Something is rotten in the U.S. Senate
In a Senate Floor speech on May 25, 2011, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch slams Senate Democrats failure to address Medicare and Social Security saying:
The fact is that it has been 756 days since Democrats passed any budget, the most basic of Congress' constitutional responsibilities. And the fact is that absent a Balanced Budget Amendment, Congress will never adopt the spending restraint necessary to restore constitutional limits on the federal government and the nation's fiscal integrity.
The consequences of this ineptitude reached a new low on the Senate floor yesterday.
To recap for those who missed it, Democrats took to the Senate floor and accused Republicans, who are attempting to right our fiscal ship by reforming programs for the poor and elderly, of seeking to harm women, children, and other vulnerable members of our society.
This verbal assault was deliberate and premeditated. I actually thank my colleagues on the other side who declined to participate in those attacks. Those attacks might make for good politics. But they are terrible for this country.
People here might like to deny it, but the fiscal crisis we face is real. They might like to say that Social Security's finances are just dandy. But the fact is that the disability trust fund will be exhausted by 2018, and the overall trust fund will be exhausted in 2036, a year earlier than we previously thought.
As bad as Social Security is, the situation with Medicare is even worse. According to the Congressional Budget Office, Medicare will be insolvent in 2020. According to the Medicare Trustees, Medicare's unfunded liability is $38.4 trillion.
And what is the Democrats' response to this? All is well. Nothing to see here.
Please move along. This is what the Democratic candidate in the New York special election had to say about her opponent's claim that reforms to Medicare were necessary to restore the solvency of this program. That's simply a scare tactic to tell our seniors that there will be nothing for them....That's not the truth.
Republicans are trying to scare seniors? That's rich.
A liberal surrogate for the Democrats is currently running an advertisement that shows House Budget Committee Chairman, Congressman Paul Ryan, pushing an old woman in a wheelchair over a cliff. The head of the Democratic National Committee — fresh from lecturing conservatives about civility in politics — described the House budget as a tornado through nursing homes. Yesterday we were treated to claims on the Senate floor that stopped short of these attacks, but not that far short. Yet it is Republicans that are trying to scare seniors?
Give me a break.
Still, as bad as yesterday's display was, I ended my day positive about the future.
Last night I attended a dinner celebrating the centennial of President Ronald Reagan's birth. And at that dinner, I had the honor of introducing Lech Walesa, the former President of Poland, who helped to roll back the Iron Curtain and liberate a continent.
When Ronald Reagan became President, the Soviets were on the march. It was not a foregone conclusion that communism would wind up on the ash heap of history. And when Lech Walesa mounted the fence at the Gdansk shipyards, the only thing that he could be certain of was prosecution by the communist authorities. But Reagan and Walesa understood something.
They understood that communism was a lie, played out on a world historical stage.
And to borrow from Shakespeare, Reagan and Walesa understood that the truth will out.
The fundamental truth that we face today — one that cannot be denied — is that our nation faces a spending crisis that no amount of additional taxes can fix. So let's talk about this budget process in a serious way.
Unfortunately, doing so will not reflect well on this chamber. Borrowing from another of Shakespeare's plays, in Hamlet the character Marcellus observed that something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
One might say the same about the Senate's action on the budget resolution. A budget is not law, but it is an important document that installs the guard rails for the operation of fiscal policy.
Under the Congressional Budget Act, each body is to report a resolution by April 15th of each year. President Obama submitted his budget. And the House met the April 15th deadline. But Senate Democrats have no budget of their own.
Here's the Senate Democratic Budget Resolution. So here we are today talking about the House-passed budget. The simple truth is that my colleagues on the other side don't want a vote on a Senate Democratic budget. Instead, they are determined to vote on a budget that everyone knows will not pass this body. Why is this? With all of their hard edged partisan fury, and not even a thin reed of fiscal governance, like Marcellus, it is reasonable to conclude that something is rotten in the U.S. Senate.

The Blue Fugates of Kentucky were an isolated group of settlers who, through a rare recessive gene, developed blue skin. Due to their blue skin and their isolated location, they began to inbreed, eventually becoming something of a local legend - the blue hillbillies that live in the woods - until they reappeared in the 1960s.
Allentown, New York, is a village in New York State that was cut off from the rest of society after a dam flooded the valley where they lived. They call their community The Hollow, but outsiders call it Allentown because almost everybody there is from the same family.
The Habsburgs of Europe were one of the most powerful families in history, ruling over the Holy Roman Empire in Eastern Europe until the early 20th century. But one segment of the Habsburgs in Spain, known as the Spanish Habsburgs, participated in incest and inbreeding for so long that they developed The Habsburg Jaw - a genetic deformity that got so bad that many could barely speak. It was Charles II of Spain that finally put an end to this practice because he was so inbred that he couldn't reproduce.
And the Egyptian royal family of ancient Egypt practiced inbreeding for over a thousand years because they believed that the only person who could mate with a pharaoh was someone else from their family - they were living gods after all. By the time King Tutankhamen was born, their lineage was so ruined that he had multiple genetic deformities and died at only 18.

