Skagway, Alaska
Recorded June 20, 2007.
Skagway is a first-class borough in Alaska, on the Alaska Panhandle. It was formerly a city first incorporated in 1900 that was re-incorporated as a borough on June 25, 2007. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 862. However, the population doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000 visitors. The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. Skagway is also part of the setting for Jack London's book The Call of the Wild.
This video begins in downtown Skagway along Broadway Avenue. Here I take a look at the Golden North Hotel and other historic buildings in town. Also in the video is a glimpse of the White Pass & Yukon Railway. A journey I took back in 1994 on my first trip to Alaska, but not today. The video concludes on the Sapphire Princess as we sail away down the Lynn Canal.

Skagway Alaska Train Excursions Are Great When Skagway Weather Isn't Great On Your Alaskan Vacation
Skagway Alaska is an authentic Gold Rush boomtown frozen in time. Today Skagway Is perhaps best known for the Skagway Train or White Pass & Yukon Route. During the height of the gold rush more than 1,000 people per week poured into Skagway, most of which had no idea the difficulty of getting to the gold fields. When the Skagway train route through the mountains was finished it was considered one of the manmade wonders of the world and made a trip through the mountain pass a breeze.
Skagway was a lawless and wild west town far worse than in any Hollywood movie. Gunfights, robberies, and brawls were commonplace. Brothels sprang up everywhere and while technically prostitution wasn't legal the houses operated pretty much openly. You could recognize an establishment by the red lanterns or flowers in the window and the women who worked there would take a little dog with them on walks to drum up business and to tip off would be clients that they were available.
When planning an Alaskan Cruise you may want to choose one that visits Skagway. Of all the ports in southeast Alaska, Skagway is a true favorite and really should be on your must-see list. The Skagway Train or White Pass And Yukon train is a bit pricy but it is worth the ride.
Skagway weather is very unusual because it is int he rain shadow of the coastal mountains which means Skagway weather is much dryer than Juneau, receiving about half as much rain.

SOUTHEAST ALASKA MAGNIFICENT NORTHLAND 1950s TRAVELOGUE 56804
Produced by Joseph Yolo and narrated by Tom Bostic, Southeast Alaska: Our Magnificent Northland is a short film promoting Southeast Alaska. Despite the end of the gold rush era, Alaska still has a special allure to it. Unlike much of the rest of the state—and countries with a similar latitude—Southeast Alaska has a mild climate, tempered by a warm water current. Covering much of Southeast Alaska is the Tongass National Forest (02:31), home to millions of hemlock and spruce, totem poles, and abundant wildlife. Southeast Alaska’s principle towns are Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, Wrangell, and Ketchikan. Ketchikan (03:45) is the “salmon capital of the world.” Commercial fishing and fishing tourism dominate the region, thanks to large populations of salmon and Alaskan Black Cod (04:20). Pontoon planes (04:33) are a common mode of transportation: Alaska has seventy times the per-capita use of airplanes than the rest of the U.S. Juneau, Alaska’s capital, now has a modern airport to service airline jets (04:55), making travel to Southeast Alaska easier and more affordable. Another major attraction of Southeast Alaska is the totem poles (06:25) that dot the landscape. Residents and tourists alike enjoy all that Southeast Alaska has to offer, including Tongass National Forest (07:48), playing on sandy beaches (08:00), and dog-powered transportation (08:16). Mendenhall Glacier and Mendenhall Lake (08:33; 09:50) are not only major tourist attractions, but they also provide jobs to those willing to harvest the pure ice (08:54). North and South Sawyer Glaciers (09:19) at the end of Tracy Arm, producing tons of icebergs, are another highlight of the region. The glaciers are receding, and the receding Mendenhall glacier left an ancient fertile bed that is now used for agriculture (10:08). The U.S. Forest Service is developing the Tongass National Forest (10:34) so that it can help build and support Alaskan communities. Logging in Tongass National Forest (10:56) is a major industry, and portable mills (11:05) are brought in to saw spruce needed for packing cases, which are used to ship the thousands and thousands of pounds of frozen fish. Wildlife, like bears (12:42), also enjoy the region’s abundance of fish. A popular annual event is the Golden North Salmon Derby (13:10) in Juneau, held in July at Auke Bay and Tee Harbor. Sponsored by the Territorial Sportsmen, fishermen from all over come to the derby to fish the 3-day event. Requirements stipulate that there must be at least two people on each boat, and fishermen must bring salmon to the boat unaided. Participants head to the Tea Harbor weighing station (15:10) to compare catches. All catches become property of the Territorial Sportsmen, and the proceeds go to fund scholarships. Commercial fishing is the biggest industry, and it provides employment for 20,000 people each year (16:05). Traps are used in salmon passage ways to catch fish for canning in an operation called brailing. The protection of Alaskan salmon is critical in order to preserve this natural resource that is the backbone of Southeastern Alaska’s economy: commercial fishermen must release at least as many salmon as they catch.

The Best Town in Alaska for Wildlife Viewing!
Valdez, Alaska in an RV is the best way to experience this small ocean side town. Valdez is nestled among fjords on Prince William Sound. You probably know it as the primary location affected by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill in the 80s.

