Chinese in Zambia - Straight through Africa | VPRO Documentary
Forty years ago, the Chinese laid a train track through Zambia. Bram Vermeulen travels through the African country by train to discover how the relationship between these countries is now.
Zambia and China are old friends. When the African country became independent in 1964, the Asians were the first to queue to lend a helping hand. Communist China, itself still poor, took the lead in the construction of a railway that ran through Zambia and neighboring Tanzania to the port city of Dar es Salaam. Of course, that was not only out of kindness; the Chinese saw trade opportunities in the area.
More than forty years later, it turns out that the railroad ran into a grandiose failure that cost China a lot of money - you can read more about this in this story by Sean van der Steen, with beautiful photographs. However, the Chinese presence in Zambia has become indispensable, Bram notes. He comes across them along the train route. For example, Chinese people run a copper mine, breed chickens on a large scale and have large factories.
Zambians work on this economic activity, under Chinese bosses. Not everybody is happy with that. Bram visits a village where an explosives factory has exploded. The Chinese owners had not taken it so closely with the safety regulations. The incident is illustrative of the working methods of Chinese in Africa: care for the employees is subordinate to the profits. Also in a copper mine, it appears that the working conditions are far from ideal, and that employees openly complain about their low salary.

Het zijn trouwens niet alleen Zambianen die met de arbeidsomstandigheden in hun maag zitten. Chinees personeel, dat letterlijk niet mag klagen, doet tegen Bram toch een boekje open. Het leven op een afgesloten compound, ver van familie en vrienden, bestaat bijna geheel uit werk en verplichte culturele activiteiten. Van integratie is geen sprake.
Maar het is niet allemaal kommer en kwel. Ondernemende Zambianen vertrekken naar China en komen soms steenrijk terug. Een man die met een Chinese partner een textielbedrijf begon, leidt Bram rond door zijn grote huis. Zambianen kunnen in eigen land niet op tegen de Chinese concurrentie, zegt hij, en daar zou de overheid iets aan moeten veranderen. Het zou volgens hem veel helpen als buitenlandse ondernemers net als in China verplicht zouden worden een Zambiaanse partner in de arm te nemen.
De vicepresident van het land erkent dat er problemen zijn. Chinese boeren verdringen de Zambianen, er wordt gesjoemeld met werkvergunningen, alle winst verdwijnt naar China. Werken is alles wat de Chinezen doen, zeven dagen per week, en ze eisen hetzelfde van hun Zambiaanse personeel. Millions in Zambia prepare to go the polls on Thursday
It's all systems go in Zambia as the country gears up for presidential elections on Thursday. The build-up to the polls has been marred by unprecedented levels of violence. Incumbent President Edgar Lungu is fighting to stay in power, after narrowly winning a snap election last year. His main rival, Hakainde Hichilema -- who alleges that fraud denied him victory in 2015 -- is determined to win this time round. Supporters of both men have repeatedly clashed, forcing a 10-day suspension of campaigning in the capital, Lusaka, last month. The country's electoral commission has appealed to political leaders to desist from violence.

