World Heritage / Világörökség - Sopianae (Pécs)
(Hungarian description below - magyar leírás lejjebb)
This video displays the reconstructed buildings of the Late Roman / Early Christian cemetery of the Ancient Sopianae (now Pécs, Hungary). Note that this is just a preliminary concept - the buildings are not modelled in all their details and also the environment is only built up to demonstrate the closest proximity of the site. There will be an extremely lot of work to fully finish this project - but at least it's started now. The creation of the project has so far been financed by the Zsolnayi Örökségkezelő Nonprofit Kft (Zsolnay Heritage Management Nonprofit Ltd) and sponsored by the Ázsia Kincse (Treasures of Asia) department store in Pécs. Beside myself, the archaeological details have also been worked out by archaeologist Zsolt Tóth of the Janus Pannonius Museum of Pécs. The model was made in Google SketchUp (Pro) and the video rendered in Lumion Ultimate.
_______

Pecs (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Pecs in West Hungary.
Pécs is the largest city in West Hungary and European Capital Of Culture with more than a thousand years of history. From Illyrian and Celtic settlements grew the Roman city of Sopianae and in 1009 A.D. King Stephan founded the diocese of Pécs. At the same time he laid the foundation stone for the first Saint Peter Cathedral whose structure, over the centuries, has been re-built and transformed several times. The fascinating early Christian cemetery with its subterranean, artistically painted grave chambers, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Indeed, few Roman necropolis’ such as this exist outside Italy. The Pécs of today makes it easy to forget that in 1241 the then unprotected city was destroyed by the Huns, which led to the construction of the City Wall. In 1543 the Turks invaded without a struggle and remained for 143 years during which time they introduced mosques, minarets and baths. German, Croat, Roma and Jewish influences dominated the cityscape, a blend that eventually led to Hungarian Art Nouveau and Moorish-Oriental forms are very apparent on the still magnificent synagogues of the Jewish community. Pécs is a rich multi-cultural legacy of European history, a city without frontiers in which many indelible influences have made their mark.

In the 4th century A.D. a remarkable series of decorated tombs were constructed in the cemetery in the town of Sopianae, in the Roman Province of Pannonia, the ruins of which survived under the ground and are situated in the current city of Pécs, in South Hungary. The burial chambers, chapels and mausoleum excavated on the site of the Sopianae cemetery form a complex that bears witness to an ancient culture and civilization that had a lasting impact. It is the richest collection of structural types of sepulchral monuments in the northern and western Roman provinces reflecting a diversity of cultural sources. These monuments are important both structurally and architecturally as they were built above ground and served as both burial chambers and memorial chapels. They are also significant in artistic terms because of their richly decorated murals of outstanding quality depicting Christian themes. The Roman cemetery was found by archaeological excavations which began two centuries ago. Subsequent excavations revealed that the early Christian complex of monuments provides exceptional evidence of a historical continuity that spanned the turbulent centuries from the decline of the Roman Empire in the 4th century to the conquest of the Frankish Empire in the 8th century. Sixteen structures constitute the World Heritage property, although the cemetery includes over five hundred more modest graves which cluster around the major monuments.
