From its Imperial origins, the Winter Palace and Hermitage Museum has distinguished itself as one of the finest museums of the world. Contrasting historical paintings, postcards, and photos with their modern contemporaries, the Winter Palace and State Hermitage Museum come alive in breathtaking detail. Leuchtenberg, The Large Study of Grand Princess Maria Nikolayevna, The Boudoir of Grand Princess Maria Alexandrovna, The Military Library of Emperor Alexander II, The Bedchamber of Empress Maria Alexandrovna, The Study of Emperor Alexander II, The Study of Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna, and The White Drawing-Room of Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna.

Moscow museum gathers all Russia's Jordaens works
(18 Sep 2019) LEAD IN:
Moscow's Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is drawing together all works by Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens that are owned by Russian museums.
Jordaens was one of the most prominent painters of the Flemish school, alongside Rubens and van Dyck.
STORY-LINE:
Russian Jordaens is an exhibit of all the painters' works owned by Russian museums.
Earlier this year, 18 paintings were first shown to the public at The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
Now, 18 paintings and 31 drawings have arrived in Moscow.
Our task was to show - using eloquent and characteristic exemplars - the artistic evolution of this wonderful Flemish painter. And to show all his masterpieces, including paintings and drawings, owned by Russian museums, explains curator Vadim Sadkov.
For the first time since 1794, Jordaens' The Lamentation has left St. Petersburg, where it hangs at Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
It was Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, who purchased Jordaens' monumental The Lamentation from a Berlin collection.
She later donated it to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.
It was always thought that the painting was by Flemish master Rubens, but several years ago, Dutch art historian Arnout Balis identified that was in fact by Jordaens.
The works of Flemish artists such as Jordaens were heavily influenced by Rubens.
Many painters trained at the master's studio, including young Anthony van Dyck, who went on to become one of Flemish Baroque's greatest.
It's not the only recent discovery at the exhibit.
During the restoration process of Christ and the Samaritan Woman, specialists were able to find the signature of Jordaens' son, also called Jacob.
In the process of restoration, a signature of the son of Jordaens was discovered, says Vadim Sadkov.
His name is also Jacob, but he is Junior. And it is written there - Jacob Jordaens Junior. And this painting is yet the only one valid work of the son. And this painting belongs to the museum in Nizhny Novgorod and is now shown here.
Meleager and Atalanta was always considered to be a copy of a Jordaens paintings, but - again during the restoration process - specialists discovered the painter's signature.
Jordaens was born in Antwerp, Belgium in in 1593.
He was a student of Adam van Noort, a Belgium painter, who also taught Rubens.
Jordaens is famous for painting religious stories, metaphors on life and people of his time, as well as collaborating with artists such as Andries Daniels and Paul De Vos.
These are the scenes from the Old Testament, allegoric portraits, portraits commissioned by burghers of Antwerpen, as well as his collaborations with other artists, including still life painters, says Sadkov.
These paintings show the history of Russian art collection.
Empress Catherine the Great began buying Flemish artists for her palaces.
Although, she was not the only one interested in the Dutch masters. Russian aristocrats followed her example and started to collect paintings of Flemish masters, including Jordaens.
Odysseus and Polyphemus, a painting from a collection of Rubens, was brought to Russia in the 18th century and was in hands of a nobel family of Musin-Pushkin, then belonged to a Hermitage curator Osip Braz.
After Braz was sent to a Soviet prison camp, the state confiscated his collection.
Today, it's in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts' collection.

In the Pavilion Hall (Small Hermitage) of the Hermitage Museum (Winter Palace) in St. Petersburg, Russia is the Peacock Clock. This animated clock was created by British jeweler, James Cox. Grigory Potemkin, one of Catherine II's lovers, wanted to give her a gift that would appeal to her avid passion for collecting. This is a video of the video which plays beside the exhibit. The clock plays each Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. The magic of the peacock clock is one of the most popular pieces with the tourists.
Faberge Museum St Petersburg Russia Virtual Tour
Faberge Museum St Petersburg Russia Virtual Tour: See the largest collection of Faberge Eggs as well as other Carl Fabergé. If you can't visit the Faberge Museum in St Petersburg, then this virtual tour is the next best thing.
The Link of Times collection is made up of 4,000 works of decorative and fine arts, including works of gold and silver, paintings, porcelain, and bronze works.
The collection, which has evolved over the course of a decade and continues to grow, is being presented to the public for the first time in the magnificent Shuvalov Palace in St. Petersburg, which was restored by the Link of Times.
Malcom Forbes: The core of the exhibition is the work of the famous Russian jeweler Carl Fabergé (1846-1920), the court jeweler to the Russian Tsars. These works were purchased in early 2004 from the heirs of the American newspaper magnate Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), who collected the Tsarist jewels for half a century. Thus, the famous Forbes collection was saved from being divided (items from the Forbes collection were first planned to be sold at an auction) and, in essence, from complete liquidation. The jewelry masterpieces, some of which were sold by the Bolsheviks in the 1920s-1930s, were brought back to Russia, thus marking the beginning of repatriation of Russia’s national artistic heritage. This collection is without a doubt one of the best in the world in terms of its size, its diversity, and the quality of its works, many of which belonged to the Russian royal family and members of other royal courts of Europe.
Obtaining the collection from Forbes marked a significant event in the history of Russian culture. As for the creation of Russia's first privately-owned museum of national importance, this was only the beginning. The Link of Times foundation became one of the key players on the secondary art market. For 10 years purchased the works of Carl Fabergé and other significant Russian jewelers from the 16th-20th centuries at the world's top auction houses: Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Bonhams, Phillips, Bukowskis, Dorotheum, etc. The foundation followed news of the Russian jeweler's masterpieces in Europe, North and South America, and Asia.
“In the span of 10 years, we published announcements in every high-profile journal and worked with a wide variety of auction houses and experts. Finally, everything was returned to its homeland, where these masterpieces were created. We're proud of this fact and think that we've done a great job collecting not a great collection, but the world's very best collection of Fabergé works.” Apart from the largest and most representative collection of works by Fabergé, the foundation has managed to collect a one-of-a-kind collection of Russian enamel, consisting of over 100 items made by the artists Fyodor Rückert—an unprecedented number for one collection. The remarkable collection of the Tsars' gold cutlery boxes, made in St. Petersburg and abroad for the Petersburg Court, also deserves special attention. Among these boxes are enamel decorated miniatures featuring portraits of almost all of the Romanov emperors and unique exhibits with miniature-mosaic plaquettes on the lids.
The Link of Times' collection is presently on display in the staterooms of the Shuvalov Palace. The Museum's exhibitions use modern design techniques; they have been designed specifically for the Museum. The boundaries between onlookers and the works of art practically disappear thanks to the spacious and, at first glance, seemingly invisible display cases, and the artificial light transforms these works of art into multimedia objects.

UK Lends Russia Ancient Statue: British Museum loans St. Petersburg 2,500 year old masterpiece
The British Museum has lent one of its contested Elgin Marbles to Russia.
It's the first time the 2,500 year old sculptures have left Britain since they were taken from the Parthenon in Athens 200 years ago. Despite the deepening dispute between Moscow and the international community over Ukraine, museum officials say the decision to lend the statues to the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg is just a normal business choice.
