Club swimming is a great way for kids to stay active, compete in swim meets and make new friends. There are many swimming clubs in Northern Utah for children ages 7 through 18. Some clubs even allow swimmers as young as 5. Swim teams in Box Elder, Weber and Davis Counties include Box Elder Swim Team (BEST), located in Brigham City; Piranha Swimming in Ogden (PS); Clearfield City Aquatic Team (CCAT); Layton Surfers; and South Davis Aquatic Team (SDAT). There are also many other teams located throughout the state. These are all USA swimming sanctioned teams that can compete at any USA sanctioned swim meet anywhere in the nation. Most of the time, they just compete in meets around Utah. Kids on these teams can compete with other kids in their age groups at meets hosted by different aquatic teams throughout the state. If they get state qualifying times, they can compete in a state championship meet and at the regional and national levels. The state championship meets are in February for ages 15 and up, March for ages up to 14 (for short course season) and July or August for long course season. The CCAT located at the Clearfield Municipal Pool began in 2000 with only four kids, said Donna Russell, director of Clearfield City Aquatic Center. Within a few months, the team was registered with USA swimming. “It has been a steady climb of kids joining the team ever since. Every year it gets a little bit bigger,” Russell said. “We are at capacity.” Matt Whitney, head coach of CCAT, said the team has 111 swimmers on the rolls, but only about 74 who are active members. Twenty-six of those swimmers qualified to swim in short course state this year, Whitney said. The swimmers are divided up into three groups. There are 38 in the entry level bronze group, 14 in Silver and 22 in Gold. The team is divided up by speed and ability, so swimmers can swim at a good workout pace for their needs. “Bronze group swims 2,000 yards in an hour, silver and gold swim about 3,000 yards in an hour,” Whitney said. The bronze group swims for one hour two or three times per week and the gold and silver groups swim five days per week two hours per day. During certain times of the year, they also have a morning practice for 60 to 90 minutes in the morning, Whitney said. Demanding schedule Such a rigorous practice schedule can cause swim team members to learn quickly how to prioritize their lives. The coaches realize that the swimmers have to prioritize and decide how dedicated to be when other activities they are involved with conflict with swimming. “It’s important in life to make good choices. When it comes to swimming, they have to prioritize, and then de-conflict their schedules to the greatest extent that they can. When things conflict, they have to make choices, and I respect their choices as long as they are honest with me,” Whitney said. “I have learned how to be dedicated, and work hard. I have learned discipline from coming to morning practice,” said Abby Zlotnick. “I have also learned how to get along with different personalities, and interact with lots of different people.” Benefits of swimming After this much swimming, it isn’t difficult to observe the benefits of club swimming, Whitney said. “Being a strong swimmer is important because it’s something you can do from when you learn it until you die. Only 40 percent of the people in Utah can swim with their face in the water and feel comfortable about it,” Whitney said. “Being on a competitive swim team is the best way to be comfortable and strong in the water. “When these kids get old enough, many of them become lifeguards and swim teachers at local pools, and they save lives,” Whitney said. While swimmers learn how to be excellent swimmers, they also learn many life skills from swimming. “I have learned a lot about respect, that respect is a two way street, and that I need t...

Telling Our Story - UDOT Fire Response
UDOT plays a huge role whenever a fire threatens a state road. We are often the first on scene to help with traffic control. But what many people don't realize is that we are always the last on scene after the fire is gone. UDOT crews are constantly monitoring burn scars for debris slides and are always ready to spring into action. We spoke with UDOT's Region 4 Director Rick Torgerson and UDOT's Parowan Station Supervisor David Burton to understand just how much involvement UDOT has before and after fires to keep Utah moving.
City of Lehi, Utah - High Tech Success Story
The City of Lehi is a dynamic, growing, family-oriented community that is home to dozens of primary businesses involving thousands of employees in high-tech industries. With the dramatic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, Utah’s Governor Gary Herbert refers to our area as Utah’s “Silicon Slopes”. This epicenter of economic activity has evolved because of Lehi’s central location between the state’s public and private universities, a highly-educated workforce, the area’s rugged outdoor recreational offerings, Lehi’s quality of life amenities, the several first-in businesses like Micron, Intel, and Adobe that took a chance on the community, and the City’s commitment to a predictable and pragmatic development process.

=======
Francisco Vázquez de Coronado y Luján (Spanish pronunciation: [fɾanˈθisko ˈβaθkeθ ðe koɾoˈnaðo]; 1510 – 22 September 1554) was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who led a large expedition from Mexico to present-day Kansas through parts of the southwestern United States between 1540 and 1542. Vázquez de Coronado had hoped to reach the Cities of Cíbola, often referred to now as the mythical Seven Cities of Gold, which is a term not invented until American gold-rush days in the 1800s. His expedition marked the first European sightings of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, among other landmarks. His name is often Anglicized as Vasquez de Coronado.
