Aleppo Syria, Life Before the War, October 2000 walk through the Souq al-Madina

I visited Syria in October 2000. Aleppo was such a beautiful city to visit. This is a clip I shot walking the Souq al-Madina, the main market in the city center adjacent to the Citadel. I've never posted this footage prior to this. 15 years and a civil war later, this area has I believe seen major change and devastation. These images reflect more peaceful times in the heart of Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC. Post opening of the Suez canal, Aleppo's previous spot on the Silk Road no longer as relevant lead to isolation of Syria in the past few decades further exacerbated the situation, although perhaps it is this very decline that has helped to preserve the old city of Aleppo, its medieval architecture and traditional heritage. It won the title of the Islamic Capital of Culture 2006, and has also witnessed a wave of successful restorations of its historic landmarks, until the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011 and the Battle of Aleppo.
The city's strategic trading position attracted settlers of all races and beliefs who wished to take advantage of the commercial roads that met in Aleppo from as far as China and Mesopotamia to the east, Europe to the west, and the Fertile Crescent and Egypt to the south. The largest covered souq-market in the world is in Aleppo, with an approximate length of 13 kilometres (8.1 miles).

Souq al-Madina, as it is locally known, is an active trade centre for imported luxury goods, such as raw silk from Iran, spices and dyes from India, and coffee from Damascus. Souq al-Madina is also home to local products such as wool, agricultural products and soap. Most of the souqs date back to the 14th century and are named after various professions and crafts, hence the wool souq, the copper souq, and so on. (from Wikipedia)

Aleppo is the largest city in Syria[3] and the capital of Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2,301,570 (2005 official estimate), expanding to over 2.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant.[4][5] For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo.[6][7][8] Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppo is distinct in identity, architecture and culture, all shaped by a markedly different history and geography.
Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC.[9] Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC;[10] and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency.[11] Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia.
The city's significance in history has been its location at the end of the Silk Road, which passed through central Asia and Mesopotamia

As we walked through the Souq in Aleppo, Syria, I observed this vendor making pancakes. Looks like he might have had a bit of practice!

Unfortunately, many sections of the souq were destroyed during fighting in 2012.

The centuries-old al-Saqatiyah Market has reopened in Aleppo on Thursday after it was restored to its former glory.

Aleppo locals and representatives of the Aga Khan foundation who partially funded the venture attended the official opening of the market.

The market or Souq, is part of the ancient Bazaar in the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO world heritage site which was damaged during the eight-year Syrian conflict. Many of the old markets are still in ruins.

The venture was partially funded by the Aga Khan foundation at a cost of $400,000 (€357,168) and took eight months.

Aleppo Al Madina Souq, Syria - #CultureUnderThreat Before and After

The Al Madina Souq in the city center of Aleppo is a 14th century CE market and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ancient City of Aleppo. It is the largest covered market in the world. The size and prominence of the souq signifies the site’s strategic trading location as a post for goods from places as far away as India.

The souq itself has suffered irreparable damage as a result of the ongoing conflict in Syria. Barrel bombs, shelling, and other means of weaponry have devastated the more than 700-year-old site as the Syrian regime and opposition groups have grappled for control of Aleppo.

Today we are visiting Aleppo, Syria. This is an amazing ancient city, that has endured one of the most brutal civil wars of the 21st century. The destruction in large parts of the city, most clearly in the old part of town, is just horrific. I was pretty shocked at the views we could find in Google Maps. I am glad to see that in at least many parts of town life has returned to a new normal. There are new developments going up all around, and I read that reconstruction is taking place in parts of the damaged city.

Syria's old Aleppo markets revived after devastation

Life is emerging again in Aleppo as Syrians decided to rebuild the city's old markets.
Destruction and Western sanctions didn't discourage the people from rebuilding with a strong will.
One of the rebuilt markets is al-Saqatiyah souk, a part of an area listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
Re-opened in October this year, Shop owners can continue their businesses after years of closing.

A tamarind seller who travelled the world promoting the traditional Syrian drink is still working in the souks of Damascus.
Abu Mohammad once visited more than thirty countries in a bid to boost tourism.

STORY-LINE
The sweet juicy tamarind has for centuries been sold in its fruit juice form by the juice vendors of Damascus.
In the heat of this ancient Damascus market, Abu Mohammed, carrying his huge pitcher, knows the perfect way to stay refreshed.
He serves tamarind, a traditional Syrian juice made from the sticky brown pulp from the tamarind tree, mixed with sugar and rose water.
Not only does Abu Mohammed sell the cold drink, he accompanies his product with songs from Damascus folklore.
So routed in Syrian history is the ancient tamarind drink that Abu Mohammed once took it around the world to promote Syrian tourism.
I visited thirty three Arab and foreign countries with the Ministry of Tourism to promote for Syria and for tourism in Syria. This is an ancient profession of Damascus, it is about eight or nine hundred years old. We used to have al Sakka in Damascus (a man who sells water in the old city) and that profession gradually evolved and takes this shape nowadays, he says.
Dressed in folkloric costume, Abu Mohammed walks from his house in Al-Shaghour to stand in the middle of the crowd and sell his Tamarind.
He washes his cups and pours juice for people before hiding the money inside his red fez. This is now his daily routine but he says his travelling days are now long behind him.
I come to the Al-Hamidiyah souk everyday. I used to travel when I was young, you can see I am old now, he smiles.
Despite events elsewhere in Syria, for some people it is business as usual.
