Sedona is an Arizona desert town near Flagstaff that’s surrounded by red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. It’s noted for its mild climate and vibrant arts community. Uptown Sedona is dense with New Age shops, spas and art galleries. On the town’s outskirts, numerous trailheads access Red Rock State Park, which offers bird-watching, hiking and picnicking spots.
Nestled amid striking red sandstone formations at the south end of the 16-mile Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona attracts spiritual seekers, artists and healers, as well as day-trippers from Phoenix trying to escape the oppressive heat. Many New Age types believe that this area is the center of vortexes (not 'vortices' here in Sedona) that radiate the earth's power, and you'll find all sorts of alternative medicines and practices on display. More tangibly, the surrounding canyons offer outstanding hiking, biking, swimming and camping.
The town itself bustles with art galleries and expensive gourmet restaurants. In summer the traffic and the crowds can be heavy. Regionally, Oak Creek Canyon begins north of Uptown Sedona; the Village of Oak Creek, however, is south of the city.
Sedona's main attraction is its array of red sandstone formations. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The red rocks form a popular backdrop for many activities, ranging from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. Sedona was named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly, the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality and industriousness.
Sedona is located in the Upper Sonoran Desert of northern Arizona. Sedona has mild winters and hot summers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 square miles (49.7 km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.22%, is water. The red rocks of Sedona are formed by a unique layer of rock known as the Schnebly Hill Formation. The Schnebly Hill Formation is a thick layer of red to orange-colored sandstone found only in the Sedona vicinity. The sandstone, a member of the Supai Group, was deposited during the Permian Period.

Award winning artist Sharon Brening, a member of Western Artists of America, has been painting since she was eight years old. At an even earlier age, she was introduced to the Southwest and the cultures of Native America. She has a rich body of work unrivaled by many artists and her paintings hang today in museums, galleries and private collections around the United States. Her passion for art was never far from her daily life. She continued developing her art in different mediums until finally she focused on her painting. Charles Pearce, one of America's foremost collectors of Western Art, personally chose Wrestling with Innocence for the Pearce Museum's prestigious permanent collection. About Western Artists of America
Western Artists of America is an organization formed in 2000 for the purpose of promoting the talents of professional fine artists specializing in the genre of cowboy, Native American, pioneer, cattle and horse subjects with backgrounds appropriate to the subject matter. Founders started the Western Artists of America to open western art up to more artists, and to expand the current understanding of what comprised western art. Formed to showcase the talents of the many qualified fine western artists of today irrespective of gender, the more seasoned members seek out up and coming talent who exhibit a high interest in the western genre for mentoring. Members of the WAA include forty of the world's best artists and sculptors. Their works feature our Western heroes with the integrity, strength of spirit, and moral character that is an integral part of our Western heritage. Art lovers and art collectors will view the American West, in all its splendor: cowboys and cowgirls, Native American children, elders and warriors, rodeo, western landscapes, mountain men, buffalo, stagecoaches and more.
These artists' works are showcased in an annual event sponsored by a national art museum. The Pearce Museum on the Navarro College campus in Corsicana, Texas will host the 2012 show and sale for the WAA on March 23 and 24, 2012. Website: WesternArtistsOfAmerica.com
