South Australia's Finest in Victor Harbor
19grantley.toop.com.au
Echoes of South Australian history abound in Kalang 19-21 Grantley Ave, Victor Harbor. The property was built in the early 1920's for Mr Simpson Newland, CMG, pastoralist and author of Paving The Way. The design of this impressive Gentleman's Bungalow reflected his strong nautical interests. The distinctive chimneys resemble ship's funnels, and the high quality interior woodwork finish indicate the level of workmanship throughout the home. The massive walls, high ceilings and a dry cellar are further historic reminders.
The current owners of Kalang, John Steinle A.O. former Director-General of South Australian Education and wife Joyce have spent the majority of their retirement enjoying an active life in Victor Harbor with its mild seaside climate.
The property is situated on a double block (approx 1071m2) on the corner of Grantley Ave and Carlyle St. Kalang stands in a commanding position in Central Victor Harbor only a short stroll from the beach and main street shops and services. In recent years the original house has been sympathetically restored and refurbished with modernized bathrooms and kitchen and a light filled family room added.
The house has a large front verandah that welcomes you to the front door. The large formal lounge highlights the timeless elegance with beautiful timber floors, bay windows with window seat, huge fireplace and featured high ceilings. The floor plan has flexibility with regards to bedrooms, with either of the large king size rooms being the master, the largest has a formal dressing room and two way ensuite with spa plus large linen cupboard. Located off the main hallway is another storage room. The third bedroom/study has room for a queen size bed plus a WIR and built in desk. The formal dining has the flexibility of being a fourth bedroom. The open plan living area is large enough for all the family. There is a central combustion heater, informal dining area and a large modern kitchen with island bench, breakfast bar walk in pantry. Located off the kitchen is a large dry cellar (1100 x 2400mm plus stairwell), ideal for wine, preserves etc. A modern granny flat adjoining the property sleeps 4-6 comfortably and is fully self contained with kitchenette and bathroom. making perfect accommodation for visiting family, grandchildren or friends, or a perfect home business hub.
Added features are a split system air conditioner, gas fire in the lounge, solar array on the roof plus separate solar HWS.
Side access is through secure electronic gates to the double garage. The gardens are beautifully presented and are easy care, low maintenance and secure for the family and pets.
A.R.H.S (SA Division) 60th Anniversary special part 8. Shunting at Mount Barker. 16-6-2012.
SteamRanger steam locomotives Rx 207 and 621 are seen arriving back at Mount Barker after double heading the A.R.H.S (SA Division) 60th Anniversary special from Goolwa. We then see some of the shunting that took place at Mount Barker which included 621 being turned ready for the next days Southern Encounter service to Victor Harbor. 16-6-2012.
On Saturday 16th June 2012, SteamRanger Heritage Railway ran two steam hauled trains to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Australian Railway Historical Society (South Australian Division) from Mount Barker to Goolwa and return.
Rx 207 hauled an economy class train comprising of 3 Centenary carriages while 621 hauled a first class, premium economy and economy class train comprising of first class sleeping carriage Finniss (which I was in), Bowmans, first class steel carriage 503 and premium economy steel carriage 710.
Rx207 and her train departed Mount Barker at 10am and headed for Strathalbyn whilst 621 and her train departed Mount Barker for Strathalbyn at 10:30am. At Strathalbyn both trains met (Rx207 and her train in the crossing loop while 621 and her train took the main line) and a photo opportunity was organised with both steam locomotives standing next to each other. 621 and her train then departed Strathalbyn for Goolwa and half an hour later Rx207 and her train departed Strathalbyn for Goolwa.
On arrival at Goolwa the first class passengers spilt into 2 groups, 1 group went for lunch at Café Delish (Signal Point) while the other group took a cruise on the paddle steamer the Oscar W. Both groups then swapped over. Premium economy and Rx207's economy class passenger enjoyed lunch at a local hotel in Goolwa.
At Goolwa 621 and her train shunted into the passing lop to allow for Rx207 and her train to arrive. After the two consists were joined together to form one train, Rx207 and 621 proceeded to Goolwa depot for turning and watering.
Rx 207 and 621 arrived back at Goolwa railway station at around 2:30pm and at 3:15pm the double headed train departed heading back to Mount Barker. The climb from Strathalbyn to Philcox Hill with Rx207 and 621 hauling the 7 carriage train was absolute magic and proved to be the climax of what was a great day of celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Australian Railway Historical Society (South Australian Division).

Victor Harbor Horse Tram 11/5/18
A trip out to Granite Island and back on Victor Harbor Horse Tram No.1, hauled by 'Misty.' Please excuse the poor audio quality in the first part of this video, there was an extremely strong wind blowing (in fact an earlier run had been cancelled due to high winds). The sound improves once the tram is in the lee of the island, so please just dip your speakers for the first bit if it gets annoying. The Victor Harbor Horse Tram is a great heritage experience, and unusual for a tram in being 5'3/1600mm Broad Gauge. You can read all about the history of this operation here:
This video was mostly filmed by my partner Jessie.
