Inside China's new underground hotel that's built in a quarry and has underwater rooms
On December 1, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel officially opened for business.
The resort, which took 10 years of construction to build, is located inside a quarry roughly 20 minutes outside of Shanghai. Of the hotel's 18 floors, 16 are underground with two floors underwater.
The 336-room hotel also has scenic views of nature, large sculptures, and glass walkways. But don't stress out if you can't pay the $564 per-night fee or make it to China any time soon.
Below, take an inside look at the hotel and get a glimpse of what the Shanghai resort has to offer.
The hotel was built into a quarry at the base of the Sheshan mountain range.
Representatives for the resort told INSIDER that the hotel was built without conforming to the traditional architectural concept of building towards the sky.
Instead, the hotel was unconventionally designed approximately 288 feet below ground.
Two floors, which are not visible in the photo, are completely submerged underwater.
Two floors of the hotel are located above ground.
The largest sculpture at the resort, located at the hotel's entrance, is abstractly shaped like a dragon.
While amenities differ depending on where you stay, even the most basic guest rooms are full of perks. Guests who stay in Classic Rooms, for example, can expect to find 55-inch LCD TVs, Bose sound systems, Dyson hairdryers, high-speed internet, and Nespresso coffee machines.
From fancy restaurants to laid-back lounges, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland includes six different places to eat.
Commune, for example, provides buffet-style food and a children's play area, while the bird-inspired Cai Feng Lou is recommended for business banquets and family dinners.
The underwater restaurant is filled with custom-built aquariums and offers seasonal seafood from countries like Japan, France, and the US.
Not only is the area surrounded by cliffs and lush trees, but those who walk the pathway can also look down to see rushing water and mountain valleys.
Resort representatives compared walking on the pathway to walking on the clouds.
Because they're surrounded by forests and large bodies of water, hotel guests just might forget that they're staying inside a quarry.
Nature lovers can enjoy the hotel's natural waterfall, while those who remain inside can use the spa and indoor swimming pool.
Though the hotel is worth a trip in and of itself, the resort is located near many tourist attractions, such as the Sheshan National Forest Park, Chenshan Botanical Garden, Tianma Country Club, Guangfulin Park, Shanghai Sculpture Park, and Shanghai Happy Valley.

ABANDONED Pit Mine Becomes HOTEL!
Something amazing is happening outside of the city limits of Shanghai, an old, abandoned pit mine is being brought back to life. On this episode we’ll take a look how this old pit mine is becoming a hotel.
The Intercontinental Shimao quarry hotel is a hotel being built at the site of an old pit mine in the Songjiang District of Shanghai, China. This 5 star hotel will be built in an S shape along one wall of the abandoned pit mine at the base of the Tianmeshan Mountain. This 18 floor hotel will designate 2 of those floors being underwater in the partially flooded pit at the bottom. The lobby, meeting center, recreation facilities and dining are the only 2 floors that will be above ground. The hotel will have 370 rooms, as well as a 1000 person conference room, grand ballroom cafes and restaurants on the ground floor. It is expected to have a soft opening by the end of 2017 and rooms will cost an estimated $320 per night. Hanging gardens will cascade off the roofs giving the image of a green hillside growing down the face of the pit as well as a vertical glass atrium will run from the bottom to the ground level disguised as a waterfall.
Not only is this a hotel but it will feature extreme sports activities like bungee jumping, rock climbing and sightseeing platform. A lake will be made by filling in part of the pit in front of the hotel for swimming and relaxing in the sun. Construction has been difficult on this project but expected considering this is the world’s lowest artificial altitude hotel. The biggest challenges have been designing the safety systems like fire safety, waterproof facilities, and earthquake precautions. After many delays the project has moved forward swiftly since 2014. Drones, 3d scanners, and wire-release robots have all been used in the preparation for this building, allowing engineers to detect uneven rock surfaces, make precise measurements and help with transport of construction materials and workers.

INTER CONTINENTAL SHANGHAI WONDERLAND

The design and construction process of the hotel was fraught with many delays prior to 2013. Since 2013, however, the design optimization and onsite construction progressed at a fairly swift pace. The fit-out work carried out in 2017 and finally opened on November 20, 2018.
History
The InterContinental Hotels Group is behind the project as one of its flagship hotels in the country under the banner of Shimao Wonderland InterContinental. The design was shortlisted for an award at the World Architecture Festival in 2009. According to Shanghaiist, the Shanghai Shimao Property Group has an investment of US$555 million in the project. It opened on November 20, 2018.
Construction
The concept and facade design firm for this project is JADE+QA, led by Martin Jochman, who designed the concept while working with ATKINS and in 2013 set up his own practice in Shanghai and continued working on this project directly for the developer Shimao with his own studio JADE+QA. The local architectural firm is ECADI (East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.), which is responsible for design development, construction documents, structural design and MEP. The interior design firms are CCD (Cheng Chung Design) and AB Concept. The lighting design consultant is Illuminate Lighting Design.
The hotel is 18 stories,16 of which are below ground level including two projected underwater floors; two of the floors are above the 88m deep quarry. The abandoned quarry is partially filled with water to create an artificial lake. The hotel is designed in an S shape utilizing a convex to concave form. The architects' vision is one of sequential hanging gardens that will produce the effect of a green hill extending down the face of the quarry. Both the quarry's rock face and the wings of the blocks of guest rooms are projected to surround an atrium within the hotel. The vertical atrium made of glass will (above the hotel) is intended to symbolise an artificial waterfall.Gizmag called the waterfall the pièce de résistance of the project.
