South Park Street Cemetery by Tourist Destination
The Park Street Cemetery is an important heritage place of Kolkata. It was established during the colonial rule of the British. Previously known as Burial Ground Road, it is one of the oldest cemeteries of Kolkata.
The Park Street cemetery was ceremonially declared open in 1767. It is one of the first non-church cemeteries in the world. In the 19th century, it was known as the ‘Great Christian Burial ground’ in Asia. The cemetery was named after “Park Street” after the private deer park built by Sir Elijah Impey around Vansittart’s garden house. The cemetery served as a burial ground for the European expatriates who were settled in Calcutta during the colonial period. The cemetery houses the graves of many notable European figures of the regal era. Most distinguished tombs are those of ‘Rose Aymler’, beloved of the poet Walter Savage Langdor, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, the initiator of the Young Bengal Movement who lived an eventful life for a short period of just 22 years; Charles Dickens’ son, Sir William Jones, founder of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta in 1796, David Drummond, C. F. Andrews.
The cemetery was closed in 1840 due to lack of burial space and is now a heritage site, preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). In the year 1785, the burial ground was extended on the northern edge of Park Street and by 1840 an enormous new cemetery was opened in a place called the Lower Circular Road Cemetery located nearby.
The renovations of the tombs began in mid-2000 and are still continuing. The first batch of restoration started with 15 tombs. The surroundings have been maintained in epoch style combined with modern environ-friendly technology such as solar-powered lighting.
The cemetery is spread across eight acres of land. Surrounded by high brick walls, the enclosure has an assortment of 1600 tombs with cenotaphs, tablets and epitaphs. The landscape is quaint and serene with tall shady trees and many beautiful flowers and bushes encircling the tombs. The architecture of the grave stones is a mix of Gothic and Indo-Saracenic style. The tombs are mostly made of sand-stone and are square, rectangular or circular in structure. The architectural designs of the tombs reflect classical European styles ranging from Romanesque cupolas, Grecian urns, pyramids, obelisks, cairns and sarcophagi. The sarcophagi’s are designed in unique Hindu style with black basalt carvings on the frontal fascia that resembles miniature replicas of Orissan ‘rekha deul’. One can feel a subtle character of Hindu philosophy expressed through some of the architectural designs.
The Bengali film: ‘Gorosthaney Sabdhan’ (literal translation: Beware in the cemetery) was shot here. The film was based on the novel of the same name by Satyajit Ray.

The memorials are almost all architecturally imposing and replete with classical details and sculptures. Among the interesting professions mentioned in the epitaphs are: breeder of cattle, jail-keeper, silversmith, schoolteacher, architect, translator, livery, printer, head tide-waiter, park superintendent, cooper, postmaster and surgeon.
Grave 363 and the oldest
This grave contains only the following epitaph, possibly indicating that the person wished to remain anonymous: A virtuous mother (died 1825). The oldest grave in this graveyard is of Mrs.S.Pearson.(1768)
Features
The tombs are a mix of Gothic and the rich flavour of the Indo-Saracenic style. Among the Indo-Saracenic tombs is a unique and composite brick structure built in the ‘panchyatana’ manner, with a central dome flanked by miniature replicas of Orissan ‘rekha deul’ on four sides. Coupled with this peculiarity, the black basalt carvings on the frontal façade indicate a distinct respect for the Hindu faith.
Few notorious people along with some so called modern and educated persons making this place more like a park. They are doing many wrong thing over here. People are trying to steal the historical valuable things from here.
We desperately request to this people place do not abuse this place. Stop stealing. Many European people visit here. They are getting negative messages about us, about our city & about our country.
We all need to come forward and need to take any step to stop this nonsense immediately.

A visit to the Old Park Street Cemetery, Calcutta, in 2001
A visit to the Old Park Street cemetery in 2001, specifically to search for the graves of my Swinhoe ancestors, buried there from the late eighteenth century onwards. Filmed by Alan Macfarlane. Some more detailed information is below.
------
.. our interest in Swinhoes took us to the European graveyard when an enterprising man had xeroxed the mouldering records of burials and was able to find a number of Swinhoes in four separate graves. There was also an earlier cemetery opened about 1770 but closed some twenty years later. The graves there were really opulent indicating people of real wealth. This cemetery has no surviving records of burials, but we did find two stones with more Swinhoe information. The men were all lawyers except for the most recent who was in tea. Indians were allowed to use the graveyard since 1934. The plots are effectively sold to the families so even those that are in ruins can not be dug up without the permission of the family. This is causing problems for the present generation of Christians as there are few spaces left for burial and most of the occupiers left long ago.

Fantastic 250 year old cemetery - Kolkata, India
The South Park Street Cemetery in central Kolkata is one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world. It opened in 1767 and was in use until about 1830, despite the plaque on the entry gate claiming it closed in 1790. Although Europeans started not to use it as much after that time. 1600 grave sites or tombs are located there with a vast array of fascinating architecture. Many of the tombs and monuments are of a size rarely seen in more modern cemeteries. The oldest grave is of Mrs. S. Pearson who died in 1768. Many of the markers are touching, especially of young women and children who most likely followed their husbands and fathers to India and then met with premature death from tropical diseases.
