Sonargaon was the old capital of Bengal in the medieval period. It was an important administrative and commercial center of Bengal, and a rich maritime center. Sonargaon was the seat of the medieval Muslim rulers and governors of eastern Bengal. Different rulers from 13th century used Sonargaon as their capital. In different time, Sonargaon was the place to become the stair to the throne of Bengal for many different rulers. Sonargaon was used as a mint capital beside Gauda in medieval period. It was abandoned as capital of Bengal in 1610 by the Mughal rulers when they shifted the capital of Bengal to Jahangirnagar, which was later named Dhaka. Now a days, very few trace of the old capital is remaining in Sonargaon. Seeing the quiet little village, no one can even imagine how glorious this place once was on it’s prime time.

Sonargaon Museum Narayanganj - Panam Nagar
Sonargaon was a historic administrative, commercial and maritime centre in Bengal. Situated in the centre of the Ganges delta, it was the seat of the medieval Muslim rulers and governors of eastern Bengal. Sonargaon was described by numerous historic travellers, including Ibn Battuta, Ma Huan, Niccolò de' Conti and Ralph Fitch as a thriving centre of trade and commerce.
It was an administrative centre of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah's sultanate, the Bengal Sultanate and the Kingdom of Bhati.

Panam Nagar (পানাম নগর), ancient Painam, a locality now in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj district. It is about 2.5 kilometre to the north of Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Mograpara point. It is said to have been the site of Hindu capital city of Sonargaon emerging in the seventh decade of the thirteenth century. The Panam area formed part of the Muslim metropolis developed on the south of the old city, and perhaps constituted the place of residence of the early Muslim governors’. After the Mughal conquest of Sonargaon (1611) the Panam area was connected with the ruling metropolis by construction of highways and bridges. Panam still possesses three brick bridges belonging to the Mughal period: Panam Bridge, Dalalpur Bridge and Panamnagar Bridge.
The existence of these bridges, and the canals enclosing the site on three sides is indicative of its being a suburban area of the medieval city. The pucca road which leads from the Mograpara crossing on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the direction of Panam extending up to the Neel-Kuthi looks like a dividing line between medieval Sonargaon and the present Panamnagar, the only surviving relics of the Panam area. The Panam township stands on the east of this road opposite Aminpur, and a one-arched humped bridge leads from the same road over a narrow canal to the main street of Panamnagar.
In all probability the present Panamnagar grew as a by-product of the commercial activities of the english east india company and of the Permanent Settlement. The East India Company established their factory in Panam for the purchase of muslin and other cotton fabrics. The Company, for the purchase of muslin, used to distribute annually to the weavers from their factory in Panam as much as a lakh of rupees as dadni (dadni system advance), and it is estimated that there were then 1400 families of Hindu and Muslim weavers in and around Panam.
Sonargaon developed into a center of trade in cotton fabrics, chiefly English piece goods, during the colonial period, and thereby grew the new township of Panamnagar. A group of Hindu talukdars, who came into being from among the traders in the nineteenth century, chose this site for their residence. The existing brick buildings of Panamnagar, obviously the residence of the Hindu merchant-talukdars, can be dated back to early nineteenth, and the later ones to late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Panamnagar which developed in the nineteenth century, continued to flourish till the end of the Second World War.
You can rich that place using bus from Dhaka (Gulistan). This will take you around 1 hour to reach at the place. You have to get down from the bus at Mograpara Crossing. From the crossing, you have to take a rickshaw, and have to tell the puller to drop you at Panam Nagar. This will require around 20 taka for the lift.

