Instagrammers Are Killing This Field Of Poppies (HBO)
The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve has a few rules: Don’t bring your dog to the park, don’t eat food along the trail, and don’t fly drones overhead. The most important? Stay on the trail. But during this season’s super bloom, a semi-rare outbreak of golden poppies in spring, staff at the reserve have had a difficult time making sure swarms of kids, families, and models posing for Instagram follow along without trampling the delicate wildflowers.
On a typical day, the park sees about 60 visitors. During super bloom season that number skyrockets to around 2,000. Jean Rhyne, who has been an interpreter at the reserve for 13 years, has been vocal about the long-term impact this can have on the park’s natural wildlife.
“This park was created specifically because of the poppies that are here,” Rhyne told Vice News, “And if they get stepped on or sat on to take a picture in [...] it compacts the soil and then the roots from the seeds of the next year can't get in. So we'll have scars in the habitat for many years to come. ”
Super blooms in California tend to occur about once a decade on average, dependent upon heavy rainfall and favorable temperatures, but this season is the second the reserve has seen in three years. In 2017, there was what Rhyne calls the “Apopalypse,” when park staff first saw a significant and unexpected rise in visitorship, most of whom were drawn there for social media.
Since then, the reserve has tried to adapt, hiring staff from other California State Parks, providing numerous trails and walkways, and even using their hashtag #DontDoomTheBloom to inform people about the potential harm before they visit.
But this hasn’t deterred people from getting their perfect shot. Fewer than 300 Instagram posts have the #DontDoomTheBloom tag while more than 147,000 are tagged #superbloom. 45,000 have the hashtag #CaliforniaPoppies.
This year has also brought some unique problems. In March, a pair landed a helicopter in the middle of a field of poppies. When a park ranger approached the couple, they ran back to the helicopter and fled. The reserve responded to the incident in a since-deleted post on Facebook: “We never thought it would be explicitly necessary to state that it is illegal to land a helicopter in the middle of the fields and begin hiking off trail. We were wrong.”
Rhyne, on the other hand, was not surprised. “You just never know what's going to happen out here,” she said. “People do weird things.”

Erica Spencer - Rising Star Award Recipient
Finding Balance is a fundamental lesson of ancient Chinese philosophy……for every yin there is a yang…competing and complimentary forces at work…that combine to form an ever-present dynamic in our daily life.
For Erica Spencer, this dynamic has played an important role in her path to success. As the oldest of eleven siblings, Erica has always been a leader…blessed with a sharp intellect… and a spirit of adventure.
She graduated from Clyde Savannah High School in 2004 and chose to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. She credits the military for providing a solid foundation in her life…instilling core values like discipline, integrity and courage.
Although she completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina…Erica would not get the chance to live out her military career ….due to reoccurring injuries sustained during training. Her body wasn’t able to handle the stresses presented by the extreme conditions.
During rehabilitation, she developed a bond with naval medical staff and was inspired to pursue a nursing degree upon discharge from her service. With the help of the GI Bill, Erica enrolled at Corning Community College and excelled in the program…earning a scholarship to LeMoyne College in Syracuse.
While finishing her degree, Erica also worked a full-time job at the GRACE House for Chemical Dependency in Cayuga County. There …she served as a residency counselor and helped monitor behaviors associated with various medications.
The experience proved to be a turning point for Erica… she watched the transformation in her clients from prescription drugs…depression, weight gain, suicidal behaviors and other organ malfunctions were all common side effects.
It led her to research alternative forms of treatment. She began to notice missing links in traditional medicine and believed that patient care could be greatly enhanced through focusing on the mind-body connection.
After graduation, she decided to continue her education at the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture…part of the New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls. The program was a perfect fit… and Erica knew she had found her calling.
Her first job as an acupuncturist was with Ryan Chiropractic…where she helped establish a successful new program called “Acu-Meditation.” Her expertise and services led to many new clients and she quickly outgrew the space.
She moved on to Austin Physical Therapy but her growing client list would again create logistical issues. While both ventures were short-lived, Erica gained invaluable mentors that helped provide her with the guidance …and assurance that she could open her own office.
With the help of free business counseling through Seneca County, Erica opened Natural Solutions Acupuncture and Botanicals in 2018. The business employs three individuals and offers a variety of health management services including: acupuncture, massage therapy, botanicals and supplements.
It serves as a place of solace...in the heart of downtown Waterloo…for many patients and friends. Its integrative medicine helps return the body to its natural state of balance and harmony.
In a world that is often filled with darkness, Erica Spencer is focused on bringing light to the area. The adversity she has faced in her life has led to some truly extraordinary opportunities …and given our community a bright rising star.
Missing girl: South Carolina teen missing after texting friends 'I'm being followed' -TomoNews
SURFSIDE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA — Marley McKenna Spindler, 16, has been missing since the morning of August 20, 2015, and while the teen may have run away, a text message to friends saying she was being followed is giving her family and authorities cause for alarm.
Spindler was last seen by friends at 7:30 a.m. on August 20 as she drove away from a Chick-fil-A restaurant near her home in Surfside Beach, South Carolina.
Instead of driving directly to school following breakfast, Marley told friends she would first pick up a 22-year-old man she'd met weeks earlier, identified only as Jeremy.
Marley was last heard from at 8:42 a.m. when she sent a group text message in which she reportedly claimed she was being followed. Her friends decided she was joking.
The teenager never arrived for her first day as a junior at Socastee High School, but her friends decided not to contact authorities in case Marley had decided to skip school for some reason.
Police say CCTV footage captured Spindler withdrawing a small amount of money from her bank on the same morning she went missing, but the teen has not been seen since. The man identified as Jeremy has been cleared and there's currently no evidence of foul play.
Spindler's family say all they want is the safe return of their daughter. She's described as 5' 8, 100 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. She was driving a 2002 silver Ford Escape with a South Carolina license plate reading KFI - 776.
Authorities ask anyone with information about her disappearance to call the Horry County South Carolina police department.