From Bombshell News To Giuliani 'Grenade': Trump Aide Warned Ukraine Plot Like A Criminal Drug Deal
Ousted TRUMP adviser John Bolton referred to the Ukraine plot as a ‘drug deal’ and warned Giuliani was like a walking hand grenade, according to bombshell testimony from diplomat George Kent in the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry. Kent also testified that Bolton believed Giuliani was a ‘walking grenade.’ Former Federal Prosecutor Gene Rossi argues Bolton ‘had the innate sense to understand that something rotten was occurring.’ Rossi adds Bolton saw the ‘conspiracy’ that ‘existed between the president, Giuliani’ and his associates, and saw ‘the president putting his personal interests and his electoral chances over the welfare of the United States of America.’ Aired on 10/15/19.

Diner says there's a rat in KFC's chicken
Jeanne Moos reports on a fast food flap that has one diner fried. See below for KFC's full response provided to CNN on June 22:
“Recently, a customer questioned the quality of a KFC product, and this received considerable publicity given the sensational nature of his claim. The product has now been tested by a third-party independent lab, which confirmed it is definitely a piece of chicken, as we knew all along. The right thing for this customer to do is to apologize and cease making false claims about the KFC brand.”

The president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, is well known for a frequently upturned nose. On many past occasions, it has been identified by observers as a sneer. But in at least one recent instance, it may actually have been a flinch—one that we Indians, try as we might, cannot ignore. For it concerns us. Or our waste disposal practices, to be specific. What exactly led Trump to investigate the matter is unclear at this stage, but reports from the US suggest that he has sniffed around his country and found something rotten in the state of California, the blame for which he expects us to bear. Speaking at the Economic Club of New York on Tuesday, where he sought to justify his decision to walk out of the Paris Accord on climate change, Trump said that India dumps heaps of garbage into the sea that floats all the way to the US west coast and washes ashore at Los Angeles. We are not the sole accused of sending the US our trash. The US president accused Russia and China, among others, of doing the same. “Isn’t [it] amazing [that their garbage] ends up in Los Angeles? he asked.

