We stood on the summit before returning to the more spacious second summit 20m away. You can see the unstable rock resulting from the massive rock avalanche that occurred in Jan 2013 between Mt. Mt Cook, New Zealand
Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. Its height since 2014 is listed as 3724m, having earlier been measured at 3754m . It lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island.
Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is home of the highest mountains and the longest glaciers. It is alpine in the purest sense - with skyscraping peaks, glaciers and permanent snow fields, all set under a star-studded sky.
Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand
Home to all but one of New Zealand's 20 highest peaks, including the highest, and eponymous, Aoraki (Mount Cook), this national park is 700 square kilometres of predictably mountainous terrain and glaciers and, together with the neighbouring Westland Tai Poutini National Park, forms the Te Wahipounamu South Westland World Heritage Site.

It was first climbed on Christmas Day in 1894, and scaled by first woman in 1910, on the heels of Sir Edmund Hilary earlier that year. Mt. Cook National Park is located in the central part of the South Island, deep in the heart of the Southern Alps.

-- About this video --
Today is our first day in Aoraki Mt Cook! We head straight to the Mt Cook Airport because our first activity in Mt Cook is heli-hiking on the Tasman Glacier!
We join Mt Cook Glacier Guiding who equip us with all the gear, guide and a helicopter and we enjoy a 12 minute scenic flight to the Tasman Glacier. Heli-hiking in Mt Cook is an awesome option for a glacier heli-hike in New Zealand to explore New Zealand’s longest glacier and visit a less crowded glacier.
This New Zealand glacier heli hike takes us across the unusual and magnificent landscape of the Tasman Glacier along with its ice caves, crevasses and more. We spend about 2 hours on the glacier in this glacier heli hike in New Zealand.
So what do you think about this heli hike on the Tasman Glacier? Would you add it to your Mt Cook travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

The towering Southern Alps - Roadside Stories
As the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates collide, they push up mountains -- including the Southern Alps, one of the world's fastest-growing ranges. These dramatic South Island peaks are home to the cheeky kea parrot and native alpine flowers. They attract sightseers, skiers and climbers -- including Everest conqueror Edmund Hillary, who learnt his mountaineering skills on their slopes.

3-Hour Hike to Mt. Cook, New Zealand
Aoraki/Mount Cook is a famous tourist destination and the highest mountain in New Zealand. You can experience a great 3-hour hike with stunning view of snow mountains around you. See the floating giant icebergs by going through the hooker valley track with the awesome view of Tasman Glacier (Part 2 of my Christchurch trip)
About this video:
I started driving from Christchurch down to Mt. Cook which took 4 hours. We had our stop over at Lake Tekapo to enjoy the magnificent view of the lake and the snow mountains in the background. This is the best part of my short adventure in the south island and I definitely enjoyed the 3-hour hike to Mt.Cook, New Zealand!
***THINGS to know about our Mt. Cook Adventure***
1. We left from Christchurch at 7 a.m. and arrived in Mt. Cook at 11:30 a.m. (our travel took longer because of stop over)
2. We stayed at YHA Aoraki Mt. Cook for a night. You might want to bring some food to cook because there's no grocery store within the area. However; YHA sells some ingredients/food to cook.
3. We started the hike at 3 p.m. and finished it before 6p.m. We've only reached the Hooker Valley where you can see the icebergs. It is advisable to start the hike in the morning so you can really reach the snow part with sunrise.
4. Visit Chillax Café (Filipino-European cuisine) in Christchurch city
