Souq al-Hamidiyyeh in Damascus, Syria
Al-Hamidiyah Souq is the largest and the central souk in Syria, located inside the old walled city of Damascus next to the Citadel. The souq is about 600 metres long and 15 metres wide, and is covered by a 10-metre tall metal arch. The souq starts at Al-Thawra street and ends at the Umayyad Mosque plaza, and the ancient Roman Temple of Jupiter stands 40 feet tall in its entrance.
The souq dates back to the Ottoman era, being built along the axis of the Roman route to the Temple of Jupiter around 1780 during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid I, and later extended during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Nowadays it is one of the most popular shopping districts in Syria, being lined with hundreds of clothes emporiums, handicraft shops selling traditional crafts and jewelry, cafés, grocery stores, food stalls and ice cream parlors. Before the ongoing Syrian Civil War, it was one of Damascus's main attractions and was visited by many foreigners including Europeans and Gulf Arabs, but it still remains a popular attraction between locals and Syrians.
Although there have been many violent clashes around Damascus and in some of its neighborhoods, the souq has not been affected in any way by the ongoing war, although peaceful protests and demonstrations have taken place in the nearby Medhat Pasha Souq which extends from the Al Hamidiyah Souq.
It was one of the treasures featured in the 2005 BBC documentary Around the World in 80 Treasures presented by Dan Cruickshank.

Short summary of a text used in an academic class held at High Point University. It has been uploaded to this page for assignment purposes only and is not an educational video for those looking to know more about Souq al-Hamidiyyeh. This video is entirely in Arabic and there is no provided translation. For those looking to see what Souq al-Hamidieyyeh looks like, I found this website of images to be very interesting:

Syria airstrikes kill 10 in rebel-held area despite truce.
BEIRUT -- Syrian government warplanes struck several rebel-held areas in the country's northwest on Saturday, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens, opposition activist said.
A cease-fire supposedly went into effect Thursday, according to Russia's Defense Ministry. But Turkey's Defense Ministry said the truce will go into effect on Sunday, without giving an explanation for the differing dates.
Russia is a main backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, while Turkey is a strong supporter of some of the insurgents fighting against him. Moscow blamed the insurgents for violating the truce Saturday.
Idlib is dominated by al-Qaida-linked militants, and is also home to 3 million civilians. The United Nations has warned of the growing risk of a humanitarian catastrophe as people flee the fighting toward the Turkish border.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said seven people were killed by Saturday's airstrikes in the province's capital city, which is also named Idlib.
Airstrikes killed seven people in the village of Binnish and another four in the village of Nairab. The Observatory is based in Britain and documents the war in Syria through a network of activists on the ground.
The opposition's Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, said the strike in Idlib city killed six and wounded 30, adding that it hit a busy intersection. It said four people were killed in Binnish.
Different death tolls are common on the immediate aftermaths of airstrikes in Syria.
Government forces have been on the offensive in Idlib for more than three weeks, forcing more than 200,000 people to flee for safer areas further north.
The main aim of the offensive by government forces appears to be reopening the highway linking the capital Damascus with the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest. The highway has been closed in Idlib since 2012 when insurgents captured several towns along the route.

[SYRIA] Homs, the Phoenix is flying over the ruins.
If there is no word to describe the joy of living in a city liberated from the Islamic yoke, there is no others to describe the sadness of those who lost everything in the neighborhood of Al Hamidieh.
In Most of Homs, life has resumed very quickly. Tea Sellers call passers-by and some rare tourists as children run to their parents. No more bomb rains! Disappeared the anxiety of being a sniper crossing a street to buy bread. Away from the deaf noises of explosion but no more immediate danger.
Yet in the neighborhood of Al Hamidieh, the ghosts of war still live in the ruins. No noise around. The wind whistle like the balls of once. A few brave people came back but many others are still in exile. Due to lack of financial means, they are still forced to live away from home.
Imagine yourself for a moment leaving your house, without anything, living thanks to the generosity of your neighbors in a city you don't know, coming back thinking you will resume your life as if war had been just a dream, and finally realizing from your home there is only one piece of rickety wall and a mountain of debris.
In Homs, they don't have to imagine, they live it! For this winter, we propose you to rebuild the house of Wdad. The total cost of the work is estimated at € 2.500.
It's an already significant amount, but to live again, it's not much. Be part of the process, make a donation :

Task Force GLM - Syrian Rehousing Project 2020
Alhamdulilah! We are feeling extremely humbled to reveal to you the project we have been working on over the past few months behind the scenes.
'The Syrian Refugee Relocation Programme'
As you know, Task Force GLM have been helping those who have been uprooted from their homes in war torn countries for over a decade now but now through your ongoing dedication and commitment, you have enabled us to take it one step further and help a Syrian family settle in the UK.
Subjected to emotional and physical trauma combined with the horrific conditions in the camps they have been living in, this family has been given acceptance to settle here and will be arriving in February in sha Allah.
Let's get together and welcome this family like we would want to be welcomed!
VOLUNTEER your time to help us get their home ready before their arrival.
If you can spare some time to help decorate their house then please text us on 07858150671 letting us know how you can help.
