My Namibia vlog continues on day 14 of my Namibia road trip heading back into the desert and the Naukluft Mountains in the Namib Naukluft National Park, often referred to as the Naukluft Mountain Zebra park. The Naukluft park in Namibia has great hiking, but first I have to change my tire and find my campsite without driving over the edge of a cliff into the river.
Having found my Naukluft campsite I setup camp with the roof tent for the final time on this Namibia trip, it’s a bit sad to think this is the last time.

The arid landscape of the Namib Naukluft Park in the heart of Namibia seems to be endless and it is the fourth largest nature reserve in the world. In the northern region, between the river valleys of the Swakop and Kuiseb, vast fields of scree cover the majority of this fifty thousand square kilometre conservation area. The remote world of stone and rock seems so strange and unreal that one of the valleys in this region is called Moon Valley.Further into the Namib Desert and the colours of the surrounding landscape grow more intense. It is as though both earth and sky are competing against each other to see who shines brightest.The majestic and world famous blazing red dunes of Sossusvlei tower more than three hundred metres over the landscape. In this extremely hot, arid and treacherous ocean of sand even the trees seem to have given up their struggle for survival. Most of the waterholes have dried out and now this region's wildlife must prepare for yet another period of interminable draught.At the end of the day the fiery sky seems to emulate the warm red colours of the mighty sand dunes and amid the beautiful scenery the magnificent world of the Namib Naukluft Park gradually merges with the intense glow of sunset.

Sossusvlei (Namib-Naukluft Park, Namibia)
Sossusvlei (sometimes written Sossus Vlei) is a salt and clay pan[1] surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name Sossusvlei is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Deadvlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia.[2]
The name Sossusvlei is of mixed origin and roughly means dead-end marsh. Vlei is the Afrikaans word for marsh, while sossus is Nama for no return or dead end. Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River Please Subscribe :

Video Details
This adventure takes place in Namibia and starts out from the capital Windhoek. In this episode Ben and I are going to show you how to explore Namibia independently. We start out from the Urban Camp, A campsite within the city limits.
From Windhoek, we head west towards the coast. There are multiple ways to get to the coast. The most obvious is a paved highway with a lane in each direction. But we opted for a dirt road. In fact, most of Namibia's roads are dirt.
Gamsbert Pass
We go down to Naukluft Park. Desert country but it's not all sand dunes as most people think there are vast plains, valleys and mountains and all kinds of landscapes, but all of them have one thing in common, they're dry.
Ben was looking for routes down to a riverbed.
Giant rock formations in the middle of the desert. Home to flies and strange plants. In the distance I spot desert zebra.
Later on we spotted horses in the distance. And finally we spot the red dunes which indicate the river nearby.
Even though the riverbeds are dry, the green areas provide food for the elephants. Where they drink? I don't know.
It's getting late in the day so it's time for us to find a place to camp.
We're air camping. Which means we camp wherever we want.
We're packing up to go. Ben has discovered that we have a diesel leak. He claims it's only a few drops. Time will tell.
Once we start driving, Ben smells diesel fuel. It turns out that the leak is a big issue. We head to town to have the car repaired.
Wildlife!
Ben likes to eat lunch and open spaces near the sand dunes.
He's quite organized when it comes to mealtimes. I like a little calcium shell. I don't have to take vitamins in the morning. That would be a six egg omelette?

He noticed some bird droppings on the car, so he wants to open up a detailing business on this spot it seems.
Time to get back on the main road and head to town. But before we reach Swakopmund, Ben discovers a playground for boys.
The route from here is either along the beach or on a paved road.
Swakopmund is a traditional German town displaced from Germany and located in the deserts of Namibia.
We spent the night in Swakopmund in order to have the fuel leak repaired the next day.

One of Africa's largest and oldest protected areas, the Namib-Naukluft National Park covers an area of almost 50,000 km2 and protects some of the most varied and extraordinary ecosystems in Namibia; the only country in the world named after its desert! On this grand scale, the Namib-Naukluft provides a sanctuary to large mammals including black rhino (re-introduced to their former range in 2007 to mark the park's centenary), Hartmann's mountain zebra, leopard and cheetah. A stunning study in contrast and extremes, the park provides something for every adventurous appetite to explore.
Hike the rugged gorges and paths in the formidable Naukluft mountain massif or test yourself and your vehicle on the two-day, 73 km 4x4 trail. Photograph some of the planet's oldest and most peculiar plants on the Welwitschia Trail. Explore the Sesriem Canyon. Go birding at Sandwich Harbour, home to up to 50,000 wetland birds including spectacular flocks of Greater and Lesser flamingos. Feel transported to another realm by the vast and inimical gravel plains of the aptly named Moonscape. Explore the isolated mountains that are sprinkled liberally throughout the park, search for unexpected botanical treasures, and be rewarded by awe-inspiring views of the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
The park is managed as a wilderness area, and accordingly has no large resorts, only serviced camping sites at Sesriem and Naukluft and a number of rudimentary camping sites in the Namib section. There are, however, a large number of private accommodations just outside the park.

The impressive yet strangely formed Kokerboom, or Quiver Tree, is in reality not a tree at all but a high growing variety of the aloe plant. The name of the plant comes from the bushmen who made quivers for their arrows from its large branches. The Kokerboom, acacias and various low-growing varieties of bush make up the characteristic vegetation of the region. At the end of the day the fiery sky seems to emulate the warm red colours of the mighty sand dunes and amid the beautiful scenery the magnificent world of the Namib Naukluft Park gradually merges with the intense glow of sunset.
