ANCIENT NEO-CONFUSION ACADEMIES / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
Nine ancient neo-Confusion academies of the Joseon Dynasty are well on their way to be inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage, in recognition of their priceless contributions to promoting neo-Confucianism in Korea.
[Pkg]
Sosu Seowon in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. The first-ever Confucian academy in Korea. It was founded during the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon as an academy of Confucian scholar Anhyang. Thirty years later from that point, Dosan Seowon was built by the prominent Korean Confucian scholar Toegye Yi Hwang. Nine ancient neo-Confucian academies in Korea could soon become a part of UNESCO World Heritage. The International Council on Monuments and Sites has recommended the inscription of Korean seowon on the UNESCO list of World Heritage.

Korean Confucian academies have been recognized as excellent proof of widespread neo-Confucianism in Joseon society. The jury recommended all nine of the Confucian academies listed in Korea's application. The recommended items will be inscribed as World Heritage barring any unforeseen circumstances.
[Soundbite] PARK SUNG-JIN(ORGANIZATION FOR PRESERVING KOREAN NEO-CONFUCIAN ACADEMIES) : Joseon society was the only one to operate academies dedicated solely to neo-Confucianism for such a long time.
The final decision will be made next month by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. If the seowon are inscribed, Korea will have 14 items on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Nine traditional Confucian academies in South Korea, called Seowon in Korean, are one step closer to being added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
According to Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration on Tuesday,... UNESCO's evaluation agency, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, recommended that the scholarly sites are added to the list.
'Seowon' are private Confucian academies established during Korea's Joseon Dynasty to honor renowned scholars and educate young people.
Nine sites have been recommended for the list, including Sosu Seowon in Yeongju and Dosan and Byeongsan Seowons in Andong.
The Cultural Heritage Administration had previously applied for the seowons to be added to the World Heritage List back in 2016,... but it withdrew its bid after being deferred by the International Council on Monuments and Sites.
Seeking consultations with the evaluation agency, the Cultural Heritage Administration re-applied in early 2018.
After almost a year and a half of evaluation,... the Seowons have been finally recognized for their 'Outstanding Universal Value'.
The final decision will be made at the World Heritage Committee meeting in Azerbaijan,... which will be held from June 30th through July 10th.
If successful, the Seowons will become South Korea's 14th item on the World Heritage list.

Seowons, Confucian academies added to UNESCO World Heritage list

Following the designation as world heritage sites,...
Our Lee Min-sun tells us about Seowons and their significance in Korean history.
Nine Confucian Academies in Korea have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. These traditional academies, called Seowon in Korean, sprung up in the countryside during the Joseon Dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries.
In the Joseon Dynasty, there were the village schools and Sungkyunkwan in the capital area and local schools called Hyanggyo in the countryside... spreading the political philosophy of the country. But the local schools started to lose their role and that's when Seowons were created.
Out of the 6-hundred and 40 Seowons left in Korea, 9 of them including Sosu Seowon in Yeongju and Dosan and Byeongsan Seowons in Andong have been recognized by UNESCO… for their wealth of intangible cultural heritage that shows history, education, rituals, and documentary culture.
Seowons are the equivalent of today's universities or colleges and show the typical private education system of the Joseon Dynasty.
As a center of local society and education, they produced collections of literary works and were places for intellectuals to gather. Seowons were built in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.
And their unique architectural style was suitable for diffusion of Confucianism in the rural areas of Korea.
After the Cultural Heritage Administration withdrew their bid for Seowons to be World Heritage Sites in 2016, it sought consultations from UNESCO's evaluation agency and applied again in 2018.
After almost two years of supplementary work, Seowons are now recognized for their 'Outstanding Universal Value' and have become Korea's 14th World Heritage Sites.

Seonbi means virtuous scholar in Korean and typically denotes young nobleman who was preparing for the gwageo examination or passed it but did not take on government position during Joseon Dynasty. A government official who had reputation for integrity and incorruptibility was also called seonbi.
Due to history of many purges in which seonbis were killed, seonbis were idealized and romanticized in popular imagination as young men of integrity in contrast to the ruling yangban class even though all seonbis come from yangban class.
The wandering seonbi is a common figure in Korean depictions of the Joseon period. For instance, a seonbi appears as one of the characters in the Hahoe mask dance, where he competes with a yangban character, often depicted as corrupt and greedy.
Seonbis were supposed to possess Confucian virtues of filial piety and loyalty to the king, despise wealth or private interest, and be ready to lay down one's life to remain faithful to one's principle and integrity. They venerated scholars such as Jeong Mong-ju (who died for his fidelity to Goryeo Dynasty), Six martyred ministers (who refused to accept Sejo's usurpation of throne), and Jo Gwang-jo (reformer who died trying to turn Joseon into ideal Confucian society) as the embodiments of seonbi spirit and as examples to follow.
Today, public intellectuals in South Korea sometimes argue for a return to the seonbi spirit.
[TV ZONE] Oksanseowon Confucian Academy, Where Scholars Cleansed Their Minds
The village of Sesim is located in Angang-eup, Gyeongju; the name Sesim literally means 'a village to cleanse the mind.' Near Jaoksan Valley at the entrance to the village, there are several historical sites related to Yi Eon-jeok, a prominent Confucian scholar in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. After retiring to his hometown in Gyeongju, he continued his academic studies while enjoying the beautiful natural environment of the neighborhood. Yi Eon-jeok has long been considered one of the five most eminent Confucian sages in Korean history, and Oksanseowon Confucian Academy was established to commemorate his achievements and virtuous deeds. To prove his illustrious fame, this royally chartered Confucian academy displays several wooden boards bearing calligraphic works by such renowned figures as Han Seok-bong, Kim Jeong-hui, and Yi Hwang.

