A View Of Pon SorimuthuAyyanar Kovil | Dharma Sastha | Tirunelveli district | Singampatti | In Tamil
Lord Dharma Sastha as Ayyappan in the palace of Pandala king as his adopted Son, came to this place first as a young lad to learn martial arts, hence this is the first temple dedicated to His worship. Based on events in His life subsequently, other Aiyappan temples at Kulathupuzha, Ariangavu and Achankoil came into being according to some facts. Sabarimala temple is the last when the Lord stayed there for His penance. There are shrines for Mahalingam, Sori Muthu Ayyanar, Sangili Bhodathar, Brahmma Rakshasi, Thalavai Madan, Thoosi Madan, Pattavarayar, Sage Agasthya, Sudalai Madan, Irulappan, Irudan, Karadi Madasami the guardian deities. Those on Sabari pilgrimage visit this first temple to wear the mala-chain. On Aadi new moon day, devotees walk through Pookuzhi-fire pit as a prayer commitment.
Of the five famous Lord Aiyappa temples, this is considered the Moodhara.
Lord Dharma Sastha appears with His left leg bent and the right hanging down slightly siding on the left. Saptha Kannikas (seven maidens) are in His shrine. Those who are not aware of their family deity, pray here. There are Nandhi the bull, elephant and horse vahans. Lord Bhairava graces in the front mandap with His dog vahan before Him.
A Brahamin, Muthupattan by name, fell in love with two girls born in a different community. He died in a battle to protect the cows. Later, a shrine was built for him-Pattavarayan- where he appears with his wives Bommakka and Thimmakka. Though a Brahmin, as advised by his father-in-law, he also learnt the cobbler art. Hence, devotees ties chappals in the shrine. When the devotee visits the shrine next year, he will find that the chappals are worn out though not used by any body. This seems to be miracle in the temple. As the temple is in a jungle region, there are no much human movements. Yet the chappals are found used and old.
Villagers in the region come here in large numbers to worship Pattavaraya Sami for the welfare of their cattle. There is an Iluppai tree in the temple complex. The bells tied by devotees get stuck to the tree which is considered as the Lord acknowledging their prayers. There are Sangili Bhoodattar, Mottayar, Padala Kandigai, Kumbamani as guardian deities under the tree. There is also Vinayaka nearby with two elephants on both sides. It is generally believed that Sabari Hill is the first temple for Lord Dharma Sastha. This temple on the Pothigai Hills revered as the Mooladhara is considered first by some. During the divine wedding of Lord Shiva with Mother Parvathi, as the mount went down due to the weight of the heavy crowd gathered there, Lord Shiva sent Sage Agasthya to South to balance the ground level. Sage worshipped Lord Shiva on this hill. The Shivalinga worshipped by the sage got buried under the sand in the days that followed. Cows grazing in this region were found pouring their milk at a particular spot and this was communicated to the king. He found a Linga at the spot and built a temple. Lord Dharma Sastha too came out of this place as Sori Muthu Ayyanar.
A Brahmin, Muthupattar by name lived in North India. His brothers were discussing about Ramayana. During their talks, the brothers asked Muthu Pattar about the re- lationship of Rama with Sita. Pattar said Uncle. Beaten by the brothers for his ignorance about the epic story, he came to Pothigai hills. He lost himself to the two daughters of one Valai Pagadai belonging to the backward community. As community was a hurdle to marry them, he declared himself as a member of the community. Quite unfortunately, on the conjugal night, a cow was stolen and Muthupattar went in search of the cow and was killed in a quarrel there His two wives also embraced death along with him. According to a manual of Tavancore state on Aiyappan, Muthupattar himself came out as Sorimuthu Ayyanar.
The term 'Pon Soriyum Muthian' means the Lord who down pours golden-rain in the plateau. An instance of this rare phenomenon has found a place in Govemment Revenue Records maintained by the British Rulers. The temple is divided into two, with the passage of a branch from the main river. On the oneside, a temple is erected for Pattavarayan and his two wives, belonging to chappal-shoe-making community, whereas Pattavarayan is said to hail from Brahmin society. An inter-caste marriage even at the olden times — like Lord Muruga! Pattavarayan was a warrior who lost his life while fighting a battle with an army of another region, who wanted to take away cattles from the temple-area.With a view to do away with the evils of caste systems, Ayyapan came to this place in the form of a human and married the two daughters of Muthupattan belonging to backward community.

New Water reservoir near Sasta Koil. This place is near Shenbagathope Grizelled Squirrel Sanctuary. Entry is very much restricted to Sasta Koil and one has to obtain permission to perform puja from the forest department.
The forests are found on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. Only 6.3% of the total geographical area is under forests. Many rare and endemic varieties of flora and fauna are found along the mountain slopes. A wildlife sanctuary, spread over 480 sq. kms. was established in 1989 at Shenbagathopu in Srivilliputtur taluk.. This sanctuary is contiguous with the Periyar tiger reserve on the south-western side and the Megamalai reserve forest on the north-western side. The altitude varies from 100m to 2010 m above sea level. The sanctuary is home to the endangered, arboreal grizzled giant squirrel Ratufa macrora. This greyish brown squirrel weighs 1 to 1.8 kg. and is the size of a small cat. It measures about 73.5 cms. from nose to tail with the tail being 36 – 40 cm. long. They construct drays at forked branches where the crowns of neighbouring trees meet. This enables the squirrel to move away from the site by jumping from tree to tree when threatened. The home range of an individual is between 0.197 hectares and 0.611 hectares.
The sanctuary also hosts a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and butterflies. Resident and migratory elephants are common. Other animals sighted are tiger, leopard, Nilgiri thar, spotted deer, barking deer, sambar, wild boar, porcupine, Nilgiri langur, lion-tailed macaque, common langur, slender loris, bonnet macaque, sloth bear and flying squirrel. Over 100 species of birds have been identified. The rare Great Indian horn bill is also found.
Special steps have been taken to conserve the forest areas in the sanctuary. The annual leases given for the collection of fruit and other minor forest produce has been stopped. Fruit bearing trees and other trees have been planted. This will increase the food sources as well as ensure continuity in the canopy. Soil conservation and water harvesting measures have been undertaken to improve the habitat.
The forests of Alagarkoil valley in Srivilliputur taluk and Saduragiri are known for rare medicinal plants. The medicinal value of 275 plants has been recorded and reported. The forests host a rich variety of orchids and ferns.
The sanctuary is located 86 kms. from Maduari. The best time to visit the sanctuary are throughout the year except for the months of March, April and May.
