What's in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland?
Have you ever been around all the towns and cities of Northern Ireland? There are lots of things to discover in every single town and every city out there, just adopt the investigator personality and follow all the trails that would lead you to something interesting and exciting to see.
Banbridge is one of those places in county Down, Northern Ireland, which one could visit and check what it has. Banbridge is a town in county Down that lies on River Bann and the A1 Road. The name of this small town was taken from a bridge that was built over River Bann back in 1712.
At the beginning of time, Banbridge was famously used as a coaching stop on the road for those travelling from Belfast to Dublin. Back in time, this small town thrived from the manufacturing of the Irish linen. Banbridge town is now the headquarters for Banbridge District Council.
Whenever it comes to a town or city in a country and knowing more about the history that they might carry, it seems interesting to listen to some of the unusual stories. In the case of Banbridge town, mentioning the main street is important since it was an unusual one because it rises to a steep heel before leveling out, even back in the 1800's an underpass was built to give the horses carrying heavy loads the chance to reach their destination without fainting before reaching the top; this bridge was named Downshire bridge although it was always being referred to as the cut.
Like any other place in the world, there are also some places to visit and things to do in Banbridge, county Down, even if it will end up being a small town that could be all rotated in a small period of time. Since the beginning of this town happened through the excellence in the linen world then visiting something related to this area will be a must when it comes to Banbridge, such as going to Fergusons Irish Linen Factory or passing by Linen Hill.
Of course people will be excited to look back in history and see the underpass that was built in the past but which is now used as a passage for cars, but there are also some places which one should be willing to visit and which include Mount Ida Pottery, Solitude Park, Arts in the Garden, Dromore Cathedral (Church of Ireland), Donaghmore High Cross, Loughbrickland Park, as well as the walking across the streets of the town and some of the other places that you could be exploring by yourself, which could be also about the restaurants, cafes and bars.
Banbridge town in county Down has its notable people who are famously known across the country and who happen to be from this town - some visitors tend to love the place more when they come to know that one of their favorite famous characters happen to be from this small town they are visiting. From those famous characters who come from this town, there are the Bronte sisters who are now famous for their books, John Butler Yeats who is an artist and father of four artistic kids, Cyril Scott and Arthur Cox who are both actors, as well as Joseph M. Scriven who is the writer of the poem which became the hymn What a Friend We Have in Jesus.
Since Banbridge is a town in county Down then we have to refer to those other towns and villages which we have been to before and which are all located in county Down as well. We have been to Portaferry ( we visited Donaghadee ( we have also been to Rostrevor before ( Newcastle in county Down was one of the places we have been to as well ( and these of course come in addition to the touristic destinations which we might visit in every single place of these, such as Scrabo Tower in Newtownards ( and Mount Stewart House and Garden in the same place (
Northern Ireland is filled with lots of places that one could visit and enjoy the beauty of nature or the magnificence of history. Being to Banbridge was one of the trips we planned to experience this small town that has started its way through the linen industry and also check this town which was built by Bann River and thus got its name from it and from the bridge that was built for people to cross it.
Have you ever been to Banbridge before? Do you know what's in this small town? You should then! If you have the time to visit this small town in county Down then try to pass by it, it is not far away from Belfast and could provide you with a different experience.
Banbridge, the home to the Star of the County Down was the town we stopped at during this trip to know more about its history and the different places which we could visit in it and know more about what it could offer; you should make a plan!

