Live City Walking Tour from Sofia, Bulgaria + Weird Facts ????????
It's a lovely winter Sunday in the capital of Bulgaria! Check out this live tour of the city center after I went on the Free Sofia Walking Tour and learn some of the tips and facts I learned about this always growing, never aging city. There's also a yellow brick road (random).
Summary of Sofia:
-One of the oldest cities in Europe, founded over 6,000 years ago
-Named after a church (but not Saint Sofia, like many people think)
-The only European capital that's not on a river or port
-Bulgaria has some of the oldest vineyards in Europe and is also known for having the best rose oil in the world
-The only European capital with a significant mountain nearby where you can go skiing! - Vitosha Mountain
-Bulgaria is a democracy that joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007
-The Lion is a symbol of Bulgaria, although lions have never lived there. The currency, Lev, means lion in Bulgarian and you can find lions represented everywhere from Sofia's coat of arms to beer cans.
-Sofia and Bulgaria are famous for their thermal hot springs everywhere
-Sofia is built on levels - you can see ruins from the 4th century AD in the subway, next to 21st century construction
-It's one of the few European capitals that doesn't have an old town center
-Although the country is quite secular, in 1 square block you can find an Orthodox church, Catholic cathedral, Jewish synagogue and Islamic Mosque - also near a Russian Orthodox church.
-Sofia has lots of great bars, restaurants, and nightlife, as well as reasonably priced everything from food to luxury hotels
It's worth a visit!

An Eastern European Skate Movement | GREETINGS FROM SOFIA, BULGARIA
► Subscribe to the Red Bull Skateboarding on YouTube:
The skate scene in Sofia has developed and flourished in almost total isolation from outside awareness until relatively recently. Prior to 1989, Bulgaria lay behind the Iron Curtain, a postwar demarcation of Communist states collectively known as the Eastern Bloc.
Sofia has a magic to it as a city. It doesn't have endless spots, but it's a city so old that they can't dig down in it without finding yet another civilization. The winters are just brutal, but the opening of 5-High Skatepark on the fifth floor of a funky converted industrial unit means the locals can skate all year round for the first time.
Watch our zip around the skate scene of one of Europe’s last great undiscovered cities to experience what Sofia has to offer.

Bulgaria - The long revolution
They still resemble delicate fairies when they dance. Watching these ballet dancers, one cannot help but remember the days of Communism when Bulgaria's female track and field athletes swept the board in international competitions. The only difference is that today the girls in Sofia's dance school smile more often as they whirl through the air. Even the dancers' trainer is the same person as in the old days -- Neschka Robeva. No one knows if the state will be willing to pay for this institution much longer, she says. Robeva believes that anyone making long-term plans in Bulgaria today is either stupid or a hopeless optimist. She dislikes the general mentality that has descended on the population following the political upheaval: The nation has not understood that self-discipline is still the most important thing, even in the new system. Teachers like Robeva used to enjoy high social standing in Bulgaria. But today this only applies to people who make a lot of money.

Some 200 people gathered at Borisova Gradina Park in central Sofia, Sunday to push for the protection of a monument to the Soviet Army. The rally was part of a campaign organised by the 'Together with Russia' association for the defence of historical monuments and Russian culture. Participants carried signs bearing slogans such as 'keep the memory alive' and 'Bulgaria supports Russian politics.'
The gathering was attended by representatives of over 45 countries who waved their national flags and placed flowers at the foot of the Red Army monument, built in 1954. The event takes place every year and has become a tradition for those who wish to honour Russian culture and history.

Bulgaria 24 May 1982
Transferred from 16 mm film. All rights to use acquired.
Carefully rehearsed and meticulously orchestrated, the parades in front of the embalmed body of the ex-Communist leader Georgi Dimitrov were also an indicator of the place in the hierarchy of each member of the party nomenclatura. While teachers, pupils and students waved obediently at Number One and his lieutenants, others were trying to spot who was in and who was out on the tribune.
There were several of these parades each year, all the way to the end 1989. Even the day dedicated to letters and culture was no exception from the military discipline of marching past Sofia's Mausoleum.

SOFIA PRIDE 2019 / София Прайд 2019 - Bulgaria (commandant edition)
????????????️????Sofia Pride Parade is a peaceful march of LGBT+ people and their relatives and friends, which combines social and political protest with entertaining elements. It takes place every year in the month of June in Bulgaria's capital Sofia since 2008. The first Sofia Pride parade was held on June 28, 2008,on the same date as the Stonewall riots in New York City that occurred in 1969. Same-sex sexual activity became legal on May 1, 1968. Between 1968 and the collapse of communism in 1989, the country was ruled by a dictator, citizens were not free and therefore no gay movements or places of social gatherings existed. After democracy was reestablished in 1990, several gay bars and clubs opened doors in the capital of Sofia as well as in Varna and Plovdiv.
In 1969, the NYPD had a public morals squad. Those officers are the ones who raided the Stonewall Inn. At that time, raids at gay bars were common across the country -- but that all changed when hundreds of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people joined together in protest, launching a fight for civil rights that continues half a century later.
Today ( June 28th 2019) marks 50 years since the start of riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, where a police raid led to backlash that fueled the modern-day gay rights movement.

Retro Sofia
The Old town of Sofia - the capital of the Bulgarian Kingdom, known also as Second Wien, a peaceful little town, known with its high level-cultural and industrial progress, and one of the highest standarts of living before the Second World War and the soviet occupation. The most of the center is destroyed by the american attacks in 1944, and rebuilt by the communists, although hopefully it s possible to see some of those buildings in the city center today.

1-2 February 1945
Ludmila Dimitrova Doytchinova,
Sofia, Easter 2008
On 2 February 1945, only months after the Communist takeover in Bulgaria, more than 90 people were executed and buried in an unmarked mass grave at Sofia's cemetery. Among them were public officials, three regents, all members of the last National Assembly, scientists, distinguished army officers. One of them was General Mihov. His niece Milka Doychinova remembers.
Bulgaria - Funeral of Todor Zhivkov - 1998
T/I: 10:42:02
Thousands of Bulgarians on Sunday (9/8) gathered in Sofia's main square to pay final homage to Todor Zhivkov, Bulgaria's last Communist dictator. He died on Wednesday, aged 86. Zhivkov ruled the country as a staunchly Communist satellite of Moscow for 35 years. He provoked a mixture of hatred and nostalgia among his countrymen. The present anti-communist coalition government, in office since April 1997, refused to accord him a state funeral.

Welcome to Sofia, Bulgaria: The Moderately Priced Hotel Budapest
The Explore tour of Ancient Macedonia would begin in Sofia, Bulgaria with one night at Hotel Budapest. Marine Steve and I booked an extra night and arrived a day before the tour actually began.
Hotel Budapest rates made me apprehensive. How good could a hotel be that had a $68 rate for double room, en suite facilities, buffet breakfast, service and taxes? Rather than looking for another hotel, we just went with the flow. Surprise, surprise, surprise! Breakfast was huge; Hotel Budapest had contemporary decor, free Wi-Fi, clean rooms and a 15 minute walk to all of Sofia's important sights.
Оркестърът на София / The Sofia’s Orchestra
screen: Hellia Chavdarova, director: Rossen Elezov, cameraman: Cvetan Nedkov
The film is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the emblematic band Sofia Orchestra and the atmosphere in the 60s and 70s of the last century. It’s about the pioneers and significant figures of the Bulgarian pop, rock and jazz and music as a mirror of the Cold War era. For the deadly taboos and the smell of freedom under the communist regime. About the personal drama of the survivors from the band in the big plane crash in 1971. About the great hopes and belief in music.
