The Somnath temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, India, is the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.
It is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot. The temple is considered sacred due to the various legends connected to it. Somnath means Lord of the Soma, an epithet of Shiva.
The Somnath temple is known as the Shrine Eternal. This legendary temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by Islamic kings and Hindu kings respectively.
Most recently it was rebuilt in November 1947, when Vallabhbhai Patel visited the area for the integration of Junagadh and mooted a plan for restoration. After Patel's death, the rebuilding continued under Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi, another minister of the Government of India.

Best Time To Visit : The climate of Somnath is mild with the temperature ranging between 20°C and 28°C in the winters and between 28°C and 34°C in the summers.
History
It is said that the original temple of Somnath was built by the Moon God and was made of gold. After it was razed to the ground, it was rebuilt with silver by Ravana. When the silver temple was knocked down, it was reconstructed in wood by Krishna. And when this was pulled down, an edifice of stone was erected by Bhimdev.

The present temple, Kailash Mahameru Prasad is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture and reflects the inherent skill of sompuras, Gujarat's master masons. It has the shikhara, the Garbhagriha, the sabha mandap and the nritya mandap. It has been built in such a position that there is no land between the Somnath temple and Antarctica. This fact finds mention in the inscription found on the protection wall of the temple.
The Bhalka Tirth is the place where Lord Krishna was mistaken for a deer and wounded by an arrow while sleeping in a deerskin. The place is situated on the confluence of three rivers. There is a sun temple (Suraj Mandir) nearby that was also knocked down by Mahmud of Ghazni.The Junagarh Gate is a very ancient triple gate that Mahmud of Ghazni broke through to take the town. The Mai Puri was once a Sun temple but was later converted into a mosque during Mahmud of Ghazni's time. The Ahilyabai Temple was built as a substitute for the original Somnath Temple.
Places Around Somnath
The Gir National Park is the last home of the Asiatic Lion and is situated around 43 km off Somnath. This 1400 sq km sanctuary was set up to protect the lions whose numbers at one point had come down to less than 200. Now the number is believed to have reached around 285 at the last count. Chorwad is a new beach resort developed by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat at a distance of around 26 km from Somnath. Veraval is a major fishing port and a base point for the visit to Somnath.
How To Reach
By Air - The nearest airport from Somnath is Keshod 55 km away and linked to Mumbai. There are regular buses and taxis plying between Keshod and Somnath.
By Rail - The nearest railhead is seven km away at Veraval, which is connected by train to Ahmedabad and some other cities in gujarat.
By Road - State transport corporation buses and private coaches run regular service to other cities in the region. Somnath is connected by a good road network to the other nearby places like Veraval 7 km, Mumbai 889 km, Ahmedabad 400 km, Bhavnagar 266 km, Junagarh 85 km, and Porbandar 122 km.(Source :

On the eve of 'Akshaya Tritiya' Mumbai based family donated 40kg gold to Somnath temple, before this for three years a person named Dilip Bhai used to donate 108kg, but this year with those of donation the temple construction has been reorganized in the same manner how it use to look before filled with gold.

Entry, Darshan & Aarti Timings:
All the Electronic/Electric Equipment, Gadgets are strictly prohibited (viz. Mobile, Camera, laptop, tablets, calculators, Even your Remote Car Key, etc.). keep all these items at your room or you can be stored in Lockers available in Cloak Room. The Cloakroom facility is free of cost. Digital locker is chargeable.
Darshan Timing is from 6 AM to 9.30PM.
Aarti Timings : Morning = 7:00 Am, 12:00Noon, 7:00Pm.
Light And Sound Show Timing = 8PM To 9PM. (take your tickets in the evening)
(Except in the Monsoon / Rainy Season).
Wheel Chairs / Golf Cart is available for physically challenged / Senior Citizens at the Main Gate of the Temple. And Lift Facility is available inside the Temple premise.

Triveni Sangam Ghat, Triveni ghat in Somnath deserves special mention as a holy place as per Indian mythology since it finds mention even in epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. This is the meeting place of three important rivers i.e. Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati before they finally empty themselves out in the Arabian Sea. Here you can take a holy bath or just hang around & feed some birds.
Sura Mandir. Just opposite to Triveni Ghat this Temple is located, here you can take darshan of Shiva Linga, Harsiddhi Mata, Surya Dev, and a small cave too.
Golok Dham:
This Place is dedicated to Lord Krishna & Located on Bank of river Hirna, This place is near to Triveni Sangam ( around 1km) here you can visit Geta Mandir, Baram Gufa and Temple of Radha Krishna and also footprints of Krishna.
Bhalka Tirth:
Bhalka Teerth has situated almost 4 kilometers away from the Somnath temple, is the place where Krishna was hit by an arrow shot by a hunter named Jara while he was resting under the Banyan tree, after which he is said to have left the earth for the heavenly abode, an act referred to in the Puranas as Shri Krishna Neejdham Prasthan Leela.
Ban Ganga:
From Bhalka Tirth you can easily visit Ban Ganga, Here you can find Shiva Linga on Sea Shore and you can do Abhishek by sea water by yourself, it gives very great feeling so you don't miss this.
In the end, you should not miss the Laser Show aka light & sound show which starts at 8: PM but you should buy your tickets by 5 or 6 pm otherwise all tickets will be sold out. to watch Laser Show Video Youtube Link

Since Chandra worshiped Shiva here, Shiva gets the name Somnath, which means ‘lord of the moon.’ The Mahabharata describes Somnath as a city south of the confluence of River Sarasvati to the sea. Somnath is host to one of the twelve jyotirlingas. Krishna met his end in a place called Veraval, which is near Somnath. Arjuna is said to have performed the last rites of Krishna at the confluence of rivers
