You also here UP 1989 copy a warrant, which is a very commnon practice on Donner. Hope you enjoy!
I took many photos at this event and you can find them on many parts of the web. Here are a few links that will take you directly to the photos.

California: I-80E, Soda Springs (Exit 176) to Nevada State Border, I-80, 6/6/18
A drive on June 6, 2018 on Interstate 80 East from Exit 176 in Soda Springs to the State of Nevada border.
We drove along the California Trail as it crossed the Sierra Nevada mountains. Along this stretch of Donner Pass, we reached Donner Summit (0:52), which is at 7,227 feet in elevation. We then began our steep decent toward the State of Nevada. We passed through Truckee (4:31), which was very windy in areas (it can be seen at about 7:52 where my moving van swayed back and forth a few times). We then entered the Toiyabe National Forest (21:50), and passed through Floriston (23:33), before reaching the State of Nevada border.
I uploaded the video at normal speed; however, you can increase the speed by 1.25, 1.5 or 2 times by clicking on the button on the lower right-hand corner of the video. I didn't upload it at a faster speed because I have found that when viewing other persons' videos this way, the quality of the video is degraded when attempting to view the details at normal speed.
Enjoy!

A Nice Snowy Drive Along I-80 Eastbound Around Donner Pass (1-19-2019)
Having a nice snowy drive along I-80 eastbound in and around Donner Pass, passing thru Soda Springs. This part of the Sierras is around the Tahoe National Forest. This was during me & my cousin's spontaneous snow trip outing to Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, CA. We wanted to see snow & since the recent storms have dumped new snow up in the Sierras, we decided that it was a perfect time to head up to the mountains. Luckily, it wasn't snowing so we didn't need chains. Anyways, enjoy the video! Safe travels... (Outing taken place Saturday, January 19, 2019)
*Outing in summary:
We left San Jose at sunrise. The drive was around 3-4 hours. Once we finally reached our final destination at the Donner Memorial State Park (after stopping to refuel), the weather was not as cold as expected and we didn't have to use chains along the way on I-80. After we got lucky finding a parking spot, we stopped at the visitor center to warm up, use the restroom & buy the $5 parking permit. Then, we hiked around the park (along the creek) in knee-deep snow. It was quite a workout & the high elevation (thin air) was making it quite a challenge. After taking in the snowy scenes, we headed back to the car to eat lunch. After lunch, we decided to head to the lake (Donner Lake). It was quite of a walk/hike thru deep snow but we finally reached the lake shortly before 3 p.m. The lakeside views were just stunning with the wintry scenes all around. It made the long walk worth it, though we had to hike through the deepest snow we encountered just to get to the water's edge. Brrrr, it was also getting quite chilly at the time since it was late afternoon. Once we were satisfied with the snowy views, we headed back to the car. Our feet and legs were soaked! We then called it a day and tackled the long road trip back to reality. I wanted to be at least out of the mountains by nightfall. Yup, we had a nice and fun snow trip this day!

This picturesque riverfront cabin on the Yuba River has been lovingly cared for and offers a great setting in the mountains. Two stone patios and a stone bridge welcome you along with river views. The cabin has wood accents throughout, beautiful custom glasswork, a spa tub in the bathroom and a newer forced air and heating system. A swimming hole and sunbathing rocks are just below the property. The adjacent lot is also for sale, so you could buy both for extra space and privacy.
California Donner Summit Sno Park (snow play area for the kids)
Took the kids to the Donner Summit Sno-park right off of I-80 in Soda Springs, CA which is about a 2 to 3 hour drive from the East Bay Area. The place is very convenient to access right off the freeway however parking might be a little hassle depending on the time of day. I recommend buying a parking pass online at before going, to avoid trying to find a vendor when you arrive. The park itself is an excellent spot to take little kids for sledding, but be sure to bring your own sled or saucer since there won't be any for sale there. You only need to walk into the wooded area less than a 100 yards to find the best slopes for the kids! If you know of any other snow parks in the Sierra's that you like, please feel free to comment below. Thanks for watching!
