Fishing BC Presents: Exploring Sooke with Vancouver Island Lodge
Ryan Chamberland fishes the oceans and tidal pools near Sooke nearly 160 days a year, both for himself and with clients who come to the small community near Victoria, B.C. in search of wild experiences.
In Sooke, located on the west side of Vancouver Island just above Victoria, it’s possible to catch chinook salmon within 10 minutes of leaving the dock. As well, there are whales to watch and halibut to pursue, all in a quiet ocean cove that feels like you are “away from everything.”
“That’s the experience I like to provide for my guests,” he says.
The quality of the fishing is something that guests will never forget.
“I never get tired of it. When the rod goes off, the heart gets pumping. It’s amazing.”
Sooke, BC Halibut Fishing
We took a day charter trip with Sooke Coastal Fishing Charters to target Halibut and they didn't disappoint.
We were about a 15 minute boat ride from the docks in Sooke to the fishing grounds where we caught the two Halibut. One was about 15 lbs and the other about 25 lbs,
The sun was out full force and so was the wind and waves. but that didn't stop us from having a blast jigging for halibut.
We each walked away with enough Halibut to last us quite some time. Thank you Sooke Coastal Fishing Charters for a great day of Halibut Fishing.

Salmon Run up Charters Creek, Sooke, B.C.
For about eight weeks each fall the magnificent salmon run draws spectators from across Vancouver Island. The Sooke to Port Renfrew region offers outstanding salmon spawning streams and numerous spots that offer great viewpoints for watching the salmon as struggle against impossibly strong currents and shallow, rocky creek beds. Somehow the salmon, of many varieties, know exactly where to go, ultimately sacrificing their life to spawn. Some make it to their final destination, while others perish along the way.
If youre looking for an easily accessible spot to watch the salmon run, we recommend Charters Creek on Sooke River Rd., just south of the Sooke Potholes in Sooke, British Columbia.
Its truly an amazing site; something everyone should experience first-hand at least once in their life. But for those too far to visit the Sooke region, in true Discover Sooke style, weve filmed a video that captures some of the edge-of-your-seat excitement in this majestic salmon run.

Sooke Salmon
Fishing salmon in my Hobie PA-14, Rigged with down-rigger, electric trolling motor, fish finder. The only time I use the trolling motor is for salmon, the tide and plus the down rigger ball seems to really put a drag on the boat or I'm to old ha.
Sooke Coastal Explorations - Encounter with L-Pod near Sooke, BC Vancouver Island
We went out for a 3 hour whale watching trip that we arranged with Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina.
Sooke Coastal Explorations has their office and boat located at this beautiful, new resort in Sooke, BC.
Russ Nicks, our whale watching guide and owner of Sooke Coastal Explorations found L-Pod near the Sooke Harbour Entrance. It was only about a 15 minute Zodiac boat ride to the location where they were moving west.
We got to spend some considerable amount of time watching these amazing mammals in their environment. We witnessed a few spyhops, a few breaches and many whales swimming past our boat.
We also encountered whales trying to take a large 30 pound Chinook, or King Salmon from people fishing from their boat. We drove over to them and got the story as well as a great shot of this large keeper.
There is so much to do in the Sooke Region. What a way to spend an afternoon.

2 Reel Fishing Adventures - Sooke, British Columbia
We went out for a full day of Chinook (King, Spring) Salmon fishing with 2 Reel Fishing Charters.
We can't explain how much fun we had with them and fishing guide Ron Neitsch. Leaving the docks at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina, early in the morning, we arrived at the fishing grounds 10 minutes later. The water was nice and calm, something not unusual in this area. No ground swells and large rollers like the open ocean.
We spent a full day with 4 large Salmon on the gear but only 1 in the boat. I can tell you though that the fun is with the fish on, getting them to the boat is ideal, but it's certainly not disappointing.
The battles lasted anywhere from 3-8 minutes. The fight is intense and physical.
It was a blast. I will do it again with 2 Reel Fishing Adventures in Sooke, BC. Located on Vancouver Island, just a 45 minute drive from downtown Victoria, BC.

Things to do in Sooke, BC
I was fortunate to have two members of my family come out to visit us from Ontario this past month, my dad and my uncle. My father has been out here before, but my uncle had not, so I wanted to pull out all the stops and make sure he had the time of his life.
We ended up doing more than what you see on this video, but I think these clips top the highlights for them both.
I'd like to thank the following companies for giving us a fantastic time.
