Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide
Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide
Papua New Guinea is an island nation in Oceania. A country of immense cultural and biological diversity, it’s known for its beaches and coral reefs. Inland are active volcanoes, granite Mt. Wilhelm, dense rain forest and hiking routes like the Kokoda Trail. There are also traditional tribal villages, many with their own languages.
Papua New Guinea is just to the south of the equator and has a tropical climate. In the highlands, though, temperatures are distinctly cool. The (very) wet season runs from about December to March. The best months for trekking are June to September.

Honiara, on the island of Guadalcanal, is the capital city of the Solomon Islands. Its buzzing Central Market sells local produce and handicrafts. Traditional frescoes adorn the conical National Parliament building. The National Museum has WWII relics and cultural artifacts. The Botanical Gardens includes an orchid house. Outside the city, the waters of the Mataniko Falls thunder down a rocky cliff into a canyon.
The American War Memorial has descriptions on marble slabs of local battles fought during the Guadalcanal Campaign of WWII. Built by Japanese veterans, the Solomons Peace Memorial Park commemorates those who died. West of the city, Vilu War Museum has memorials and WWII aircraft. Nearby, Bonegi Beach, with 2 sunken wartime vessels, is a popular site for diving and snorkeling. East, Bloody Ridge is a hill defended by U.S. troops against the Japanese in 1942. It has a small, pyramid-shaped U.S. memorial. With views over the area, nearby Mount Austen was a strategic WWII site.
Port Moresby is the sprawling capital of Papua New Guinea, a country north of Australia. The vast anthropological collection at the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery includes masks and carved wooden poles. Nearby, Parliament House is modeled on a traditional house of worship. Its entrance is dominated by a large, colorful mosaic featuring national motifs. There are views over Port Moresby Harbour from Paga Hill.
Nearby traditional villages include Koki, built on stilts in a bay. To the north, Port Moresby Nature Park combines botanical gardens, featuring many orchids, with a zoo housing tree kangaroos, parrots and reptiles. The Bomana War Cemetery holds the graves of many Papua New Guinean, Australian and other soldiers who died during WWII. Hikers are drawn to Varirata National Park in the east, with its resident wallabies and birds of paradise. Nearby, the town of Sogeri is at one end of the long, mountainous Kokoda Track, which passes through dense rainforest. Diving is popular on coral reefs off the coast.

Freediving Airplane Wreck | B17 Bomber, Solomon Islands
Freediving the WWII B17 Flying Fortress Airplane Wreck off the Island of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. The plane is a 45 minute drive out of Honiara, accessible from the shore near Vilu village, about 75m from the beach. The wreck sits in 13 to 20m of water, making it a good site for freedivers and scuba divers.
The visibility wasn't the best the day we dived, and couldn't see the plane from the surface so it's best to dive it with someone who has been there before.
This is one of a number of wrecks located just off the beaches of Guadacanal, so stay tuned for more freediving videos from the Solomon Islands
Also known as 'Bessy the Jap Basher', the aircraft was participating in a bombing raid in the western part of the Solomon Islands. The Bomber was damaged by Japanese planes, but managed to drop her bombs on a Japanese ship before heading back to Guadalcanal. She was last seen descending in the sea near the village of Vilu.
It is believed that at least the pilot and a gunner survived the crash, after which their fate is unclear other than remains were discovered in 1944 so they might have been captured by Japanese forces. In January 1944 the US Navy Seabees salvaged the rear fuselage and tail section, so this site today includes the main wings and cockpit area.

William & Kate - The Royal Couple South Seas Tour 2012 Part 3 HD
As part of the Diamond Jubilee, Prince William and Duchess Catherine (Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) embarked on a tour of Singapore, Malaysia, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.
Mary Nightingale travelled with the Royal Couple as they carried out the Asia-Pacific leg of the Diamond Jubilee tour and reflected on a very modern couple.
In this Part, we see the Duke and Duchess perform their royal duties with steely determination against the backdrop of controversy over the publication of topless photos of the Duchess by a French magazine. Celebrity and actress Michelle Yeoh gives her views on privacy and the controversy.
The Royal Couple heads to Sabah, part of Borneo. The Royal Couple are deeply interested in conservation issues and visits the Danum Vally Field Centre. Prince William is a fellow of The Royal Society, which is funding research into the impact of deforestation.
The Royal Couple then proceeds on to the Solomon Islands and are warmly welcomed in the capital of Honiara. The Solomon Islands is a member of the Commonwealth and this is the first visit by a member of the British Royal Family since gaining independence. Queen Elizabeth last visited the Solomon Islands in 1974. Prince William even enjoys a kick about with local young children.
We see insights from the Royal Photographer Arthur Edwards and Tim Ewart, an ITV News Royal Correspondent.

STORYLINE:
An Italian gossip magazine owned by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi published a 26-page spread of topless photos of Prince William's wife Kate on Monday - despite legal action against the French magazine that published them first.
Chi hit newsstands on Monday, featuring a montage of photos taken while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on holiday at a relative's chateau in the south of France last month.
The images were taken with a long lens from hundreds of metres (yards) away.
They included the 14 pictures published by the popular French magazine Closer, which like Chi is owned by Berlusconi's Mondadori publishing house.
Maurizio Bellacosa, a criminal defence lawyer in Rome, told the Associated Press that Italian authorities have recently made a fundamental distinction between two kinds of privacy.
On one side, (there are) pictures that everybody can publish because they represent public people in public places like an airport, a beach or a boat, he said.
On the other side, there are pictures that represent a real intrusion in private life - such as when photos are taken from outside the private property and represent very intimate moment of private life.
The editor of Chi magazine - Alfonso Signorini - has written an editorial defending his decision to publish topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge.
According to Bellacosa, the editor pointed out that these pictures are very common and they were taken on a balcony not so far from a public road.
Is that true? he added.
The royal couple, meanwhile, continued their tour of the South Pacific - arriving in the Solomon Islands on Sunday - part of a tour of Singapore, Malaysia and the South Pacific.
A spokeswoman for William said the couple's lawyers would file a complaint with French prosecutors on Monday against the unidentified photographer or photographers involved.