History
Pre-Muslim period
The name Sonargaon came as the Bangla version of the ancient name Suvarnagrama. Buddhist ruler Danujamadhava Dasharathadeva shifted his capital to Suvarnagrama from Bikrampur sometime in the middle of the 13th century. In early 14th century, Bauddha ruling in this area ended when Shamsuddin Firoz Shah (reigned 1301–1322) of Lakhnauti occupied and annexed it to his kingdom.[3]
Muslim period
Muslim settlers first arrive in Sonargaon region in around 1281.Sharfuddin Abu Tawwamah, a medieval Sufi saint and Islamicphilosopher came and settled here sometime between 1282 and 1287. He then established his Khanqah and founded a Madrasa.
Firoz Shah built a mint in Sonargaon from where a large number of coins were issued. When he died in 1322, his son, Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah, replaced him as the ruler. In 1324 Delhi Sultan, Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, declared war against him and after the battle, Bahadur Shah was captured and Bengal, including Sonargaon, became a province of Delhi Sultanate. The same year, Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq, son and successor of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, released him and appointed him as the governor of Sonargaon province.
After 4 years of governorship, in 1328, Bahadur Shah declared independence of Bengal. Delhi Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq sent his general, Bahram Khan, to depose him. In the battle, Bahadur Shah was defeated and killed. Bahram Khan recaptured Sonargaon for the Delhi Sultanate and he was also appointed the governor of Sonargaon.
When Bahram Khan died in 1338, his armour-bearer, Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah, declared himself the independent Sultan of Sonargaon.Fakhruddin sponsored several construction projects, including a trunk road and raised embankments, along with mosques and tombs. 14th century Moroccan traveller, Ibn Batuta, after visiting the capital in 1346, described Fakhruddin as a distinguished sovereign who loved strangers, particularly the fakirs and sufis.[10] After the death of Fakhruddin in 1349, Ikhtiyaruddin Ghazi Shahbecame the next independent ruler of Sonargaon.
Ilyas Shah, the independent ruler of Lakhnauti, attacked Sonargaon in 1352. After defeating Ikhtiyaruddin Ghazi Shah, he became the sole ruler of whole Bengal for the first time in history and thus he became the founder of a sultanate of the unified Bengal.
A squadron of the Chinese fleet of Zheng He, commanded by the eunuch Hong Bao, visited Sonargaon in 1432. The information about that expedition comes from the book of one of its participants, the Muslim translator Ma Huan.[1] In 1451 Huan wrote his experience in details in his book Yingyai Shenglan (The Overall Survey of the Ocean's Shores).
Sonargaon is the eastern terminus of the Grand Trunk Road, which was built by the Pashtun emperor Sher Shah Suri and extended approximately 2500 kilometres from Bangladesh across northern India and Pakistan to Kabul in Afghanistan.[5]
Isa Khan's rule
When Taj Khan Karrani was the independent Afghan ruler of Bengal, Isa Khan obtained an estate in Sonargaon and Maheswardi Pargana in 1564 as a vassal of the Karrani rulers. Isa Khan gradually increased his strength and in 1571 he was designated as the ruler of the whole Bhati region. In 1575 he helped Daud Khan Karranifight the Mughal flotilla in the vicinity of Sonargaon.[13]
Daud Khan Karrani died in the Battle of Raj Mahal against Mughals in 1576. Akbar then made Isa Khan the zamindar of Sonargaon, making him one of the Baro-Bhuiyans. However, he continued resisting Mughal rule. With the help of his allies, he stood defiant against Mughals in battle against Subahdar Khan Jahan in 1578, Subahdar Shahbaz Khan in 1584 and Durjan Singh in 1597. Isa Khan died in September 1599. His son, Musa Khan, then took control of the Bhati region. But after the defeat of Musa Khan on 10 July 1610[14] by Islam Khan, the army general of Mughals, Sonargaon became one of the sarkarsof Bengal subah. The capital of Bengal was then shifted to Jahangirnagar (later named Dhaka).
Bangladesh period
Lok Shilpa Jadughar (Folk Art and Craft Museum) of Sonargaon was established by Bangladeshi painter Joynul Abedin on 12 March 1975. The house, originally called Bara Sardar Bari, was built in 1901.

