Kayaking Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River Dardanelles Run in California
The inflow to Donnell Lake was around 1200 cfs when we kayaked this section. We put on below kennedy meadows just after a log and unrunnable drop in the first gorge we came to.
Donells Vista California HWY 108
East of Sonora. Hwy 108.
CA DH1
No traffic lights. No movie theaters. No high school. No bank. No doctors or dentists. Welcome to Alpine County, population 1200. But who needs the basics when you've got the greatest luxury of all? Northern California's DH1, tucked away between Hwy 395 and the tiny county seat of Markleeville, is all any motorcyclist needs. Tied for tops in Twistiness. Top quarter percentile in Pavement. Ranked number three for Remoteness. And with the high, lingering views from the barren sagelands of Monitor Pass east to the peaks across Nevada's Antelope Valley and south over the forested belts to the mountains of the Carson Iceberg Wilderness, it rates first in Northern California for Scenery. The only reason it falls to 21st for Character is because it's over so fast. The Engineering, while appearing average, is outstanding when you consider that even though this road rises and falls steeply in its twisting climb over the pass, you can accelerate confidently through the curves whether you're going up or down. The only exceptions to this are some of the curves on the spectacular climb above the Antelope Valley off Hwy 395 and a few in the rocky canyon east of the Hwy 4 junction. You might be left wondering, though -- if this county has no tax base, where does it get its money? Ask the county sheriff.
TIRES:
Twistiness: 30/30
Pavement: 17.6/20
Engineering:5.4/10
Remoteness: 9.6/10
Scenery: 13.8/15
Character: 10.6/15
Driving across Sonora Pass to Mammoth California and Swimming in Mono Lake (Tufa Formations)
We are leaving Yosemite national park and are driving to Mammoth Lakes California. The original idea was to drive across Tioga pass from Yosemite to Mammoth lakes but unfortunately Tioga pass was closed due to 8ft of snow covering the road still. So we had a 4 hour de-tour to Mammoth lakes over Sonora Pass instead.
We had a few things that we wanted to see over the next 2 days one of which was Mono Lake which has rock formations called Tufa's. Tufa's are made up from a chemical reaction from the water inside Mono Lake which is two and a half times saltier than the sea. The fact Mono Lakes salt content is so high means that you will naturally float in the lake so we decided to have a little swim. Simple... Yeah right!
Mammoth is a very nice little town that operates as a Ski resort in the winter and then a summer holidays destination in the Summer months when there is no snow!

It's on California Highway 108 nearly at the Sonora Pass. It has nice paved trails from the parking lot to this vista point. One trail is well suited to wheelchairs.

Pt2: Oakdale/Knights Ferry CA, Rodden/Orange Blossom Rd
In this video (check out part one for the beginning) I'm driving down Orange Blossom Rd. outside Oakdale CA. Farther east, it'll head into the small historic town of Knights Ferry, CA. As usual, this was filmed on my 400k+mile Toyota Echo Coupe's front license plate.
Knights Ferry has the longest covered bridge west of The Rocky Mountains, and sits at the end of a world renowned (to geologists) table mountain. The table mountain is essentially an ancient lava flow that filled a riverbed, and as the land around it eroded, the cooled lava stood above it making a mesa. It's one of the best examples of this in the world. the source of this volcanism is found many miles up Highway 108 (passes within half a mile of Knights Ferry) toward Sonora Pass, with an extinct volcanic neck called Dardanelle Cone. Sonora Pass is another fantastic road, but that's a later video, as of right now it's under the High Sierra Nevada snow.
Also, Knights Ferry has a good eat at The 1950's Roadhouse-- a '50's themed diner that's quite tasty. The day I went happened to be one of their biggest (if not the biggest) events of the year for them: a civil war reenactment. Normally-quiet streets were packed with cars, people, and motorcycles. Any other day it's much more subdued, and is good for hiking and kayaking the Stanislaus River that runs through it.
Lake Dardanelles - Part 1 Exploring The Luther Ranch
Much like the Meiss Ranch this historical site resides up near Big Meadow in the Luther Pass. The meadows provided the livestock were great places for cattle to graze while nearby creeks could provide irrigation for crops and fish as a source of food. Not much remains but in this clip I take you on a tour of the property and as you can see its very scenic 360 degrees.
Stanislaus River 6 at the Wa Ka Luu Hep Yoo Campground
I recorded this while sitting on a rock and watching the river flow. I'll be going back to Sourgrass soon to map out the roads in the area with my GPS device and record more video. I'll use my tripod next time.

SAKS: Middle Fork Stanislaus (Sand Flat)
May 26th, 2018
Middle Fork Stanislaus - Sand Flat section
1450 cfs
Joe had injured his shoulder on a previous trip and was forced to hike out. Not knowing how long flows on this often dewatered section of river would last, time was short. Allen, Boone, and myself rallied down to Camp 9 early Saturday morning. I hiked in while Boone and Allen continued up to the normal put-in, where they'd paddle down to meet me. Things went pretty well and we were able to enjoy some great whitewater get off the river well before dark! What a day!
