Exploring Tuatapere (and Meeting New Zealand Locals) – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 153: Today we are exploring the little town of Tuatapere in the region of Southland New Zealand! After failing to do the Humpridge Track, we check out what else this New Zealand town has to offer! It’s a great chance to meet the New Zealand locals and experience that Kiwi hospitality!

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
So not everything goes to plan when we make our way to the beginning of the Humpridge Track only to learn that it’s a steep and narrow gravel road to get there and our campervan is not up for the job. Instead, we decide to explore Tuatapere!
First up, we check out the Blue Cliffs Beach in Te Waewae Bay. This is a rugged part of the South Island coastline at the bottom of the Fiordland National Park. It’s a great place for a walk, to look out for marine life as it’s part of a marine reserve, and look out for greenstone.
Following our walk on the Blue Cliffs Beach, we head back into the town of Tuatapere, drop off the campervan at the Tuatapere Backpackers and take a walk in the Tuatapere Gardens. We come across the quirky Yesteryears Cafe and Museum, so we go in and meet Helen who make amazing Pavlova! Pavlova is a traditional Kiwi desert which has to be tried in New Zealand if you get the chance.
After mingling with Helen in the Yesteryears Cafe, we head back to the Tuatapere Backpackers to feed some animals with the owner, Murray, then go mingle with some more New Zealand locals in the local bar, Highway 99 Bar in Tuatapere. Here, we learn about the famous Southland deer mating call competitions they have as well as more things about Southland New Zealand.
Although today didn’t go to plan it’s been about about meeting locals in New Zealand!

New Zealand -Te Anau / Milford Sound
On the Western Shore of the South Island of New Zealand is a small town, Te Anau, where we stayed a couple of nights so we could visit Milford Sound, one of the most popular locations in Southern New Zealand. Beautiful scenery and a memorable experience!

Wide coastlines, beaches, rich vegetation... that´s how the southern coast of the south island looks like. The vid was recorded somewhere between Te Tua and Taramea Bay.

Driving New Zealand - Kaikoura Coast
The video begins in the North Canterbury district of Haupuka as we approach the Pacific Ocean. Travelling north along State Highway 1, the route shares the coastal fringe with the New Zealand main trunk railway line. The shoreline is home to colonies of fur seals and sea birds. The video ends in Southern Malborough, north of the Waima River and 81 kms south Picton, home of the South Island Interisland Ferry Terminals.

- Whilst in Te Anau I also visited the Glowworm Caves which was fascinating
- Our first trip was to the Te Anau Glowworm caves
- Tomorrow we are hitting up the glowworm caves and the wildlife park
- But after a few minutes another boat pulled up to the platform, and we went into the real glowworm caves, which were really amazing
- Then we went back to Te Anau and went to see the glowworm caves, a trip across Lake Te Anau with more stunning scenery then into the caves on a tiny boat in the dark
- We had 3 whole days here, so we decided to do both Milford and Doubtful Sounds plus a trip to the glowworm caves on the other side of Lake Te Anau

Te Anau - Milford Sound Highway : Road to the Milford Sound New Zealand
I decided to base myself in the little town of Te Anau. The gateway to the Fiordland National Park of South Island New Zealand. Perhaps the highlight of a trip to New Zealand is visiting the Milford Sound. A fiord valley which opens out to the Tasman sea. The road leading to the sound is called the Te Anau-Milford Sound Highway and is perhaps amongst the scenic road I have ever had the chance to be on. It was raining really hard today, and this part of New Zealand gets plenty of rain due to its location. Some people would prefer to visit Milford Sound on a sunny day. But I would rather it rain like it did and see a million waterfalls cascading down the mountain sides. Truly spectacular. I decided to join a day trip tour group with Jucy Cruize, they provided round-trip transportation to Milford Sound from Te Anau, a 1 hour boat cruise, and a small lunch meal. The driver was really informative as he drove the small shuttle bus and gave really great commentaries about the history and the surrounding area. music by Setu-Firestorm
