Whale Watching with Sooke Coastal Explorations on the Juan de Fuca Strait in Sooke, BC Canada
Russ Nicks, owner and operator with Sooke Coastal Explorations, took us out for a whale watching trip. Leaving from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina, we ran into the orcas near Pedder Bay and Race Rocks Lighthouse.
We managed to watch 5 transient Orca zig zag around the area, in search of food. We also went to Race Rocks Lighthouse and saw seals and sea lions. On the way back we also spotted a couple of Bald Eagles.
What an amazing trip and adventure! If you are in the Victoria, BC or Sooke, BC areas, I would HIGHLY suggest taking an whale watching/eco-tour with Sooke Coastal Explorations. Captain Russ Nicks is highly insightful and you'll learn a lot about the whales and animals that inhabit this area.

Sooke Coastal Explorations - Encounter with L-Pod near Sooke, BC Vancouver Island
We went out for a 3 hour whale watching trip that we arranged with Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina.
Sooke Coastal Explorations has their office and boat located at this beautiful, new resort in Sooke, BC.
Russ Nicks, our whale watching guide and owner of Sooke Coastal Explorations found L-Pod near the Sooke Harbour Entrance. It was only about a 15 minute Zodiac boat ride to the location where they were moving west.
We got to spend some considerable amount of time watching these amazing mammals in their environment. We witnessed a few spyhops, a few breaches and many whales swimming past our boat.
We also encountered whales trying to take a large 30 pound Chinook, or King Salmon from people fishing from their boat. We drove over to them and got the story as well as a great shot of this large keeper.
There is so much to do in the Sooke Region. What a way to spend an afternoon.

Things to do in Sooke, BC
I was fortunate to have two members of my family come out to visit us from Ontario this past month, my dad and my uncle. My father has been out here before, but my uncle had not, so I wanted to pull out all the stops and make sure he had the time of his life.
We ended up doing more than what you see on this video, but I think these clips top the highlights for them both.
I'd like to thank the following companies for giving us a fantastic time.

Sooke BC Whale Watching
August 12th proved to be another successful whale watching trip with Sooke Coastal Explorations.
Today L-Pod was spotted near San Juan Island, so we left Sooke with poor visibility because of the fog and made out way, 35 miles to where the whales were last seen.
When we arrived and with the help of the other local companies, we soon had our very own encounter with these majestic creatures. Everyone on-board an an amazing time and this was one of my favourite trips as a whale watching guide.
Due to the conditions, we ended up having to shut down our engines as the whales turned direction and headed right for our stern. We had an amazing encounter with L-Pod, one our guests, nor I will forget.

Sooke Rotary Pier / Marine Boardwalk - Sooke, British Columbia
A long boardwalk that juts out into Sooke Harbour. A great place for an evening stroll. Wheelchair acess down Macgregor Park.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of Bald Eagles, Harbour Seals and fishing boats driving by. Take a deep breath of fresh salt air. Be sure to stop every now and then, look over the railing to see if you can spot any starfish.
Watch people drop their crab traps at the end of the pier.

Kayaking the Sooke Harbour - West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals
Mrs. Discover Sooke and I went out on two Hobie Inflatable Kayaks rented from West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals located at the Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina off West Coast Rd, in Sooke, BC located on Vancouver Island.
We took the kayaks around the harbour and viewed seals, an old tug wrecked and the shoreline around the town of Sooke, including the Rotary Pier.
We had a blast renting these and will be doing so again. What a great way to view the harbour, west coast and Sooke.

Royal Canadian Marine Search And Rescue - Unit #37 Sooke, British Columbia
Our vessel, the Spirit of Sooke, was in for repair work and we needed a vessel to cover our area in case of a SAR call-out. Two of us travelled into Victoria to borrow a Mark VII RHIB and bring back to our home dock in Sooke.
The trip normally takes about 45 minutes to complete, from harbour to harbour. The wind was about 15 knots and the seas, in certain areas, were about 3-4 feet. The currents, tides and wind greatly affect certain areas, such as Race Passage and the Becher Bay area and this is were you generally get some heavier seas.
It was a good trip back but we both got quite soaked, as you will see.

Humpback Whale and Killer Whale Breaches - Sooke Coastal Explorations
Sept 2, 2010 I took a group of whale watchers out from Sooke, BC.
We stopped at Race Rocks lighthouse and got some really nice looks at the sunning Sea Lions and Seals grunting and groaning everywhere, some where even growling and ready to put on a show.
From there, we headed East to Constance bank, actually 5 miles south of Constance bank and watching a mother and young Humpback Whale for 30 minutes or so. The mother came out of the water twice, giving us some really nice breaches. The onlookers loved it, so did I.
From there we continued east until we reached the southern tip of San Juan Island, where we witnessed a resident pod of Orca, which also gave us a breaching Bull, twice to be honest. He also did some cartwheels and a tail slap.
It was a great trip and our guests from New Zealand, honeymooners from Saskatchewan and some local Victoria people had a blast!
Dall's Porpoise Bow Riding off East Sooke, BC
Took my dad and uncle out for a personal whale watching tour with Sooke Coastal Explorations to see the Humpback Whales off Race Rocks and on our way we found these Dall's Porpoises who wanted to play off our bow.
I think I got too excited and at one point even sounded like Krusty the Clown. I need to take a chill acting like a little kid, but I love seeing all sea mammals.
