PS20 Solucar's Solar Tower
PS20 solar power tower is a solar thermal energy plant in Sanlucar la Mayor near Seville, in Andalusia, Spain. It is the world's most powerful solar power tower. The 20 megawatt solar power tower produces electricity with large movable mirrors called heliostats.

Solar energy: Europe's first commercial solar plant
Europe's first commercial solar plant, situated in Sanlucar la Mayor, 25 km west of Seville, was inaugurated in March 2008.
The 11 MW plant, known as PS10, is the first tower technology solar thermoelectric power plant used for commercial purposes in the world and generates electricity to power 6,000 homes. 624 heliostats, or movable mirrors, concentrate solar radiation onto a receiver located on a 115 m high tower. Water is turned into steam which is then blasted into turbines to generate power.
The PS10 plant is part of the Sanlucar la Mayor Solar Platform which, when completed in 2013, will provide enough energy to power some 180,000 homes, or a city the size of Seville.

Andalusia has great abundance of sunlight, that is an enormous source of energy. With this new technology we have found our own oil field that will be able to provide energy to the whole of Spain. We cannot export the sunlight but we can export the energy it generates. Energy that we will share with the rest of Spain.

LEAD IN:
Europe's first commercial solar power plant has been officially inaugurated in Spain.
The plant, known as PS10 is located on the outskirts of the Spanish city of Sanlucar la Mayor, 25 kilometres (16 miles) west of the city of Seville.
It has a capacity of 11 megawatts (MW) and generates electricity for six thousand homes in the area.
STORYLINE:
In the region of Andalusia in southern Spain the sun shines almost without interruption.
In 2004 Solucar, a branch of Abengoa Energy, began the construction of the PS10 plant.
Costing 35 million Euros (US$45 million) the plant was designed to produce enough electricity for a medium-size town.
A 115 metre (377 feet) high power tower is surrounded by a field of 624 heliostats or mirrors.
Chief technician of Solucar, Jose Antonio Antunez explains that their commodity is the sun.
The sun's rays hit the mirrors which reflect radiation towards a receptor located at the top of the tower. The water in circulation through the tower heats up and turns into steam.
The steam operates a giant turbine located at the base of the tower. It is then is cooled and condensed so most of the water can be used again to generate more energy.
In a few years PS10 will integrate a grid of several plants in the area that will generate 302MW of electricity.
Director of Solucar, Pedro Jimenez says the plant currently has a capacity of 11 MW and will provide energy for the equivalent of six thousand homes.
He adds that when the whole complex is finished it will have a capacity of 302MW. This translates as electricity for 180,000 homes, the equivalent of the population of Seville.
The mayor of Sanlucar la Mayor, Juan Escamez Luque says the plant has the potential to generate energy for the whole of Spain.

------
Abengoa and its partners, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and the Community Trust, today officially inaugurated XiNa Solar One, the third solar thermal plant in South Africa developed by Abengoa. The plant, which has been operating for more than nine months at full load required an investment of R9.459-million for its construction.
XiNa Solar One, with a capacity of 100 MW, provides clean, sustainable and dispatchable electrical energy to 95 000 South African households, especially in peak hours, thanks to its 5½ hours storage system. The power plant provides renewable energy to a country that is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
