Woza Albert! at Soweto Theatre Promo
WOZA ALBERT! AT SOWETO THEATRE
Soweto Theatre is proud to present Woza Albert! by Percy Mtwa, Mbongeni Ngema and Barney Simon, at the Red Theatre from February 20th to March 11th 2018.
Woza Albert! remains one of the most vibrant examples of satirical anti-apartheid South African Theatre. It demonstrates innovation and creativity during a seminal period of theatre in this country.
Woza Albert! is still a relevant story today; a school set-work in the South African GDE school curriculum. The theatre piece is a great tool for audience development while assisting schools with their school curriculum.
The play portrays so much truth and clarifies a simple approach to the human condition, therefore makes it relevant to South Africa. The two actors play the roles of various black South Africans – a vendor, barber, domestic worker, manual labourer and soldier – receiving the news that Christ (Morena) has arrived in South Africa, where a Calvinist white elite imposes apartheid.
The play is a political satire that imagines the second coming of Christ in apartheid-era South Africa. It looks at a wide range of characters in South Africa at the beginning of the 1980s and attacks the pass laws that prevented Black people from moving freely at the time. The production uses the metaphor of Morena (Jesus) to show what would happen if he came back to South Africa during apartheid. Would he like what he saw? And if he saw the atrocities of the time, then why would he not do anything about them?

Soweto Theatre and TX Theatre Productions presents We Are Here
Men speak out against Women and Child abuse.
Antonio David Lyons, a prolific actor who appeared in the SABC 1 Soapie Generations, scripted this Social conscious play that seeks to express the diversity of male voices specifically in the context of gender
engagement within the issue of Women and Child Abuse.
The script consists of sixteen sketches with scenes exploring a variety
of issues and themes from a distinctly male perspective such as the
politics of dating in a feminist and post-feminist South Africa for
instance. The script has been re-imagined with real stories and
reflections from this dynamic cast of young men. Each sketch provides a rare peak into the inner workings of young South African men.
We Are Here: A Social Activism Campaign is Soweto Theatre¹s contribution to the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse. Performances will be followed by Q&A sessions, allowing the audience an opportunity to give feedback on what was witnessed on stage.
No woman or child should be sexually harassed, beaten, raped, stabbed, shot, or attacked in any manner, anywhere in our country, Zuma said in a statement to mark the launch of government's campaign: 16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children in 2013.
My dream then and now, is simple. Women ought to take centre stage and be at the driving seat of the continent¹s economic advancement. I see women, not just a few but in mass numbers, confidently occupying their place at the tables where crucial plans and decisions about the present and future of this continent are made. They are not seated there as observers, they are the decision makers. - Graça Machel
If we are going to see real investment in the world then our best
investment is women- Archbishop Desmond TuTu