Africa's Worst Famine in a Century

African is suffering from a large-scale famine
that is spreading at an alarming rate.
However, the hardest hit countries are
Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
Many renowned media and political figures are blaming China,
Africa's biggest trading partner, for the famine.
Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia are suffering from
the worst drought in 60 years and a severe shortage of food.
About 12 million people are in urgent need of food.
On July 29, The U.N. Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs reported,
The famine in southern Somalia will continue until the end
of this year, with all areas in the south slipping into famine.
UNICEP warned, About 1.25 million children
in southern Somalia will require food aid.
Relief organizations said, the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group,
the Islamic Youth Party, is controlling the worst affected areas
in Somalia and preventing rescue workers from
providing help to 2 million refugees in the area.
The Islamic Youth Party claim that there is no famine
and that international aid is causing political interference.
In 2009 and early 2010,
it forced aid agencies out of Somalia.
Headquartered in Taiwan,
Formosa Media published the article,
Chinese Hegemony Attacks Africa,
the Neo-Colonialism.
The article pointed out that there are many conflicts
among some African countries and areas.
However, despite opposition from the international community,
China has persisted in exporting cheap Chinese weapons
into Africa, causing military conflicts in Africa.
Regarding this century's worst famine in Africa, on July 28,
Frankfurter Rundschau and Der Spiegel quoted
German Federal Government Commissioner, Guenter Nooke,
as saying that the famine in Africa is clearly of human origins.
Nooke said that China deprived small famers of their land,
in order to export food to related countries.
This is equivalent to depriving the farmers of survival base,
causing serious social conflicts in Africa.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has invested
hundreds of millions of dollars in Africa, in recent years.
Natural resources such as oil, iron, and copper
are shipped out of Africa by the CCP.
They are exchanged for cars, clothing and shoes.
In 2010, trading between China and Africa reached $120 billion.
China surpassed the United States to become
Africa's largest trading partner.
However, the low-cost consumer goods coming into
the African market has had serious consequences.
Africa's fragile production capacity
and industrial development are badly hit.
To expand its political and economic influence in Africa,
the CCP also provides large loans to African nations.
It encourages them to back China
in different U.N. voting sessions.
Some people speculate that the CCP provided financial support
to President Banda to help him win the election in Zambia.
In addition, the CCP also tightened
ideological infiltration and control in Africa.
For example, it has opened 21 Confucius Institutes in Africa.
In regard to this, Former Canadian intelligence official
Michel Juneau-Katsuya said,
opening Confucius Institute is not due to good will,
rather it is one of the CCP tactics.
Affiliations of the CCP spy agencies provide its funding.
The CCP not only ignores some dictatorships in Africa,
but also takes a not-interfering-with-politics stand point.
It persists in providing weapons to African dictatorships.
Moreover, it provides training to network monitoring personnel,
suppressing the African people's freedom.
For example, dictatorships Zimbabwe and Sudan
are imposed arms embargos by Western countries.
However, both are all customers of Chinese made firearms.
On June 11, on her visit to Lusaka, Zambia,
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized
The CCP for carrying on neo-colonialism in Africa.
She said the CCP extracts Africa's natural resources,
makes deals with ruling powers, without benefitting Africa.
Hilary also warned against the CCP's large-scale investments
in Africa, to prevent the African people from being exploited.
In July 2011, on his visit to Africa, British P.M. Cameron
also criticized the CCP for trying to expand influence globally.
He warned about the CCP's authoritarian capitalism,
calling it unsustainable in the long term.
Cameron also pointed out that the CCP played a major role
in another round of dividing Africa,
and Western countries are taking more caution.

Under Mugabe's authoritarian regime, the state security apparatus dominated the country and was responsible for widespread human rights violations. Mugabe maintained the revolutionary socialist rhetoric of the Cold War era, blaming Zimbabwe's economic woes on conspiring Western capitalist countries. Contemporary African political leaders were reluctant to criticise Mugabe, who was burnished by his anti-imperialist credentials, though Archbishop Desmond Tutu called him a cartoon figure of an archetypal African dictator. The country has been in economic decline since the 1990s, experiencing several crashes and hyperinflation along the way.On 15 November 2017, in the wake of over a year of protests against his government as well as Zimbabwe's rapidly declining economy, Mugabe was placed under house arrest by the country's national army in a coup d'état. On 19 November 2017, ZANU-PF sacked Robert Mugabe as party leader and appointed former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his place. On 21 November 2017, Mugabe tendered his resignation prior to impeachment proceedings being completed.

Our local partner NGO is SAPEP (Simalelo AIDS Peer Education Programme) based in the Mazabuka and Monze districts of the Southern Province of Zambia. We work together and use peer educators to empower the rural youth of Zambia to mobilise their communities to fight HIV/AIDS.
