With the lights enhancing the already beautiful natural features of the gardens, the Southeast Botanical Gardens Illumination offers a different feel from similar events taking place at hotels and shopping malls around the island, making it well worth a visit.

I videotaped the SE Botanical Gardens back in 1987, left Okinawa in 1990 and learned several years later that the Gardens had been closed down. Such a shame. Well, I found out that it opened up again in 2013 and when I went back in 2015 I stopped by to check it out.

국제거리 남쪽으로 한발 들여놓으면 평화거리 상점가가 미로처럼 뻗어있다. 2차 세계 대전 후 암시장에서 발전한 이곳 상점가는 온갖 상품들이 한데 모이는 곳이다. 그 안쪽으로는 ‘오키나와의 식탁’이라 불리는 마키시 공설시장이 있다. 오키나와에서 올라가는 모든 밥상은 이곳 시장을 거친다는 말이 있을 정도로 활기 넘치는 곳이다. 특히 이곳에는 오키나와 푸른 바다에서 건져 올린 싱싱한 생선들이 가득하다. 열대의 바다를 누볐던 녀석들 답게 알록달록. 그 색깔도, 모양도 이국적이다. 장 보러온 주민들과 사람 사는 냄새를 맛보러 온 여행자들이 뒤섞여 하루 종일 분주한 공설시장. 오가는 사람들 틈으로 우스꽝스럽게 생긴 생선 한 마리가 눈에 들어온다. 이건 뭘까? “이 생선은 가시복입니다. 독이 있나요? 독은 없어요. 가시가 많이 있지요.” 그야말로 총천연색으로 단장한 이 녀석. 어항에서 막 튀어나온 듯하다. 과연 먹을 수나 있는 것일까?. “이것은 오키나와에서 이라부치라고 부르는데, 파랑비늘돔이라는 생선이에요. 회로 먹어요. 회가 맛있지요. 구워서 먹기에는 맛이 덜하고, 회로 먹으면 좋아요.” 이곳에선 비릿한 생선냄새마저 열대의 정취로 느껴진다. 오키나와의 식탁에서 빠질 수 없는 것이 돼지고기다. 오키나와에선 예로부터 돼지고기를 이용한 요리가 발달해왔다. 그래서 돼지껍질부터, 돼지 귀, 돼지 족 등 모든 부위가 다양한 식재료로 쓰이고 있다. 그렇다 보니 오키나와 사람들의 돼지 사랑은 좀 유별난 데가 있다. ‘돼지 목에 진주목걸이’라는 얘긴 들어봤지만 선글라스에 꽃 장식이라니. 하지만 익살스러운 모습이 왠지 잘 어울린다. 한 장의 사진으로 기억되는 여행의 추억. 누군가는 이곳에서 삶의 희망을 얻었을 테고, 누군가는 이곳에서 가족의 사랑을 확인했을 터이다. 그렇게 작지만 소중한 추억이 한 장 한 장마다 오롯이 새겨져있다.

Okinawa: Southeast Botanical Gardens
We spent the day at Southeast Botanical Gardens, just down the road from our home. We were able to walk around and view the beautiful landscape and water gardens, interact will all kinds of different animals...and feed monkeys and capybaras! The kids had a blast and we definitely plan on going back before we leave this island.
