Sorakuen Garden, Kobe in 4K - 相楽園 ✿ 神戸 - Japan As It Truly Is
Sorakuen Garden in Kobe is one of Kansai's very best and you can get an amazing beautiful, traditional Japanese experience.
The Sorakuen Garden was originally the garden of a former Kobe mayor, but was then opened to the public in 1941. Nearly all the original buildings were unfortunately destroyed during the War, but Sorakuen Garden survived and is one of the region's best.
Two of the best times of year to visit Sorakuen are in April to see the beautiful azaleas at their peak, as well as from late October to mid November or so to see the gorgeous chrysanthemums. The autumn colors are also very nice.
Sorakuen Garden is open 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM).
Entrance fee is ¥300.
Sorakuen Garden is closed on Thursdays (or the following day if a holiday) as well as Dec 29-Jan 3rd.
The official website is:
Sorakuen Garden is easily accessed by a 10 minute walk northwest of Motomachi Station, or a 5 minute walk north of the Kenchomae subway station.

Sorakuen - Japanese Garden, Kobe ᴴᴰ ● 相楽園 神戸
► Sorakuen is a Japanese landscape garden located in central Kobe. The garden used to be part of the residence of Kodera Kenkichi, a former mayor of Kobe, but was handed over to the City of Kobe and opened to the public in 1941.
It's a bit unusual in the way, the first part of the garden is basically a palmgrove of the King Sago Palm type, commonly found in southern Kyushu and Okinawa where the climate tends to be mild.
- Enjoy!

Sorakuen is a traditional Japanese landscape garden situated in the center of Kobe. The garden used to be part of the residence of Kodera Kenkichi, a former mayor of Kobe. It was opened to the public in 1941.
All the buildings, which had originally stood in the garden, were burnt down in the war, except for a stable. The Hassam House, the former home of a foreign trader, was moved into the Sorakuen Garden from the Kitano district in 1961.

Sorakuen Garden
Of Kobe's many city parks, Sorakuen is the old traditional Japanese style garden. Completed in the early 20th century, it was built by Taijiro Kodera, father of the former Kobe City Mayor Kenkichi Kodera.
Alongside the traditional layout, the wave of Westernisation experienced in the Meiji Period can be detected in the sprawling lawn.
Before coming under the ownership of Kobe City in March 1941, and renamed Sorakuen the following November, it was commonly known as the Kodera Mansion or Sotetsu Garden.
While the main residence and many other buildings burned down from the American fire bombing during World War II, the Western-style Kodera Stable, surrounding walls and the wooden gates survived and are original structures and buildings.
The former Hassam House, also designated an important cultural property in June, 1961, Sorakuen Hall and Kanshintei tea house, completed in October 1963, were subsequently constructed. After the traditional pleasure barge, designated an important cultural property in August 1953, was donated by Mr. Ushio in March 1980, and relocated to the garden, Sorakuen became its most visually stunning to date.
The magnificent camphor trees, cycad wood and large lanterns give the garden a majestic aura. The sprawling grounds measure 19,566 meters.

Kumokawa Explores | Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden, Kobe Japan
On the 2nd last day of our trip to Japan, we visited the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden, on top of a small mountain.
Despite the rain, the weather was cooling and the flowers were beautiful. We tried herb-made lunches and ice creams (e.g. lavender ice cream), which tasted surprisingly good!!
If you head down to Kobe, be sure to visit the Herb Garden, it's a simple train ride and cable car ride (or hike up) away! :)

Sorakuen Garden, Hyogo
Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
“Sorakuen Garden” is a garden located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. There are “Chisen Kaiyushiki Japanese Teien Garden”, mansions used in the Meiji era, “Ijinkan” (former foreign residences), and “Funayakata” (Japanese houseboat) used in the Edo period. The entire site is a gorgeous and beautiful outing spot like a museum of history. Sorakuen is a place full of attractions where you can enjoy the nature of the four seasons and enjoy it no matter how many times you come. An introduction to its history and charm.
