Surfing Soweto - South Africa
December 2006
'Surfing' on top of speeding trains is the ultimate adrenaline experience for South Africa's disillusioned youth. It's illegal, dangerous and has already killed hundreds.
I always wanted to be a stuntman, explains 'Bitch Nigga'. He doesn't just surf trains. He ducks bridges, does push ups and has come up with his own entertainment routine, performed from the top of a racing train. Most of the surfers come from broken homes. They spend their days drinking, smoking and teaching each other the latest train surfing techniques.

The biggest thing for us is that it's a privilege to be able to finally give you something back. Over the last 4 years you've shown us a huge amount of support, you've come to the games when we've really needed you, you've sent us dvd's before a final, you've sent us messages through Zelda, and we finally get to bring back something for your efforts. And from us as a team thank you for everything you've done for us.

STORYLINE:
South Africa's rugby team met its most famous fan - former President Nelson Mandela - and toured the black township of Soweto on Saturday, demonstrating that a sport once synonymous with apartheid has become a tool for racial harmony.
Soweto residents - clearly proud of their team's achievements - braved rain and the early morning chill to cheer on the team as it passed by in an open-top bus.
The meeting with Mandela, at his foundation in Houghton, came one week after the Springboks defeated England 15-6 in the rugby World Cup final in France, uniting black and white South Africans in a frenzy of celebration.
Thank you very much, you have really put us on the map, said Mandela, sporting a Springbok jersey as he held the trophy aloft with coach Jake White.
John Smit, Springboks captain acknowledged the support his team have received from Mandela saying; The biggest thing for us is that it's a privilege to be able to finally give you something back.
Mandela first wore the green and gold jersey when South Africa won its first rugby World Cup in 1995, a year after the end of apartheid, in a gesture of racial reconciliation.
He sent a recorded message of support to the team in Paris and appeared on the balcony at a fan park during last Saturday's final.
South Africa's apartheid rulers used sport to further racial oppression of the black majority and rugby in particular was seen as a symbol of white physical supremacy.
Even today the sport remains dominated by whites - the starting lineup at last week's final included just two nonwhites.
But there are hopes that this will now finally change as rugby embraces a new generation of black South Africans inspired by the performance of Bryan Habana, the speedy black winger who was named international player of the year.
The team began their nationwide tour on Friday in Pretoria following a meeting with President Thabo Mbeki before heading to Johannesburg.

South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg
December 21, 2012
We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.
If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.
If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.

Our Soweto (short for South Western Township) bicycle tour totally blew our minds. We started at the Orlando Towers and visited one of the many informal settlements in South Africa, where we got an insight into their way of life. The settlement has taken the initiative of starting Nomzamo Kids Centre, where children from the community are supervised, fed and taken care of everyday. We also got to see Vilakazi Street, which is one of the most significant historical places in South Africa and not only holds the Nelson Mandela house in Soweto, but is the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winner once lived, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.
When it comes to exploring Johannesburg, taking a Soweto bike tour is, undoubtedly, one of the best things to do in Johannesburg.

Soweto youth benefit from South Africa pool champion's tutelage
In South Africa, Black Ball pool is becoming a popular sport among the youth of Soweto. All thanks to one man, Wetsi Morake, who's a former World, Africa and current South African champion. He is now taking kids off the streets and teaching them the art of playing Black Ball pool. CGTN's Julie Scheier reports from Johannesburg.