New York Rhapsody by Larry Hochman
New York Rhapsody by Larry Hochman, New York – often called New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part – is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States[8][9][10] and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.[11][12]
A global power city,[13] New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations,[14] New York is an important center for international diplomacy[15] and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.[16][17][18][19][20]
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors,[21] New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a county of New York State.[22] The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898.[23] With a census-estimated 2014 population of 8,491,079[1][24] distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2),[25] New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States.[26] As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York,[27][28] making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.[28][29][30] By 2014 census estimates, the New York City metropolitan region remains by a significant margin the most populous in the United States, as defined by both the Metropolitan Statistical Area (20.1 million residents)[5] and the Combined Statistical Area (23.6 million residents).[6] In 2013, the MSA produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.39 trillion,[31] while in 2012, the CSA[32] generated a GMP of over US$1.55 trillion, both ranking first nationally by a wide margin and behind the GDP of only twelve nations and eleven nations, respectively.[33]
New York City traces its roots to its 1624 founding as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626.[34] The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664.[34][35][36] New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.[37] It has been the country's largest city since 1790.[38] The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries[39] and is a globally recognized symbol of the United States and its democracy.[40] wikipedia
'Lyme Wars': The controversy of Lyme disease - ITV On Assignment 15-11-2017
Juliet Bremner is in the state of New York where a controversial battle is taking place over the diagnosis and treatment of lyme disease, one of the fastest-growing diseases in the world.
When I met Julia Bruzzese at the family home in Brooklyn, New York, she was obviously an articulate, engaging young woman. Still only 14, Julia is forced to spend all her waking hours in a wheelchair, after she succumbed to a crippling illness three years ago.
She was a healthy 11-year-old who enjoyed dancing and achieved good grades when she first started to feel listless and weak. Then one day she felt her legs go numb and her vision became blurred.
It was the beginning of a dramatic decline and endless visits to hospitals as her father, Enrico, searched for a diagnosis and treatment. He is convinced Julia is suffering from a condition known as chronic Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is common - a bacteria passed to humans by ticks. If treated promptly with antibiotics it should cause no lasting harm. But the problems, questions and arguments begin if the bacteria is not detected or if it does not respond to an initial course of antibiotics.
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that Lyme disease affects around 300,000 people a year in the United States and yet there is still no precise way of testing for it. Julia says she was bitten and got the classic bullseye rash, but a doctor insisted she didn't need antibiotics because she had tested negative to the blood test.
The family did eventually find a doctor willing to treat Julia. Richard Horowitz is adamant that there is scientific proof that persistent or chronic Lyme exists and prescribes a huge array of drugs and vitamin supplements to treat Julia’s multiple symptoms. She says she is slowly getting better.
But on the other side of the so-called “Lyme Wars” are doctors who say that if there is no bullseye rash and the blood test is negative, the patient cannot have Lyme disease and therefore can't go on to have chronic Lyme. The guidelines issued by the Infectious Diseases Society of America say a three-week course of antibiotics will wipe it out and insurance companies refuse to fund more medication.
As I searched for conclusive evidence, I found myself unable to come down firmly one side or another. I could see that Julia was genuinely sick, she couldn't stand up and had to be carried up and down stairs.
But was this the result of a tick bite that had been left untreated? Or was it a series of unrelated illnesses that had been erroneously bundled together and labelled chronic Lyme?
At the Southampton Hospital on Long Island where they run the tick-borne disease centre, I went to speak to nurse Rebecca Young. She runs the helpline at the hospital which has seen a surge in people concerned about Lyme disease this year.
She is well aware of the controversy and on balance believes persistent or severe Lyme does exist. However, Rebecca thinks that sometimes people use it to explain other undiagnosed illnesses.
There may be some light at the end of the tunnel though. There is now advanced work on a definitive test for Lyme disease, funded by one of the increasingly vocal Lyme awareness groups, Focus On Lyme , who claim the lack of a diagnosis means hundreds of thousands or even millions of patients may be severely ill but unable to access medical care.
The new test hopes to use DNA sequencing to prove beyond doubt whether Lyme exists. If it works it could finally bring these Lyme Wars to an end.

The Here Comes Santa Clause Float in the 1950s at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
The most popular holiday parade in America, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade NY has been a Big Apple tradition since 1924. Attracting more than 3.5 million people to the streets of New York City each year, as well 50 million TV viewers nationwide, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has become so synonymous with Thanksgiving tradition in NYC that it's often shortened to The Macy's Day Parade.
Like any great tradition in NYC, the Macy's Day Parade in Manhattan features a long and storied history. Macy's Day Parade: The Beginnings
The first-ever Macy's Day Parade actually took place on Christmas of 1924. Macy's employees dressed as clowns, cowboys, and other fun costumes, and traveled with Central Park zoo animals and creative floats a lengthy six miles from Herald Square to Harlem in Manhattan.
NYC's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: The Humpty Dumpty Float- 1926
NYC's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: The Humpty Dumpty Float- 1926
The parade was meant to draw attention to the Macy's store in NYC, and the gimmick worked - more than 250,000 people attended the inaugural Macy's Day Parade. It was decided that this NYC parade would become an annual NY event in Manhattan.
In 1927, Felix the Cat became the first giant balloon to ever take part in the Macy's Day Parade. In 1928, Felix was inflated with helium, and without a plan to deflate this massive balloon, NYC parade organizers simply let Felix fly off into the sky. Unfortunately, he popped soon thereafter.
The Macy's Day Parade continued to let the balloons fly off in subsequent years, only these balloons would have a return address written on them, and whoever found the balloon could return the balloon for a prize from Macy's. However, the results of this experiment weren't exactly successful.

I'm an American National Guard Captain. I Didn't Enlist to Abandon our Kurdish Allies | NYT Opinion
Alan Kennedy, a captain in the Colorado Army National Guard who served this summer in northern Syria, condemns President Trump’s decision to fully withdraw American troops from the area and abandon our Kurdish allies to a Turkish incursion. He calls a recently negotiated 120-hour cease-fire, which reports suggest Turkey has already violated, “too little too late.” He fears that the lack of American commitment and credibility has cleared the way for an ethnic cleansing of the Kurds and a resurgence of the Islamic State.
Captain Kennedy’s concerns echo the sentiments of soldiers who have had to abandon their posts reluctantly, and lawmakers who on Wednesday delivered a resounding and rare bipartisan rebuke of President Trump’s actions in Syria.
