US President Bill Clinton praised Senegal on Wednesday (1/4) for its role in peacekeeping and said it shows that people here can solve a lot of their own problems.

Kenya court's hijab ban ruling sparks fears over Muslim girls' schooling
A ruling by Kenyan’s top court that schools can ban the hijab could lead to Muslim girls - already at risk from practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage - dropping out of school, campaigners warned on Friday.
The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that every school had the right to determine its own dress code, overturning a 2016 judgment allowing Muslim students to wear the hijab in non-Muslim schools, and directed the government to frame guidelines.
Human rights groups fear some schools will opt to impose the ban, which pertains to both the hijab and the white trousers often worn by Muslim schoolgirls under their skirts.
“I believe there is a large sense of tolerance in most schools, both public and private, in Kenya. But there is a possibility that some schools will enforce a ban,” said Demas Kiprono, campaigns manager at Amnesty International in Kenya.
“If this happens, it may affect schooling for Muslim girls. Religious dress is an important issue for some Muslim communities, so the ban may lead to families taking their daughters out of school, or girls may themselves not feel comfortable.”
Muslims make up about 10 percent of Kenya’s 44 million people, while Christians account for almost 85 percent of the population, according to the latest census data available.
Young senegalese Wrestler at Grand Yoff, Dakar-march 2013
I met some professional Senegalese wrestlers in my second journey to the city of Dakar. One of them was Amadou. He invited me to watch the training where he normally provides every week, to young upcoming wrestlers. Foreigners are not allowed to film, that's why this is a briefly and special moment.

Nigeria's Muslims applaud lifting of hijab ban in Lagos schools
A leading Muslim group in Nigeria has welcomed a court ruling lifting the ban on girls wearing the headscarf in government schools in Lagos state.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MRC) said the Lagos Court of Appeal's ruling was a victory for the rule of law.
The judges said the ban violated the religious rights of Muslim girls, overturning a lower court's ruling.
Girls had been barred from wearing the headscarf, or hijab, because it was not part of school uniforms.
The state government has not yet commented on whether it intends to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.
Nigeria's population is roughly divided between Muslims and Christians, with both groups being staunch believers.
The majority of Muslims live in the north and Christians primarily are in the south - though the southern state of Lagos has a more religious mix.
In June, the High Court in the southern state of Osun also lifted the ban on Muslims girls wearing the headscarf.
It caused religious tension in the state, with some Christian boys insisting on wearing church robes to school.
Two Muslim girls challenged the ban in Lagos state, taking their case to its Court of Appeal after the High Court ruled against them in 2013.
The fact that the judgment was unanimous and only two of the five judges are Muslims leaves a firm stamp of authority on the legality of the use of hijab not only by female Muslim students but also by all Muslim women in the country, the MRC said.

Streets deserted in Banjul as political crisis continues
(19 Jan 2017) Gambia's capital Banjul remained unusually quiet Thursday as the nation's political crisis shows few signs of moving to a resolution.
President-elect Adama Barrow was set to be sworn into office at the Gambian embassy in neighboring Senegal on Thursday, while an official close to longtime leader Yahya Jammeh said loyalists would resist a West African regional force if it tried to arrest him.
The multinational force was poised on Gambia's border as pressure grew on Jammeh to go.
Gambia's army, estimated at well below 5,000 troops, is divided over its loyalties to Jammeh, and those not sympathetic to him will not leave until they are invited by the new government, the official said.
The U.N. Security Council was set to vote Thursday on a draft resolution endorsing the West African regional force's all necessary measures to remove Jammeh.
Barrow won the December election, defeating Jammeh, who came to power in a coup in 1994. Jammeh initially conceded defeat but then changed his mind and said he would not accept the results, saying the election was marred by irregularities.
Jammeh has resisted strong international pressure for him to step down. His mandate expired at midnight.
