Surfing in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa - Ticket To Ride Surf Camp, Jan 2013
Here's a look at our first week in J-Bay. The group have been learning a lot from Etianne and everyone's surfing has improved a lot, with each member riding a point break wave. We have also painted a township school as one of our community projects, each of the group returned with very painted hands! A highlight of J-Bay so far has been Klee's birthday when we took a trip to the waterfalls where there is a zip wire ride into the water, this created much fun and a lot of laughs. Take a look for yourself, hope you enjoy the blog.

7th Heaven and Jbay Surf Edit Vlog
Skate lessons for 7th Heaven youth and footage from Point and Supers during the last swell.
I've waited 8 years for this day.
Surf grom.
I am a surfer. The old school surfer type, before it became mainstream. When the main breaks had 6 to 8 guys in the water. Nowadays its big business, fashionable, trendy and crowded. The same main break having 30 to 40 plus guys in the lineup.
In my 30 years in the water, I can still remember my first wave, the rush of the water below my feet the first blue wall, that first barrel, surfing Super Tubes at 8foot plus and launching off the back of that monster through fear of dying. Traveling to remote surf destination in Madagaskar and the turquoise waters of the Maldives. Have been chased out of the water by agro locals in Vicbay.
It has not been a sport it has been a lifestyle for me.
I waited 8 years for this day. I'm a dad of two Jordan (8) and Alex (6). From the time they could walk I would bite my tongue trying not to persuade them into the water. It had to come from them.
Sunday the 5th of Januar 2020 I received a call the surf was on. Decided to go have a quick look before I suited up, Jordan asked if he could ride along. We hopped on the scooter and set off to the beach. Seal Point was perfect. Warm water, 3 to 4 foot clean and glassy conditions. Jordan was playing at the water's edge looking for beach diamonds. Beach diamonds are pieces of glass that have been rubbed smooth over time with the continuous rolling and tumbling on beach sand. Our game and attempt at picking up beach litter. The kids love it, we now have many jars filled with beach diamonds.
Jordan came running up off the rocks and said, Hey dad are we going surfing? Pause... be cool breath slowly, stay calm, did I hear correctly. Sure my boy, but I think we should hit the beach where there are no rocks
Raced home suited up. Threw my fish on the couch, gave Jordi a few pointers. Aways put your feet on the stringer (the middle piece of wood on the board) get your feet nice and wide like this. Don't lean forward or back, stay in the middle of the board. I told the girls to join us and raced back to the beach with my boy.
We took it slow. Only going in a little deeper every time, he was so brave. Seasoned surfers take wave knowledge for granted. We forget how we can read the ocean, how the water moves on the surface will tell us what's happening below, what to do when we are tumbled in the white water, how to deal with serges and rip tides.
I got him waist-deep and pushed him onto a rolling foamy. And there he goes stood up the first time.
And so it went for a better part of an hour. Me pushing Jords onto the wave and body surfing to fetch the board and drag him back to the push-in spot.
Vicki and Alex came down and I offer to push Alex into a wave. She was ready until she saw the wax and wanted to know this white stuff was. I explained that it's the sticky stuff that keeps you from slipping off your board. She took one look and ran off into the surf, shouting.
Next time dad

Barrelled at Boneyards, Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa, May 2012
Boneyards is the outside section that leads into Supertubes. It is more of a locals wave, but makes great watching if you can't surf it. On smaller swells there is a left too that runs into the beach. When its big it is suited to more experienced surfers, but there are plenty of more mellow waves suitable for beginners and improvers in the Bay. For example we surf 'Point', and a small beach break 200yds from our guesthouse accommodation on our South Africa surfing holiday. Read all about our holiday on our website globalsurfadventures.co.uk
