Soufriere Scott's Head Marine Reserve Documentary
A sunken lava dome plummeting to unknown depths offering exceptional wall dives and unique features such as underwater furmoroles (Champagne Reef) Home to 27 dive sites rated in top 10 dive destinations in the world and the deepest recorded sperm whale dive-9000ft, the SSMR is a haven for divers and snorkelers. Forming the only tied island in the Caribbean, the Scott's Head Peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea.
Within the SSMR there are four zones. Each set aside for its own particular activity.
Fish nursery area: this area at Soufriere was determined to be a valuable spawning ground for many pelagic and reef fish; there is no fishing allowed in this region.
Recreation area: The section located at the beach called Tous sable is set aside as a recreational area for swimming and snorkeling from shore.
Fishing priority area: This part of the SSMR is set aside for the local fishery, there are strict guidelines governing this region.
Scuba Diving: There are several areas set aside for scuba diving activities, these are all demarcated by a buoy placed there for dive boats only.

After a hike up to the crater of Morne Diables, this is what we found - a cold water sulphur spring bubbling away.
soufriere an enchanting village
Beautiful short drive along Soufrière Bay to Scott's Head - Dominica
The village of Soufrière is located in a beautiful place on the shore of Soufrière Bay. It has got its name for the sulphur springs which are plenty in its vicinity.
Volcanic activity continues underwater. A nearby Champagne spring attracts many divers. Soufrière Bay is a marine reserve and a popular diving site.
The island's nickname - the nature island - is inspired by the hundreds of streams and lakes that make Dominica a nature-lover's paradise. Unlike many other Caribbean islands, the steep, mountainous terrain on Dominica prevented much clear-cutting, and the pristine rain forests remain largely untouched. To help maintain this natural resource, the government has set aside almost two-thirds of the island as parks and nature preserves. Hikers can climb the 4,700-foot/1,410-meter Morne Diablotin on the island's north or tackle the Trois Pitons or the Soufrière volcano in the south. Hikers also trek across to the Valley of Desolation and Boiling Lake, a natural hot springs.
Secret Bay, Dominica - June 2017
This is footage from a beautiful afternoon of snorkeling in Secret Bay, near Portsmouth, Dominica. Forgive the segments that are a bit shaky; I'm a novice at underwater videography. Enjoy! :)
Dominica - Soufriere Marine Park - Pinnacles
A hundred yards off the shoreline, tucked right into Soufriere Bay, the Pinnacle rises to within 5 feet of the surface. It has a good cover of soft sponges and black coral offering both a shallow second dive and a deeper first dive. It is a good location when the weather is particularly poor, giving the Scott’s Head area rough seas.
