The Calf Sound Isle of Man 2018

At the bottom end of the Island beyond the village of Cregneash lies the Calf of Man - an Island nature reserve seperated by a small channel known locally as The Sound. A great viewpoint and a place to stop at the visitors centre and cafe.
IOM | There is more to this Island than the Isle of Man TT | Why?
Think of the Isle of Man and you probably think of motorcycles and the IOM TT, but there is so much more to this little island in the Irish sea. Join us as we take a weekend break in the Isle of Man and show you some of our favourite things to do in a weekend!

Peel Castle
A Viking stronghold, Peel Castle stands on St Patrick's Isle, linked to the town of Peel by a causeway. The rugged coastline and the ruins of the castle outer walls make this an interesting stop.
Niarbyl Bay
Down a long winding lane, past the cafe and steep hill, you arrive at Niarbyl Bay.
Secluded and quaint, you suddenly feel like a fisherman from years gone by.
The Calf of Man
Calf of Man is a 2.50-square-kilometre island, off the southwest coast. It is separated from the Isle of Man by a narrow stretch of water called the Calf Sound.
There is a cafe and some rugged walking trails too keep you occupied, and on some days you can see the seals basking on the rocks
Cregneash
A small charming village with a tourist museum, seen on map above.
Home to a flock of the rare four-horned Loaghtan sheep, much of the village is made up of a living museum with the small white cottages forming the exhibits. Inside the victorian farming and fishing equipment is displayed and demonstrated.
Isle of Man Steam Railway
Starting in Douglas and steaming east to Port Erin via Castletown this narrow gauge railway is a must do attraction. The scenery is stunning and is a superb way to spend an hour or so chugging along the countryside.
CastleTown
CastleTown is the former Capital of Manx, and is home to Rushen Castle. The narrow streets and fishing cottages make this a delightful place to walk around.
It also holds the annual world tinbath championships
Ballaglass Glen
lovely glen to walk through, a nice wooded area with the river flowing through the middle of it with some fantastic waterfalls, and there’s a fairy house hidden along the river too. Plenty of quirks for kids too like the wizard statue along one of the paths.
Manx Electric Railway
Running from Douglas to Ramsey via Laxey this has to be the most picturesque heritage railway (tramway) I have ever been on.
Starting in Laxey and part of the Manx Electric Railway, the Snaefell Mountain Railway offers daily services to the summit.
Laxey Wheel and Mine
Built in 1854 to pump water from the attached mine, Lady Isabella as she is known is the largest surviving wheel of its kind in the world.
Ramsey
Harbour town on the MANX Electric railway route.
Port Erin Fish and Chips
With thanks to IOM Railway for use of image for rail route.

Oie'll Vreeshey: A story from Baldwin, Isle of Man
The final evening of January was an important time in the Isle of Man, as it was Oie'll Vreeshey (St. Bridget's Eve).
The Manx believed that Breeshey would be roaming the land that night, looking for a place to stay. So you had to make ready for her, with a spare bed, food and drink. If she came and stayed with you, then good luck would be with you for the year ahead.
A story exists of this night from Ned Beg Hom Ruy (Edward Faragher), the poet of Cregneash. He tells the story of an old woman of Earyween, a farm high up the East Baldwin valley, who carried on this custom when others around her had given it up. This left her open to an abuse of her open-handedness when a wanderer happened across the freely-available food and bed...
The story is told here by Ruth Keggin, at the old farm buildings of Earyween itself, where this story took place.
Special thanks are owed to the landowners for permission to film here.

Day Trip around the Isle of Man
It's a beautiful day and instead of taking you to the garden, I'm going to give you a little tour of the Isle of Man.
Starting in the village of Laxey we'll visit King Orry's Grave, a 5000 year old stone tomb. It has two parts that are separated by a modern road and both sites are plonked down in the middle of a residential area.
From there we head north and visit the beaches of the Point of Ayre and Blue Point. You'll see lighthouses and stretches of beach with barely a soul in sight.
Driving south we wind our way around the Devil's Elbow, where local superstition has it that you can't speak or make noise while you're traveling around it. Above it sits an unexcavated neolithic tomb that I'm sure has something to do with the superstition.
Peel Castle was built by the Vikings and its beautiful ruins stand on Saint Patrick's Isle. I have a little mishap with my keys in the rocks there and afterwards we have a walk around the castle walls. The interior is mainly ruins and the castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of a black dog -- the Moddey Dhoo.
We finish up our drive around the Island with a climb to another ancient burial site -- the Meayll hill circle above Port Erin. It's composed of 12 individual stone tombs that were built in a circle about 5000 years ago.

Niarbyl - Isle of Man by Drone
Please watch: Life on the Isle of Man - Vlogging on my Harley

This video is about Isle of Man by Drone - Niarbyl using my DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and part of my Isle of Man by Drone series.
Niarbyl, which means the tail in Manx for the way it extends into the Irish Sea, is a settlement along the southwest coast of Isle of Man (an island between Ireland and Scotland) between Port Erin and Peel. It borders the Irish Sea and is best known for its spectacular sea views which include Calf of Man and, on clear days, include the mountains of Ireland.
Its access road offshoots from the A27 Road at Dalby.
Niarbyl Bay and its surrounds are considered an asset of the Manx National Heritage which oversees the area's preservation as well as the Niarbyl Cafe & Visitor Centre.
One of the fisherman's cottages in the settlement was used as Ned Divine's cottage in the 1998 film Waking Ned. In 1968, the same cottage had been used in Nigel Kneale's television adaptation of his book, The Year of the Sex Olympics
The Niarbyl Fault, a geologic fault marking what remains of the now-extinct Iapetus Ocean, is located just down the hill from the cafe.
Leaving Liverpool Dock for the Isle of Man
The boat starts to depart after 4 minutes 50 seconds, I would normally trim this section from the start of the video, but, the dock looks so tranquil in the soft light, that I have indulged myself and kept these few precious moments.

A sailing instructor was left lost for words after experiencing a pod of almost 100 dolphins swimming in the waters surrounding the Isle of Man.
Jenni Kneale, a sailing instructor of 12 years, was besides herself when the feeding dolphins surrounded her boat during a daily sailing class on July 16, in Port Erin, Isle of Man.
Dozens of fins cut through the water, providing people watching on with a unique and unexpected experience.
Though common to see dolphins off Port Erin's coast, it has never been known for such a large pod to visit the waters of this area to feed.
