Solidarity Poland 1981
The begining of the Polish Solidarity movement founded in September 1980 at the Gdansk shipyard and led by Lech Walesa.
Solidarity was the first non-communist party-controlled trade union in a Warsaw Pact country. In the 1980s it constituted a broad anti-bureaucratic social movement. The government attempted to destroy the union during the period of martial law in the early 1980s and several years of political repression, but in the end it was forced to start negotiating with the union.
10 Things to do in Gdańsk, Poland Travel Guide
Join us as we visit Gdańsk, Poland in this travel guide exploring the top attractions and best things to do in Gdansk (Danzig). As the final and northernmost destination we visit during our time in Poland this port city is one of the coolest places we've visited on this particular trip through Europe. From cobbled streets to posh museums to river cruises you'll find something for everyone here. One thing we noticed was that it was considerably more expensive in terms of accommodations and food compared with other Polish cities we've visited; however, it has charms that more than make up for it.

10 Things to do in Gdańsk, Poland Travel Guide script:
After visiting the Basilica, we walked over to the main pedestrian street in Gdansk: Dluga, also known as Long Street. Unlike most Polish cities, Gdansk doesn’t have a main square, but this stretch of road acts as the equivalent with lots of vendors and performers along the way.
On the west end of Dluga (Dooga) we came across the Amber Museum, which sounded a little unusual, so we bought tickets and went up. Here we learned the history of Amber trade in the Baltic, and we also discovered that the tower that now houses the museum, was once a prison and torture chamber.
Not done with museums just yet, our next stop was the Historical Museum of the City of Gdansk. I think we spent more time staring at the ornate doorways, ceilings and staircases, than we did at the exhibit itself!
Here, we also saw the Medieval Crane, which was first mentioned in texts in 1367, and was at one point the biggest working crane in the world.
Next, it was all aboard the SS Sołdek, a Polish coal and ore freighter which is now a ship-museum.
And since we’re on the topic of food, we need to show you a milk bar we really enjoyed.
On our last day in Gdansk, we walked over to the European Solidarity Centre, which is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Old Town. The museum tells the story of Solidarity, a Polish trade union and civil resistance movement, founded in 1980 at the Lenin Shipyard. This was the first union not controlled by the communist party, and it’s a fascinating museum to learn a bit more about the history.
And that’s a wrap for our Gdansk travel guide. We hope you guys enjoyed this video and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Gdansk on you visit. You know the drill, if you have any other tips or suggestions to share with travellers, feel free to pop those in the comments section below. Happy travels and until next time!

#gdansk #poland #solidarność

Crowds show support for Lech Walesa in Gdansk hometown
Crowds of people have gathered in Gdansk, the cradle of Poland's 1980s solidarity movement, to show their support for Lech Walesa.
The former democracy leader and ex-president is facing renewed allegations of having collaborated with the country's communist-era secret police.

Puxiao and Sung visit Gdansk and Krakow, Poland in the Summer of 2013
Puxiao and Sung Visited Gdansk Shipyard, the birth place of the Polish Solidarity Movement in 1980s. After spending a day in Gdansk, they went to see The Wieliczka Salt Mine at Krakow area. The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines still in operation.

Kate and William meet ex Polish president Lech Walesa on Poland tour
Kate and William meet ex-Polish president Lech Walesa on Poland tour
THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met former Solidarity co-founder and ex-Polish president Lech Walesa in Gdansk today.
William and Kate met him when they toured a museum created to commemorate the struggle of Solidarity, the first independent trade union in a Soviet bloc country.
The European Solidarity Centre, a museum and library beside the Gdansk Shipyard, is filled with iconic images from the struggle during the 1980s.
William and Kate followed the example of thousand of visitors to the museum by writing brief messages of support on tiny pieces of paper that joined others to make a giant red and white Solidarity mural.
Outside the building Kate laid a single white rose and William a red rose at the base of the towering Monument to the fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970, which commemorates 42 people killed by the communist authorities during food riots in cities along the Baltic coast.
Mr Walesa, 73, and his colleagues helped bring about the fall of communism in Poland by leading workers at the shipyard out on strikes against the authorities, eventually turning Solidarity into a non-violent anti-communist movement with 10 million members that ultimately forced free elections in Poland.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as Polish president from 1990 to 1995 but in recent years he has become a controversial figure amid claims he acted as a secret police informant in the 1970s.
He has denied the claims despite a welter of evidence offered.
Think diffrent. Solidarnosc (Solidarity) thought.
Heres to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. Theyre not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you cant do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
In 1980 People of Poland thought diffrent.

European Solidarity Centre ADOC
The land plot where this building will be erected is strategically located in the northern end of the Solidarity Square, where the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers stands, near Gate N2 and the BHP Hall.
The ESC Building seeks to share the end of the Promenade Roads to Freedom with the Square.
Touching the ground with its body and soul, the building takes into its lap all passers by within the city. Among the pillars of which we are both parents and children, we feel the surroundings of the new plaza that invades us and protects itself below us.
The light directed from the building towards the centre of the internal square defines an invisible mass that qualifies the space and diminishes the weight of the physical space. That matter also builds its inside and defines limits between what the eyes see and what the body feels, penetrating in all its surroundings.
An assumed victim of the chisel, the building is cut and defined by light, letting it flow through its empty spaces and answer functional logics of a more humane reality and more attentive to mortal demands, making this architecture more tangible and inhabitable.