It was the perfect spot for us to hide out for a week between Tim’s crazy Dalton adventure and the arrival of Tim’s parents the following week in to Anchorage.
It was SO NICE to finally be next to the ocean. After being in an RV for months driving through the center of North America we finally reached the coast. This finally felt like the RV experience we had been looking for. We had all the comforts of “home” as well as adventure and beautiful views right outside our door.
Valdez is a very very small town with only a few restaurants, a Best Western hotel, and LOADS of RV parks.
Somehow we managed to call the same day and get a spot right on the water at the Bear Paw RV Resort.
We had to move spots due to availability after a few days in to town, but there’s not a bad RV spot around. Every where you look you are surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and bald eagles.
It was really nice here catching up on work. The fact that Valdez Alaska is one of the wettest places in north america meant we spent a lot of time inside. We didn’t do much vlogging… hence the abnormal amount of voiceover in this episode, but we want to show what Valdez has to offer as it was one of our favorite places in the state.
It’s popular to take a day cruise out to the near by the Columbia Glacier. We opted out mostly because we were using this week to work and it was a little long to leave Pepper at home. We did love all of the other things to do in town.
Our favorite was the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery.
Every year this hatchery releases approximately 230 million pink salmon and 2 million coho salmon. The fish later return to the hatchery by entering the facility using a fish ladder which carry the fish from Prince William Sound “up stream”. This process is known as ocean ranching and occurs every year!
The amount of fish here was just astounding. This of course made the entire area a popular destination for other wild life.
Just up the road at other river inlets is a popular place to spot our favorite animal right off the side of the road. BEAR
There’s only one road in and out of Valdez so you’ll definitely won’t miss Bridal veil falls and the X glacier on your way in and out, unless of course you’ll be riding the ferry on the Alaska Marine highway which can take you down to south east Alaska or up closer to Anchorage.
It was time to head to Anchorage where we met up with a couple who had found us through our New Zealand videos. Fortunately for us they happen to be the owners of Double Shovel Brewing in Anchorage and were wonderful hosts for the evening.
So at this time, Double Shovel isn’t on Harvest Hosts yet, but there is one harvest host in Anchorage. We would definitely recommend checking them out because, surprisingly enough, downtown Anchorage had THE WORST RV options we’ve seen the entire trip.
Another big thanks to Galen and Morgan who made our visit to Anchorage very memorable, or not… if you know what I mean.
Stay tuned for Sunday where we head to Seward with Tim’s parents and kayak to the Aialik Glacier with one of the funniest people we met on the trip…

Summer in Southeast Alaska
Alaska is a place like no other in the United States. I was lucky enough to live in Auke Bay near Juneau for three months during the summer of 2011. While hiking and traveling, what struck me most was the abundance of untouched, undisturbed land. Some people today argue that there is no such thing as wilderness anymore, that humans have expanded so greatly that no bit of land is unaffected by mankind, and that wilderness is nothing more than a romantic concept. After visiting Southeast Alaska, I no longer put faith in that belief. Wilderness does exist, although in few places, and Alaska is one of them.
Please enjoy this short documentary I filmed of the beautiful and powerful life in Southeast Alaska.

Town of Haines Alaska @ NOAH'S TRAVEL ep#24
Many tourists visit during the annual appearance of bald eagles in the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve between October and February. During this time Haines has the largest concentration of bald eagle in the world. In May, Haines hold the longest running beer festival, with over 1,500 visitors and breweries from Alaska to Yukon. Haines is the host of the Southeast Alaska State fair, with four days of festivities on the last weekend of July. Vendors, games, rides and music festival bring people from all over Alaska for this event.

Glacier Discovery by Helicopter
Recorded June 20, 2007.
This video is of my Glacier Discovery tour by Temsco Helicopters in Skagway, Alaska. We left all traces of civilization behind us and experienced the infinite beauty of Alaskas remote glaciers. We lifted off from the historic Skagway waterfront and headed into a rugged region of sheer mountains, majestic valleys and massive glaciers. Our landing site was the spectacular river of ice known as the Meade Glacier. After stepping off the helicopter onto Meade Glacier we were able walk around and peer into deep crevasses. After 40 minutes on the ice our helicopters returned to take us back to Skagway. Our return journey took us across Meade Glacier and then down the Lynn Canal before landing back at the Skagway waterfront.

White Pass & Yukon Route Railway (Skagway) Adventure
This video brings the experience of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway to your screen. The video captures several key and exciting moments of the journey. Captured and presented in this video are mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, historic buildings, tunnels and even the occasional waterfall.
In May 2018, I went on an Alaska cruise with my sister on the Carnival Legend. The cruise lasted around a week and it took us to several amazing ports in Alaska. One such port was Skagway. Skagway is a small city (population around 1,000) in southeast Alaska.
Skagway is the home of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. If you are going to Skagway, I strongly recommend going on this train journey. The round trip lasts about 2 ½ to 3 hours. The trip begins in downtown Skagway and takes you up into the mountains to Carcross and then back to Skagway. The train station is easy to access and find and is not far from the port if you reached Skagway by cruise ship.
