Folk Art Center Reopens
After being closed for the last 9 days, The Folk Art Center in Asheville reopens. The center on the Blue Ridge Parkway was forced to close on October 1st, because of the government shutdown. The Southern Highland Craft Guild operates the center. The Managing Director of the Guild, Tom Bailey, said since they have no federal employees and since The Pisgah Inn reopened yesterday, they decided to open this morning. Bailey says he has been in contact with the National Park Service. He told News 13 that while he did not get official word that he could reopen, the Service said it would not put up any blocks to prevent the center from opening.

Craft Fair Connects Asheville to Heritage
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Artists of the Southern Highland Craft Guild traveled across state lines to put their work on display in Asheville this weekend.
The Craft Fair at the US Cellular Center is coming to a close Sunday.
The semi-annual tradition brought almost 200 craftspeople to show of some impressive work and share the heritage behind it.
The guild is made up of artists from Maryland to Alabama, all who are keeping the artwork of their ancestors alive.
To be able to show the public that process and show them that education, and for the public to able to purchase something that is handmade from a person, as opposed to a machine or a factory, is a very special experience, Hannah Barry, of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, said.
You can learn more about the Craft Guild year-round by visiting the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or the shops on Tunnel Road, in Biltmore Village or Blowing Rock.
You can also go online, click here.

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is as diverse as North Carolina. Along the trail, you may see mountain vistas, rolling Piedmont farms, picture postcard colonial towns, weathered tobacco barns, old textile villages, country churches, rushing mountain streams, coastal swamps, hardwood and pine forests, lighthouses, sand dunes, miles of seashore, and friendly people. 680 miles of the route are on trail, and connecting backroads and an optional paddle route allow hikers to trek across the state.
The lodge was built in 1903 and 1904 to be a summer home for Dr. Chase P. Ambler and his family, and it served as this until it was sold in November of 1920. The children and their mother went to the lodge when school was closed for the summer, and returned to Asheville just before school opened in the fall. Dr. Ambler, who had a medical practice in Asheville, would always come up on the weekends and usually on Wednesdays. He also spent many of his vacations there, and frequented the lodge during winter and spring. He especially spent a lot of time there during the first several years, when the out-buildings and the trails were being built.
The Folk Art Center is home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild. The center showcases the finest in traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. In addition to an Eastern National bookstore and Blue Ridge Parkway information desk, the center houses three galleries, a library and the Guild’s oldest craft shop. Beginning in March each year, visitors can see live craft demonstrations daily in the Folk Art Center lobby. The Folk Art Center is located in east Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a five-minute drive from downtown.
