TEMPLE HISTORY:
Sri Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani Kshetra is located in front of the Gangamma temple and diagonally opposite to the Kadu Malleshwara temple on 2nd Temple Street, Malleswaram layout in the north-western area of Bangalore city.
The temple is also known as Nandi Tirtha, Nandishwara teertha, Basava teertha or simply as Malleswaram Nandi gudi.
The main deity of the temple is Shiva, in the form of a Shiva Linga (lingam).
The focal point of this temple is a unique stone Nandi which is positioned facing the Southern direction – Dakshina in Kannada. ‘Dakhshinamuka Nandi’ means ‘South facing Nandi’.
There is a continuous stream of water that flows out of the Nandi’s mouth, which is considered to be holy water, referred to as ‘Tirtha’ in Kannada.
The water from the Nandi’s mouth falls onto the Shivalinga and flows into a stepped tank in the middle of the temple, called a ‘Kalyani’ - Temple tank in Kannada.
Nandi-teertha which was reported by some agencies to be 400 years old was re-discovered in 1997 AD during excavation work in a place south-east of the Kadu Mallikarjuna temple. However, B N Sundara Rao in his book, Bengalurina Itihasa, has documented that the late Rao Bahadur Yele Mallappa Shetty constructed this Kalyani along with the Nandi, and the Shiva-linga. The Kalyani was constructed sometime after the construction of Sankey tank in about 1882 AD. Downward stream from the Sankey tank was observed to be flowing towards the place by Mallappa Shetty. He constructed a conduit pipe from here to the mouth of the Nandi so that water flows gently through the mouth of the Nandi throughout the year onto a Shiva-linga idol (Nandikeshwara) which was set right underneath. This water was then channelled to a Kalyani (stepped tank) which is at a lower level such that excess water flowed onto a well found in the garden in front of the southern entrance of the temple. This was connected to a storm water drain (raja-kaluve) which emptied the excess into another tank bund called Jakkarayana kere. This network has unfortunately been encroached upon. Surrounding the Kalyani is a double storeyed colonnaded structure. A shrine to Ganesha is also present in the vicinity. This, along with the Kadu Mallikarjuna and Gangamma temples, marks the linkage of the sacred to a natural node now.
At some point in its history, the Nandi Tirtha temple fell into disuse and was slowly buried under mud and dirt. As this temple is below the normal ground level of the surrounding area; and there is no Gopuram tower, the entire structure of this temple eventually disappeared from view.
However, knowledge of the existence of a Temple or Kalyani continued to survive in the memory of the people residing in this area.
As Malleswaram developed into one of the preferred residential areas of Bangalore, property prices increased significantly. In 1997, there was an attempt to usurp this temple area and sell it off as a vacant plot of land.
After protests by the local residents, the land in question was dug up and the temple complex gradually emerged from under the mud and dirt.

Sarangapani Temple at Kumbakonam of Tamil Nadu
Sarangapani Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars.[1] This temple is along Kaveri and is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams.[2]
The temple is believed to be of significant antiquity with contributions at different times from Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire and Madurai Nayaks. The temple is enshrined within a huge granite wall and the complex contains all the shrines and the water bodies of the temple. The rajagopuram (the main gateway) has eleven tiers and has a height of 173 ft (53 m). The Potramarai tank, the temple tank, is located opposite to the western entrance of the temple.
Sarangapani is believed to have appeared for sage Hemarishi. The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar. The temple chariot festival is the most prominent festival of the temple, celebrated during the Tamil month of Chittirai (March--April). The twin temple chariots are the third largest in Tamil Nadu, each weighing 300 t (660,000 lb).

Idols of deities in Someswaran Temple in Tamil Nadu
Someswaran Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India.
Someswar Temple is situated in the southern portion of Sri Sarangapani temple. Legend is that the temple shared a larger space during initial construction, but later Sarangapani Temple adjacent to it occupied more space. The nearest railway station is in Kumbakonam, about 2 kilometres from the town. The nearest airport is in Trichy.
The temple has a square sanctum (garbhagriha) which is surrounded by a narrow passage way. The sanctum is connected to a closed mantapa (hall) whose walls are decorated with pilasters and sculptures in frieze. The closed mantapa is connected to a spacious open mantapa comsisting of four large projecting bays (area between four pillars). The piers leading to the sanctum and those facing outward from the open mantapa are the standard Yali (mythical beast) pillars. The eastern gopuram is a well executed, typical 16th century structure.
There are several notable sculptures and decorative features in the complex. An impressive pillar (kambha or nandi) pillar) stands near the tall tower over the entrance gate (gopura). The tower itself exhibits well sculptured images of gods and goddesses from Hindu mythology. The open mantapa consists of forty eight pillars with carvings of divinities in frieze. To the north is the navagraha temple (shrine for the nine planets) with twelve pillars, each pillar representing a saint (rishi). The entrance to the sanctum exhibits sculptures of two door keepers (dvarapalakas). Other notable works of art include sculptures that depict King Ravana lifting Mount Kailash in a bid to appease the god Shiva, Durga slaying Mahishasura (a demon), images of the Nayanmar saints (Tamil Shaivaite saints), depictions of the Girija Kalyana (marriage of Parvati to the god Shiva), the saptarishis (seven sages of Hindu lore). Recent excavations at the temple site has revealed the existence of a temple tank (kalyani) which could be 1200 years old.

SURYANAR KOVIL - The Lord Surya's Temple (The Planet Sun)
Suryanar Kovil is located at the distance of 18 kilometres from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is one of the few historic temples dedicated to Sun god. This Temple was built by Kulothunga Chola during 11th century A.D. And this is one of the nine Navagraha sthalas. The presiding deity is Suriyanar (The Sun) With his consorts Ushadevi and Pratyusha Devi. This is the only temple in Tamil Nadu
which has shrines for all the planetary deities. There are separate shrines for all the other eight planetary deities. All the shrines are arranged facing towards Suryanar. People visit this temple on Sundays and do rituals by offering flowers and cloths to reduce the malefic effect from the planet Sun when the planet is in unfavourable position in their horoscope. Lighting a set of lamps is also commonly followed in the temple.
It is very effective to chant Lord Surya's Gayatri Mantra for 9 Times on Sundays to reduce the malefic effects of Planet Sun.

History:
Once a hunter was chasing a bird, the bird wanted to save its life. So it hid behind the idol of Lord Shiva by covering it with its wings. Lord Shiva appeared to the hunter and asked him not to kill the bird. Lord Shiva assured the hunter that he would offer his brain instead of bird. Then the hunter agreed to him and had the brain of Shiva by inserting his fingers. As he did so, holes were made on his head. Goddess Ganga rose out of the holes, soon after this incident. There are holes on the Siva Lingam in which 10 figures can be inserted. Even after taking large quantities of water from the holes, the level of water does not go down. Once Sri Shankaracharya visited the temple along with his disciples. They wanted to find out the reason as to why the water level was not going down therefore they tied a thread to a spoon and dropped it into the hole then it went deep inside and stopped. When they pulled up the thread, they found blood stains on that, then realised their mistakes and begged pardon from the God.
Unique feature of the Temple:
Shivalinga is always hold a certain level of water (Ganga on the Head), no matter how much water is removed.
The Temple Complex of Avani, Karnataka

It allows the viewer to get a sense of the architecture, the landscape surrounding the village, and the various structures that make up the temple complex, built by the great Western Ganga dynasty. It provides a context to understanding the interview with the Head Priest Sri Shrikant Dikshitar ( particularly regarding the mythological associations of the temple, as one can see how the various ‘devastanams’ are dedicated to various characters from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