A 13-year-old boy opened fire on a would-be burglar after the suspect tried to break into his house in Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday afternoon, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said.
Police on Tuesday night identified the deceased suspect as 31-year-old Lamar Brown from Summerville. Ira Bennett, who was the getaway the driver, has been charged with first degree burglary.
At 1:30 p.m., a 13-year-old Ladson boy was home alone when he heard a commotion at the back of his house. The boy retrieved his mother’s gun and went to investigate. The mother said to the Post and Courier that she bought the gun for protection but never taught her son how to use it.
“I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to,” she said to the Post and Courier. “I never would have dreamed that this would have been a part of our day today.”
The boy saw someone trying to get in through the back door and opened fire through the door. The suspect reportedly fired back.
Neighbor Debbie Griffin witnessed the attempted burglary and reportedly heard around six shots before calling the police. She added that her son was outside at the time as more shots rang out, reported the Post and Courier.
The suspect was seen fleeing in a silver vehicle. He was later taken to Trident Hospital where he died, authorities said.
Neighbors thanked the boy for his quick action, but the family said they no longer felt safe in their home. The family had just moved into the house this past May. The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation and deputies are searching for the driver of the vehicle.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river you need a permit to do that...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie!
This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING!
In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts.
UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college.
Oregon Mining Law:
Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law:
ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, lawful mining operation means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws.
(2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally:
(a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or
(b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation.
(3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]
Here is the GoPro camera I was using:

2008 Solutions for North Carolina - Cooperative Extension, Bertie County
4-H sets foundation for Peace mission
Jacquelyn Jackson WINDSOR — Jacquelyn Jackson wanted to win the District 4-H cookoff, and she wanted to win badly. She had trouble getting her fire started for that outdoor cookery competition, though, and the delay cost her. She didn't win, and she didn't take it well that she didn't.
They should have given me a prize just for trying, young Jackie told her mother.
Sophia Jackson explained to her daughter that sometimes the prize you ultimately get is not the one you start out wanting.
Some 13 years later that sage advice has proved more than true for 25-year-old Jacquelyn Jackson, a former resident of public housing, and an alumnus of the Bertie County Cooperative Extension's 4-H program. The lessons that Jackson learned from her mother, and from 4-H, helped her to eventually thrive at and graduate from Peace College in Raleigh.
Jackson moved to Illinois after her 2006 graduation and worked for a year as an administrative assistant for an architectural engineering firm. She recently returned to North Carolina and is planning to go to graduate school to build on the English degree she got from Peace. Her goals and accomplishments are traceable, she says, to her 4-H experiences and the attention of Bettina Odom, 4-H Youth Development agent for Bertie County Cooperative Extension.
She had always planned to pursue higher education but says: 4-H definitely motivated me to go to college. It was the first club that I was ever a part of.
Because I got exposure to different things through 4-H, I was willing to step out there and go to college, and try other things.
New experiences are easier for her now, but it wasn't always that way. Described by her mother as, friendly, but not going out of her way to be friends with someone, Sophia Jackson gently pressured her middle daughter to attend Peace to broaden her horizons — racially, culturally and professionally. Her daughter's reaction when she got to school:
I freaked out, Jackson says.
She closed herself off for her first several months at college. Her roommate was from China and spoke little English, and their Asian and African American experiences seemed worlds apart. Jackson wanted to quit. She called home every day for two months — often crying — pleading to come home, but her mother held firm.
Finally, Jackson says, she got in touch with her 4-H experiences to ratchet up her confidence.
4-H allowed me to communicate and interact with kids from other areas of North Carolina, Jackson says. It helped me adjust to people from different cultural backgrounds.
From that reckoning, she never looked back. Jackson began to socialize. She and the Chinese roommate became friends. She later traveled to Haiti as part of a campus mission trip.
She dined formally at the home of Peace College president, Laura Bingham, and even there Cooperative Extension proved invaluable. Because of her 4-H etiquette lessons, Jackson knew which forks on the dazzling table display to use with which courses. Her mother's words about the ultimate prize — the ability to compete — were proving profoundly true.
Peace became home, Jackson says. I couldn't even see myself outside another school besides that one. I had a close relationship with my professors, with the faculty and staff. I had a whole bunch of friends of all different races and colors.
I was, says a laughing Jackson, a social butterfly.