Spirit Carved by the Edge of a Knife
The world′s oldest woodblock, Mugu Jeonggwang Daedarani Gyeong sutra, and the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa Temple are a record of the scriptures of Buddhism. By the Joseon Dynasty, however, the Confucian printing woodblocks flourished in place of Buddhist scripture woodblocks. These were private compilations of scholars′ accomplishments published after the scholars′ death. Their descendants and disciples went through intense discussions regarding the moral and intellectual value of the works as they edited and organized the publications. More than just private records of scholars, the Confucian printing woodblocks are a collective work verified and acknowledged by the intellectuals over the years.
[Arirang Prime] Andong and Yeongju, Korea's spiritual capitals
Walking on Land of Pride
Dany Arens, who is from the U.S., has been living in Korea for 9 years. He is the lead singer of the rock and roll band Used Cassettes. Although it was his attraction to the country's dynamic changes that made him decide to live in Seoul, he knows that the city isn't Korea's true side. He actually was able to see what kind of a country it really is by traveling across it when he first came here. This time he embarks on a journey with his friend Su-ha, who is a photographer. Just like the peddlers in the past who used to travel across the country to find products that would please their customers with their keen eyes and good senses, the two friends recommend places where one can fully experience Korea's true charms.
Andong and Yeongju, Korea's spiritual capitals
Gyeongsangbuk-do has the highest number of traditional houses and villages in Korea. Having carefully preserved the cultural heritages of the Joseon Dynasty, which existed for 500 years from the 14th century, the province is also the hometown of tradition where several head families have taken root for centuries. The two friends head to Yeongju and Andong, cities that both symbolize the Korean tradition. Look for the traces left behind by Confucianism, the underlying foundation of the mentality of Koreans and the norms they live by, at Sosu Seowon and Seonbichon Village. Meanwhile, Imcheonggak House, the birthplace of Lee Sang-ryong who gave up his family wealth as well as the comfortable life of the succeeding grandson of his family to dedicate himself to the independence movement during the Japanese rule, makes one think about the true meaning of noblesse oblige.

【東アジア】儒教文化(朝鮮)Confucianism(Korea)

Korea’s possible next UNESCO World Heritage sites (Part 1)
유네스코 세계유산 후보로 오른 한국의 문화재 (Part 1)
Now, let's turn to some cultural news… the UNESCO selects cultural and natural heritage sites from around the world and helps protect and preserve those sites.
And it looks like some more Korean sites could be added to that list.
In part two or our part-three series on diversification of Hallyu or Korean wave,... we take a look at the UNESCO world heritage sites in Korea.
For that Arirang's Lee Min-sun now joins us in the studio.
So, Min-sun, let's start with some background… what world heritage sites do we have in Korea? I know some famous ones in Seoul like Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine.
Hi Da-eun, Korea has a total of 13 world heritage sites including the ones you mentioned. World heritage sites can be classified as one of three categories: cultural, natural or mixed heritage. The volcanic island of Jeju was added in 2007 as Korea's
first natural heritage site. Some of the cultural heritage sites in the country include the historic villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong, as well as Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju and Sansa- the Buddhist mountain monasteries of Korea which were added last year.
Sounds like Korea is continuously making efforts to add more heritage sites to the list. What are some new cultural or natural assets that we can expect to see on the UNESCO World Heritage list?
Korea currently has two sites waiting for the final decision from the World Heritage Committee in July. They are Korea’s Seowon, Confucian Academies from the Joseon Dynasty, and Korea's tidal mud flats called Getbol.
Let’s take a look at Sosu Seowon which is one of the 9 Seowons that has been well managed and has important historical value.
Located in the tranquil town of Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, these Hanok buildings show the education system and architecture of the Joseon Dynasty.
Called Seowon in Korean, these Confucian academies, which sprung up in the countryside during the 16th and 17th centuries, are the equivalent of today's universities or colleges.
Recognized for their wealth of intangible cultural heritage that shows history, education, rituals, and documentary culture, Korea's Seowons are being considered for UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list.
Sosu Seowon is the first such academy, and the King bestowed signboards, books, and workers to it. Korea's Seowon stand out from similar education institutes in other countries in that Seowon are surrounded by natural features and have a flexible layout in harmony with nature.

Korea has 13 UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The country is also making efforts to preserve other major cultural and natural assets and register them as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Lee Min-sun sheds light on the potential candidates.
This Sosu Seowon and eight other Seowon properties that are in top condition and have high value as important historical sites have been nominated for the listing.
Sosu Seowon is the first such academy, and the King bestowed signboards, books, and workers to it.
Korea's Seowon stand out from similar education institutes in other countries in that Seowon are surrounded by natural features and have a flexible layout in harmony with nature.
As well as the possible addition of Seowon to the cultural list, Korea's tidal flats, Getbol, could become Korea's second site on the World Natural Heritage list when the World Heritage Committee makes its final decision in July.
Tidal flats in four regions are being considered for their high biodiversity, being a habitat for endangered species and having the thickest mud deposits in the world.
Having sites listed as a world heritage site means that Korea's cultural heritage is recognized not only from our own perspective but also from a global perspective. Through this process, we can also improve understanding of our cultural heritage.
Korea currently has 14 sites on the tentative world heritage list including the Gaya Tumuli, tombs from the ancient federation of Gaya, located in the southern part of Korea. These seven ancient tombs of Gaya provide archaeological evidence of the ancient history of Korea and East Asia.