Clough roundabout, 'Way to the Fair' Sculpture Darren Sutton
I do not usually like or appreciate most sculpture but this example sitting in the middle of Clough roundabout makes me smile every time I approach it. I think it is so expressive of cow and farmer interaction in real life. In this stainless steel produced sculpture called 'Way to the Fair', the 'ole cow seems to know that it is being sold off and it is clearly not happy.
Sculpture (John) Darren Sutton was born in Dungannon, Co Tyrone in 1972. Since graduating from Stafford College, England, he has spent 16 years producing public art in Scotland, England, Portugal and latterly Ireland. These works include sculptures, murals and other commissioned works of art.
His sculptured work is cast in specialist cement as well as resin, aluminum and bronze. Works are also created using brick, steel and wood.
In 2003 he was employed by the world famous Royal Worcester Porcelain. There he assisted members of the public in designing, decorating and producing porcelain products within the complex.
In 2006 Darren returned home to Dungannon where he was commissioned to work on Re-imaging projects in Belfast and Dungannon. Darren was also commissioned to produce major sculptures in Banbridge, County Down.
In 2010 he began work in Belfast for HBO film and television company. There he produced a number of panels and three-dimensional works for a new TV series.
Darren has had the opportunity to refine and enhance his unique talent by working on numerous public artworks in England for over 15 years, but his most recent works have been created back home in Northern Ireland. In the past five years his works have been commissioned by various local council authorities.
Solitude Park in Banbridge holds the stunning 21ft, stainless steel “Flax Flowers” sculpture. Not only is this work unique in size and stature, it brings a positive, social ambience to the onlooker and an eye-catching focal point to the park.
At the opposite end of Banbridge town, Darren was commissioned to produce the “Family Entering the Workhouse” piece. This bronze sculpture is a life-size work depicting a family being separated at the gate of the workhouse in days gone by. Contrary to the subject matter this sculpture brings an uplifting, tangible presence to the area, and is situated on an elevated site where the original workhouse stood.

N. IRELAND: CAR BOMB EXPLODES IN PROTESTANT TOWN OF BANBRIDGE
English/Nat
A car bomb exploded in a predominantly Protestant town in Northern Ireland on Saturday.
The blast injured six people and damaged shops in central Banbridge, 22 miles (35 kilometres) southwest of Belfast.
A warning was issued but although police frantically tried to complete evacuations, the central street was still full of people when the bomb exploded and panic ensued.
No one has yet claimed responsbility for the attack.
Shop windows shattered as a car bomb exploded in this mostly Protestant town of Banbridge in Northern Ireland.
Six people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but amazingly, no one was seriously injured or killed.
Buildings in the street that had been bustling with shoppers not long before the blast suffered extensive damage.
No one has yet claimed responsibility, but police said there had been a warning and the area was being cleared when the device exploded outside a shoe store.
The blast damaged shops up and down Newry Street, and a number of
people were treated for shock.
Irish Republican Army dissidents opposed to the group's ceasefire, operating as the Continuity I-R-A or real I-R-A, have carried out several bombings in recent months.
Saturday's bombing was a stark reminder of the political violence that the historic Good Friday peace agreement reached in April sought to quell in the British province.
The bombing also came the same day that the Irish government released six I-R-A prisoners from a top security prison under provisions in the peace agreement.
Mervyn Carrick, a loyalist politician and member of the new Northern Ireland assembly, suspects it was the work of Republican sympathisers who oppose the peace deal.
He said if his suspicions prove true, it would be irrelevant which faction the bombers belong to since all that mattered was their intent to maim or kill.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well, I'm absolutely disgusted that on a very pleasant Saturday afternoon, at the height of the shopping season and the shopping day, at half past four, that those who placed this bomb should come in with reckless abandonment and had absolutely no thought for the safety of the shopping public in Banbridge. It's by the grace of God that there have been no fatalities and I understand those who have been injured are just minor injuries, but at this early stage, I am not sure. (Q. Who do you think is responsible?) This has got all the hallmarks of an Irish Republican bomb. And I know great play will be made of whether it is a fringe group or a splinter group. That matters not to the people of Banbridge. It is an Irish Republican bomb. They are all of the one family and it ill behooves Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein I-R-A to disassociate themselves from it. No doubt they'll refuse to condemn it but there will be a play on words. But this doesn't fool the people of Banbridge this evening. The Irish Republicans have come in and have decided to try and blow the heart out of the commercial life of Banbridge.

A visibly shaken police chief told reporters he thought Banbridge was extremely lucky not to have suffered any serious casualties or fatalities.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The people who carried out this only were following one agenda - death and destruction. And I would take this opportunity to praise the security forces - for if it hadn't been for their outstanding action, I have little doubt that would have had death here today. They were still clearing the scene in actual fact when the bomb went off.
SUPER CAPTION: William McCreesh, Deputy Assistant Chief Constable of County Down
SOUNDBITE: (English)
No one claimed responsibility for the attack.