Panam City was established in the late 19th century. It was the most important trading center of cotton fabrics during the British period. Today this area is protected by the department of archaeology of Bangladesh. The city area was linked with the central city area by three brick bridges – Panam Bridge, Dalalpur Bridge, and PanamNagar Bridge.
It is seemed Hindu talukdars (rich business person) select the place as their residence town. Panam Nagar, the beautiful structures was rising in the last quarter of the 13th century. No need for any ticket requires visiting this old town. The city gradually lost its commercial importance. Sonargaon Folk Art Museum is very near to Panam City.
How to Go
It is about 2.5 kilometers to the north of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Mograpara Point. The place is only 0.5km away from Sonargaon Folk Art Museum.The place is 38.4 km from Dhaka. It is at Sonargaon Upazila in Narayanganj district, Bangladesh. Buses are available from Gulistan. The journey will be easy if it is used Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover. Buses are going Gulistan, Jatrabari, Dhaka-Chittagong highway. It is less the one hour journey from Dhaka and bus fare is within Tk.50/- per person. It is better to go there on the micro car with a group.
Hotels and Accommodations
The spot is very near to Dhaka. The visitor can stay the night in Dhaka. Hotels are also available in Narayanganj.
Nearest Tourist Places
The district Narayanganj is very famous for tourism. There are many historical, beautiful places. Loknath Temple, Jyoti Basu house are very near to Panam Nagar.

SONARGAON MUSEUM AT NARAYANGANJ IN BANGLADESH/সোনার গাঁ'র ঐতিহাসিক স্থাপনা ও জাদুঘর
Sonargaon is one of the oldest capitals of Bengal. It became the seat of the Hindu Deva Dynasty in the mid-13th century.
But this was short-lived, as Hindu rule ended in the early 14th century.
Sonargaon was under independent rule for some years, before becoming a subsidiary capital of the Sultanate of Bengal, then the Sultanate of Delhi.
The city ended up in the hands of the Mughal Empire after their rise to power across the Subcontinent.
The British eventually took control of the region,
and although it lost much of its significance, the city was further developed with a new neighbourhood called Panam City, which was settled by wealthy Hindu merchants.
Much of the old Hindu and Mughal buildings are gone or ruined, but some have survived. Many of the British-era structures are still present today.
This is about 15-20 taka rickshaw fare cost from the Mograpara Corssing at Sonargaon.
How To Reach: Sonargaon Upazila
Frequent bus services to Sonargaon operate from Gulistan, Saidabad and other bus stands in Dhaka. Tickets may be bought on roadside counters.
The price of the ticket from Gulistan bus stand is around 35 BDT, and the ride may take about 40 minutes, depending on the unpredictable traffic. Mention your destination as Mograpara.
You can reach that place using bus from Dhaka (Gulistan). This will take you around 1 hour to reach at the place.
You have to get down from the bus at Mograpara Crossing.From the crossing, you have to take a rickshaw, and have to tell the puller to drop you at Sonargaon. This will require 20 taka for the lift.
Lok Shilpa Jadughar (Folk Art and Craft Museum) of Sonargaon was established by Bangladeshi painter Joynul Abedin on March 12, 1975.
It will cost you 10 taka to enter the museum area.
Its a vast area, and will take you lots of time to round the area.
You’ll find a art gallery of “Zainul Abedin” inside the museum area.
There are two Exhibition Galleries inside the museum.
Both of them consist of some status showing the local life of Bangladeshi people, for example farming, woman working etc. Also you’ll find the miniature version of the several boats from my country,
which are now a days vanished after competing with the mechanical vehicles.
Hotels and Accommodations
The spot is very near to Dhaka. The visitor can stay the night in Dhaka. Hotels are also available in Narayanganj.
Nearest Tourist Places
The district Narayanganj is very famous for tourism. There are many historical, beautiful places. Loknath Temple, Jyoti Basu house are very near to Panam Nagar.

British colonial architecture preserved in Sonargaon includes the Ananda Mohan Piddar House, and other street-front houses. For travelers making their way along the 2,500-kilometer Grand Trunk Road from Peshawar in the Hindu Kush, Sonargaon marked the end of the line. Threats to the site include flooding, vandalism, unauthorized occupation, illegal development etc.
