A day trip to Lopburi, Thailand 2019
Little History of Lopburi province
Lopburi's history dates back to about 1,000 years ago to king Kalavarnadish's (in Thai: Phraya kalavarnadit) reign who came from Pakistan and founded it in 648 EC. Lopburi (Lavapura as it then was) was one of the most important centers in Chao Phraya basin with Mon being its dominant population.
After the foundation of Ayuthaya kingdom (often referred to as Siam), Lopburi became the capital of the kingdom during king Narai's period around mid- 17th century. King Narai used to reside there about 8 months a year.
1. Visit to Phra Prang Sam Yod temple and meeting the monkeys
Monkeys at Khmer temple (Phra Prang Sam Yod) might be the biggest tourist draw at the moment but you can absolutely enter inside the temple and visit it's historical sites with little entrance fee (it was only 30 baht during my visit). The most inviting and interesting thing for me at this temple was interacting with the monkeys who climbs on your shoulder and head as you feed them with a piece of banana ( I couldn't take pictures with the monkeys as it could have snatched away my cell phone anytime).
Phra Prang Sam Yot is Lopburi's oldest and best known landmark for tourists. Founded and built perhaps in 13th century during the reign of king Jayavarman VII (the ruler who built Angkor Wat's most famous palaces and temples), it consists of three holy prangs (stone towers) with central one being the tallest. Phra Prang Sam Yot was originally a Hindu temple with three prangs representing Hindu God of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Thai people later converted it into a Buddhist temple when the kingdom of Ayuthaya came to power.
Be warned that monkeys can be aggressive, are not afraid of humans, and can often steal whatever food or items they can find from unwary visitors. Most of the houses, hotels or guesthouses in Lopburi are monkey-proofed by using wires or keeping their windows shut.
2. Sarn Phra Karn Shrine
The shrine is located just next to Phra Prang Sam Yot across the railway line, oddly placed in middle of the traffic junction. The shrine which is believed to have built in 1951 is housed in a modern temple and is believed to be God Vishnu. Today, Thais revere it as a type of Buddha image and they do believe it be to a strong deity as they worship.
It is said that this small temple was once filled with monkeys in it's ground but they have now been displaced by souvenir vendors. A few strays can still be found around the shrine but most of the monkeys have now moved towards Phra Prang Sam Yot temple
(Interesting fact: group of moneys from this shrine occasionally fights with the monkeys from Phra Prang Sam Yot temple and it may become difficult for the traffic to run smoothly)
The shrine is erected up against an ancient prang dating back to 6th century. As locals come to pray and make merits at the shrine, vendors sell their flower garlands, incense and spiritual items.
3. Visit to King Narai's Palace (พระนารายณ์ราชนิเวศน์)
King Narai's Palace was built by king Narai, The Great, after his order in 1666. The palace was built by French and Italian architects along with Thai artists. King Narai who ruled Ayuthaya kingdom from 1656 to 1688 made this place the second capital of his kingdom. He resided here for almost 8 to 9 months each year which was a place for relaxation, hunting ,administering the country's affairs and welcoming official visitors , except during rainy seasons. After his death in 1688, the palace was abandoned.
King Mongut or Rama IV of the then empire restored the palace by building a new throne hall complex for his stay in 1856. he also renamed the palace to Phra Narai Rajanivet. A large section of the palace, the Phra Phrathiap buildings, served as housing for the “court ladies” - all men other than the king were strictly forbidden from entering.
During king Chulalongkorn or Rama V's reign, the palace was given to the government to use as the Lopburi City Hall.
Later in 1961, it's name was changed to Somdet Phra Narai National Museum which today contains about 1,864 items of ancient artifacts in different buildings of the palace.
Today, the museum also serves as a hall displaying archaeological and art objects, especially the Lopburi-style stone Buddha images, historic paintings from the era of King Narai the Great and Buddhist art objects from the Ayutthaya and Ratanakosin period.

Lop Buri Inn Resort Thailand. Original Place of Monkey Festival
We stayed at the Lop Buri Inn Resort in Thailand recently, and I must tell you that we had an excellent time. This is the place of the famous Monkey Festival that is held here once a year. The staff was awesome and very friendly, nothing but peace and quiet, fresh air and birds singing... I really didn't want to leave. So if you are traveling to Lop Buri for their abundant archaeological sites or are on your way up North, this is one of the best places for your money to spend the night or two. Complimentary drinking water bottles in your room, 24 hour pool, free breakfast, bike rental, you can even catch up on some world news in your room, I remember at least 2 or 3 TV news chanels in English. Almost forgot, if you want wireless internet in your room I think it's like a couple of dollars for a 24 hour period (that came in very handy!) I do think they have regular internet access for free in the reception area though. We'll be back!
